Need help with a baby shower idea I had...

amynicole21 wrote: My Step-brother and his wife are expecting their first baby in October. They live in CA, and since no one can travel out there to throw a baby shower, we are having a surprise cross-country shower. We're all mailing our gifts to them on the same day so that they can spend the next week being showered with packages.

I though last night that I might put together a basket of products I found essential for Sophia's first 6 months. I seem to remember us having to run to the store constantly for some medicine or other product for her. Here are some things I thought of that worked the best for us:

Aquaphor
Desetin creamy
infant tylenol or motrin
Cotton pads for those first few weeks of changes w/o baby wipes
Aveeno no-rinse cleanser (worked great for infant acne, and when I was afraid to give her a bath!)
activated charcole and syrup of ipacac - just in case
Hylands teething tabs and baby orajel
Lansinoh (in case she breastfeeds)
alcohol swabs for the umbilical
mylicon gas drops

Can you guys think of anything else I should add?

maestra replied: McDonalds gift certificates since they won't have any time to make food? rolling_smile.gif I think that that's all we ate for the first week! rolling_smile.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: dipers are always good! I had sooo many I did not have to buy any for 3-4 months! maybe some baby wash, or wipes for when she can used them. I cant think of anything elce, I had gotten everything I needed so I never had to run out and get anything.

Schnoogly replied: Wow Kaitlin that must have been some shower!! We hardly got anything at ours. I think my friends didn't know what to get.

Anyway, how about little washcloths or a pack of cloth diapers for burp rags?

Saline nose spray (little noses)

And a sleeper in size 6 months. They grow so fast and you always get 0-3 month clothes at showers.

A baby book like Dr. Sears's? Lots of good info in there to refer to esp about newborns.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: blush.gif I haven't even heard of half of those products! Here are a few items I would put in there a can of formula just in case, baby laundry soap, a pacifier, wash clothes, sleepers, recieving blankets, baby shampoo, soap and a bottle of that Johnson and Johnson Vapour bath. thumb.gif

Amy I think that's great that you are doing this for them! Good Luck! biggrin.gif

amynicole21 replied:
I thought about that, too! I love the Dr. Sears book (my fav!), but it definitly is for a certain type of parenting, don't you think? I worried that I might be imposing my ideas about parenting on them... but I still might do it thumb.gif

Schnoogly replied: I'd do it anyway, but I'm all for imposing smile.gif It's a fairly mainstream book--they sell it in borders! It's not far out wacky alterna-parenting. Good advice I think!

It does have good info about newborns, and baby development. And didn't you hear, Dr. Ferber recanted (in an article in some New York magazine he said that CIO isn't for everyone and that co-sleeping is beneficial in some cases! So there!!)

Heck, I'd even go so far as to get her a baby sling, or a fleece pouch, like a kangaroo korner or a maya wrap pouch. They're good baby carriers, and absolutely essential if you have a fussy one!

Another great book for fussy babies--The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Karp.

Kaitlin'smom replied:

yep I had two, one my side one his, and I think almost everyone bought me dipers! It was great! I still have 2 big packs of size 3's Kaitlin is still in 2's so when she grows more I can use thoes.

Mommieto2Girls replied: I think diapers are a great idea!!!! I got only one pack at my baby shower, and everyone got me clothes. I would of loved if someone bought me all the stuff you mentioned above. While your shopping you will see lots of stuff you can include. Nail clippers, thermometer...you know that whole kit with all the stuff in it, picture frames, teething tablets.

paradisemommy replied: someone gave me a bottle of Dreft (the baby laundry soap) that i thought was wonderful...and i second the dr. sears book...i love him!!!! rolling_smile.gif

MomofTay&Sam replied: I did something like this recently. But I packed a big diaper bag with everything triplets would need on a first outting. Maybe put it all in a diaper bag? You can never have too many of them. smile.gif

Jamison'smama replied: Maybe anti-bacterial hand stuff, I second the burp cloths (you can never have enough), lip balm (if she breastfeeds her lips may dry out), a disposable camera or film (if she isn't digital), breastpads and I third the Dr. Sears book --it is a big one to mail order from Amazon and have it shipped to her.

Great shower idea!

ediep replied: Ok, I use aquaphor, desitin, vasleine, gauze pads (especially if she is having a boy and he gets circumcised), nail clippers, tylenol, teething tabs, baby wash, baby shampoo, thermometer, antibacterial hand stuff

......what about bottles, paci, bibs, burp cloths

formula and diapers might cost a ton to ship...maybe gift cert to babies r us

MommyToAshley replied: One of the best gifts I got was all the stuff you mentioned along with the diapers, laundry soap and fabric softner. But, I agree, the laundry soap and diapers might cost a fortune to ship.

I can't really think of much more than what everyone else suggested except maybe some baby mitts. Ashley was always scratching herself so those might come in handy. (no pun intended..hehe)

Sounds like a great gift!

CantWait replied: great idea, I can't think of anything else except to say that the thermometor (sp???)I lost mine and still haven't replaced it and baby nail clippers are a great idea....
