Need input on digital camera

I am looking for input. I love the Sony that we have... it was top of the line when we bought it four years ago (5 mega pixel and carl zeiss lens). But, the only thing I did not like was the delay in taking the picture (especially on shots that required flash). Anyways, I dropped it the other day and now I think it is toast.
I'm looking for input on a higher-end consumer camera (easy to use). As mentioned above, I want something that takes pictures quickly. I also want to be able to print 8X10's... so at least a 6 mega pixel. (I know there are 10 mega pixel cameras out there now). I would like one that has a decent zoom as well.
Does anyone have a camera that you like and has these features?

cameragirl21 replied: this is right up my alley, Dee Dee, tell me more about why you require consumer use--just ease of use or do you require it to be small? 5megs is enough to print an 8x10 in principle but it won't look nice on your home printer...it also depends on what file size you choose, assuming the camera allows you to choose, mine allows me to shoot in small, medium, large or raw, or any combination of the above but obviously i require these features, i don't know that you do and therefore i don't know if your camera allows you to choose but if so, you can just set it to large and you'll get 8x10s with 5 megs. i recently helped my parents buy a simple point and shoot for their trip to South America and what i told them was not to go below 6 megs, it's just a general rule for good quality prints. the biggest question is--do you need it to be small, like pocket sized...if you're willing to go larger there are many more options. also, what is your price range?

We have this one. I love it. Haven't had any problems with it and takes pretty great quality too.
mom21kid2dogs replied: Just read an article in Memory Makers magazines on digitals. They compared a Sony, Kodak, Canon and a Fuji. They said the Fuji had the fastest picture taking speed. They also liked the light adjustment setting on it. It was a 7 or 8mp, IIRC. We have an older version Fuji and it has a 10X digital zoom. I think this one had a higher zoom. I just took the mag back to the library, darn it, so I'm not sure of the model #. The cost was $399~darn cheap for a good digital I thought.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I have one that I DON'T like - I have a Nikon Coolpix 5600. I loved it at first, but my subjects always have red eye, and the flash takes so long to recharge between pictures that I'm always missing the cute shots. So don't get that one! Dh knows a lot about digital cameras and wants to get me a Canon Powershot something or other.
MommyToAshley replied: I would prefer small, but it doesn't have to be small. The compact size of my Sony was nice, but the problem I was running into was that most compact sized cameras had the same delay in snapping the picture. I do want at least a 6 mega pixel camera (5 mega pixel was the highest you could get in consumer end cameras at the time).
We haven't really set a price range.. I have been considering a nice SLR. I use a camera often and love to take photos, plus it is the best way to preserve our precious moments together. So, I am willing to invest a little in a nicer camera.
MommyToAshley replied: Thanks I will see if I can find that article.
MommyToAshley replied: Thanks everyone for your input, it does help. DH and I will do some research and read the reviews, try out the cameras ... I just needed a starting place as there are SOOO many models out there now.
Jamison'smama replied: Thanks for posting this...we are also in the market for a new camera. Mine has an error code and as anyone with a sony knows...you have to send it in and pay their flat fee for repair...265.00 or something along those lines.
M2A, please keep us posted on your search and I will do the same.
cameragirl21 replied: this is exactly why i was asking...an SLR is bigger but so much faster because in theory it's designed for pros but if you get the Canon Digital Rebel XT for instance, it's pretty user friendly but very fast, it's just big compared to what you're used to. if i'm not mistaken, it has 10 megs...i know it has at least 8. you can also interchange the lenses with is a huge plus, even if you're not a pro and i've worked with it and while it's slower than my 5D it's still pretty fast. way faster than any point and shoot and it's very user friendly, you can set it to automatic and it will automate everything--your aperture, your shutter and will pop up your flash if necessary and it will know if it's necessary. I always recommend Canon as I'm a diehard fan of Canon and i've used nearly everything else. if you want to stick to the smaller ones, i'd recommend the Canon Powershot f80, it's also about 10 megs, small and Canon quality which can't be beat. i don't know how fast it is, though but it will certainly be faster than any Nikon you get. let me know if you need any more info, ok?

This is the one I got for Christmas two years ago. It still rocks. The only thing I don't love about it, and it's minor IMO, are that it's large so I don't take it everywhere.
Luckily, DH has a pocket sized HP that goes pretty much everywhere with us. It's pictures are nice and the videos it takes are really nice but it has the lag and it sometimes hangs after two pictures so you have to restart it before you can take another.
We are never without a camera and if it's a special occasion, or I think there will be some great photo ops, I bring my Canon, otherwise his works fine for basic snapshots.
Crystalina replied: I have the KodakZ650 BUT it does take a second to open and load AND there is a little delay in between the pictures which I totally hate and I've lost shots because of both the opening and the delay between the pics so....not what you're looking for although it takes excelent pics and is compact enough to not be bulky. Besides the delay it will take awhile to grow out of this camera.
mom2my2cuties replied: As kit_kats_mom said DP REVIEW is a GREAT place to compare photo quality and well as specs on the camera.
If you want a Sony - Seriously, the 10 Megapixel is great. :-) I LOVE the way the pictures look. I currently have the same Camera you do right now - and I need to upgrade it for the same reason. I bought it on clearance and it will cost more to fix it this time than it would to just replace it.
