Naming your kids - how did you pick?

cameragirl21 wrote: Who named your child(ren)? You? DH? Someone else?
Was your child named after anyone? Any special reason the name was picked?
For example, I was named Jennifer, which is just my English name after my Grandpa Jacob and my Russian name, Lena and Hebrew name Leah are after my Grandpa Leo.
For me, I am partial to unusual names for girls--I love the names Sydney, Ariella (means lioness in Hebrew), Acacia, and Jordan and after watching a Discovery channel program about the Kalahari Desert, I kind of like the name Kalahari for a girl, especially since she could just go by Kali, which is a real girl's name.
For boys I mostly like biblical names--Joshua, Daniel, Jacob, Eli, and Aaron.
What is the significance of your child(ren)'s name?

mom2my2cuties replied: Holy cow woman!! Are you trying to get enough posts today to get into the P&I Forum smile.gif (J/K)

Anyway, my son's name - Michael Allen - My dad's middle name and his grandpa's Middle name

My daugther - Andrea Michelle - Named after daddy (He is Andrew Michael) We had her name picked out 2 years before we got pregnant with her, before we were even trying and never did pick out a boys name.

cameragirl21 replied: what is the p and i forum? no, lol, i'm just home with strep, have been home all day, am bored and going a little stir crazy. But i've always loved a good topic of conversation and a good exchange of ideas and love names and their significance.
That's cool about your kids--Michael and Andrea, very nice names.
Take care,

1lilpeanut2love replied: Kaylee Brynn

--> We looked through baby name books we found the name Kaylee and we loved it.

Brynn-- again we looked through baby name books and loved it. Also, Bryn was a girl from a season on the show REAL WORLD. I loved her name from the time I heard it.

cameragirl21 replied: I think I remember Brynn, from the Vegas show who threw a fork at the guy and he tried to send her home or something like that?
Can't say I watched too much of the Real World but I remember that eppy where they were all trying to decide if she should stay or go, assuming we're talking about the same Brynn.
I have heard the name Kaylee quite a bit recently, it seems to be quite popular.
Very cute girl you have, btw.

luvmykids replied: Kylie Laine-no real significance other than her middle name is the female spelling of Lane as in Lane Frost, a bull rider who was killed a long time ago but my husband was a bull rider also and has just always loved his story.

Colt Clyde-we are a horse and rodeo family but didn't want any of the "typical" cowboy names so thats where Colt came from and Clyde is DH's dad's middle name. A family name actually, most of the men in the family have it somewhere in their name.

Macie Marie-I don't know where Macie came from LOL but Marie is my middle name.

If I had it to do over, I would have named Kylie Lilly Christine after my grandmothers. Other than that, their names fit them pretty well.

cameragirl21 replied: well, luvmykids, you could always try for number four and home she's a she to call her Lilly Christine.... baby.gif biggrin.gif
I like the story of Laine though, although I'm an animal lover so I don't know what I think of the bull riding...hope it's better than bull fighting which I HATE.
Macie Marie, that's kind of cool, it's like an aliteration. If she becomes an artist or dancer or actress or even a clothing designer, that's an ideal name for something like that, very catchy.
And as for Colt, I kind of figured you must be a horse lover.... thumb.gif

Bee_Kay replied: I actually liked the names Ashley and Tyler, I talked to my DH about the names, he also liked them.

Ashley is~ Ashley Marie (Marie after my sisters middle name)
Tyler is ~ Tyler Allen (Allen after my DHs middle name)

cameragirl21 replied: I always wondered what the significance of the name Ashley was. I wondered if it was a reference to ashes, as in fire and smoke but after some research it turns out it's a reference to the Ash tree. I am a tree hugger so anything that is named after a tree works for me. happy.gif
Tyler is a very nice name too, I hear it for both boys and girls these days. It's always best when you and DH can agree on a name, especially if it's not once but twice! wink.gif
I always say that whoever carries the baby for nine months and then pops it out of her privates gets to name it. As soon as the guy can and will do that, then he can name it.... emlaugh.gif

Bamamom replied: Tripp is actually Charles Gary III - Tripp for 3. But I also have some really close friends who were unable to have children and their last name is Tripp so it kind of for them too.

Actually DH and I picked out our names when we were dating

For a Boy - Charles Gary III - who is here already, then Luke Eli (Luke cause I love it and Eli for my dad), and Caleb James (Caleb cause Gary loves it, James for a favorite uncle)

For a Girl - Katherine Grace, Katie Grace for short (Grace was my grandmothers name), Rachel Nicole (we both love Rachel, Gary's always loves Nicole)

Silly huh???? All our kids already named!!!

Bee_Kay replied:
The funny thing about their names...

We are from a fairly small town... So, when I was pregnant with Ashley, I only knew one other Ashley. I had no idea it would get that popular. Ashley was a tossup between Ashley and Kylie.

Same with Tyler. His name was a tossup between Tyler and Zachary. When we chose Tyler, I didn't know another Tyler. It was only after he started school that I realized that it was also a fairly popular name.

Bee_Kay replied:
I love it !! thumb.gif

cameragirl21 replied: No, Rhonda, it's not silly at all, all your kids' names are already picked out so everything is decided, now all you have to do is have them. emlaugh.gif
I love the story about Tripp, so that is what you will call him all his life? Not Charles or Gary? Very cool story, that is why I like to ask these sorts of questions.
Most people refer to someone who is a second, third, etc as Junior, see, you were creative, good for you! thumb.gif

luvmykids replied:
It's very different and it maybe at the most annoys the bulls but doesn't hurt them. A guy like DH who is 160 pounds soaking wet on top of a 2000 pound animal for 8 seconds can't cause any harm, the only weapon he's got is a pair of spurs which are smaller than the bulls pinky toe rolling_smile.gif If anything, the odds are stacked against the cowboy, I promise it's much more common for him to get hurt than the bull wink.gif In all the history of rodeo I'd be willing to bet the score is Bulls=somewhere in the thousands, Cowboys=zero. Case in point, Lane Frost who was killed when a bull hooked him back before protective vests were required on the guys.

PrairieMom replied: We picked Benjamin just because we liked it. We gave him the middle name Tracy after his grandpa, and we needed a masculine sounding name to go along with it.

We picked the name Alexis off of the show Fear Factor. We were watching it one night and decided we would give our baby the name of the winner. We actually ended up likeing the name Alexis. laugh.gif We gave her the middle name NiKol after my sister.

if she would have been a boy we would have named her Nikolas Justin, after my sister and dh's brother.

Bamamom replied:
Gary's dad is called Charles so Charles and Gary were already taken. We are all kind of vertically challenged and so we didn't want the poor little guy to be called little Charles or little Gary. Trey is so popular and my best friends little boy is also a third and goes by Trace.

Really I had wanted to name my first son Tripp after Mr. and Mrs. Tripp long before I met Gary. I just had to talk him into it.

If he wants to be Charles or Gary when he gets older that'll be fine with us but I kind of doubt he will as Mr. and Mrs. Tripp are like grandparents to him - he'll grow up knowing them and understanding why we call him Tripp.

Cool thread by the way tongue.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Actually my children picked their own names. I know that sounds weird, but that's how it happened.

Jade Rose: The middle name was always going to be Rose, but we really didn't know what her first name was going to be. Then my DH turned to me and was like how about Jade. Well she moved around just after he said that so there you go.

Jordan Elizabeth: I was getting my U/S to find out what she was. Well the tech got a good view of her and we both said at the same time, hey that's a girl. The name Jordan Elizabeth just popped into my head. I had to fight for that name, but I won.

cameragirl21 replied: well, I think it's always best when your kids pick their own names, that way they can't blame you if at some point they decide they don't like their names.
LOVE the name Jordan, btw.
Jennifer

DillsMommy replied: My son is Dylan Thomas. Dylan just because we liked it and Thomas after my husband and his dad. If I ever have a girl she'll be Mckenna Faith, I just love that name.

MoonMama replied: Braebin Evan- Braedin becuase we both just fell in love with it when we herd it and Evan is DH's middle name.

mom21kid2dogs replied: We both agreed on the name. We both liked the names Olivia and Kathryn and my sister was the one who actually put them together. It took us a while to decide which we wanted first but we were happy with the result. Not too orginal, though. Olivia was the 10th most popular name in 2000.

JP&KJMOM replied: JP's real name is Jarrett Payton. My dad's initials are JP and we wanted to call him JP so we just had to find something to go with that and it is what we came up with after my water broke on the way to the hospital. laugh.gif

Karlee Janae was a little more in detail.
Kar for Karen
lee for my brother who's middle name is lee.
Janae is a combination of my mom who's middle name is Jane and my middle name of Ranae.

My brother and I were actually given our middle names from both of our grandfathers so it was also using their names as well. smile.gif

luvbug00 replied: Mya Daniella Marie .....what can i say she was supposed to be a boy, came out a girl and we had what felt like 5 min to find a name. all everyones pick the only nessesity was the 2 middle names which is a tradition in DH family.

skinkybaby replied: When we were looking at baby names we had a few rules
1. She wasn't going to be named after anyone. My husband and I are both named after people- first and middle names- so we wanted her name to be "original"
2. No funky spellings. My name isn't a traditional spelling (Jami) and I HATED it as a kid. Everyone always spelled it wrong and I could never get any of the cute personalized stuff because they never had my spelling
3. Nothing too out there. We wanted a traditional name

So with those "rules" in mind we named her Grace. We both loved the name as soon as we saw it in a baby name book

amymom replied: I had a friend as a teen whose name was William Patrick. I used to tell him I was going to name a son that name, since I liked it so much. Hey what Irishman wouldn't like Patrick!!! So When my DH and I were married for 5 years No Baby, my friend who became terminally ill, told me he would send me a baby when he got to heaven. Well he died May 1st and I found out I was pg on July 1st... What other name could we give our son. But we did consider James Robert, and funny thing is my son's friends call him J-Rob and noone knows why they came up with that nickname two years ago.

My mom passed away in 1995 and DD was born in 1997. Mary was my mother's first name, Elizabeth was her mom's and my sister's name and the two went to getther well. We considered, Mary Patricia, Mary Lynne, Marybeth (one name) but ended up with Mary Elizabeth. We were going to call her ONLY Mary. But my DH and friends kept calling her Mary Beth. So she got two names.

So we ended up with William and Mary ... So one of them should go to college there don't you think??? rolling_smile.gif

cameragirl21 replied: To Olivia's mom--I always liked the name Olivia too, and it is becoming more popular. Reminds me of olives, which I think is the general idea....
To skinkybaby--LOVE the name Grace, very classic, but too dangerous for someone like me as for as any offspring of mine goes because in spite of years of ballet, I am a total klutz.
To Amymom, that's sweet that you named your daughter after your mother, your daughter carries on a powerful legacy, I'm sure. Meant to ask you what your screen name means though, if your name is not Amy and your kids' are not Amy then...?
Take care,
Jennifer

mckayleesmom replied: Well...when I was like 14 I always liked the name McKayla, but I always wondered why nobody had put the E sound at the end yet. I decided that when I had a daughter I would name her McKaylEE. Fast forward many years and when I got pregnant and we found out it was a girl.....I brought up the name Mckaylee and dh dismissed it. We decided to name her Olivia Grace (Olivia because I always loved the little girl on The Cosby Show) . One day I was browsing around the internet and learned that Olivia was becoming very very popular. So I talked to dh and he immediately said.....What about that name you first talked about...Mckaylee......And there you have it......We named her Mckaylee Grace

Russell was a whole other ballgame.

We were not able to find out what we were having with him because he wouldn't spread em. My intuition completely failed me because I was completely confident that I was having a girl. Dh wanted to name him Russell and I despised that name. Russell is dh's grandfather and great grandfathers names. Its not that I hated Russell, I was afraid people would start calling him RUSTY...which I can't stand...No offense to anyone, and it sounded like an Old mans name. Dh made a bet with me...If it was a girl we would name her Scotlynn Rose and if it was a Boy he would get his Russell. I made the bet ONLY because I just knew I was having a girl.........Well...My daughter came out with a penis....and that his how we got Russell.....I remember laying in the recovery room planning my course of action to get Leithan to bargain with me on the name when a nurse came up and said "Baby Russell was doing good in the nursery".....I started Bawling...He had already told the nurses his name...We couldn't go back now. A nurse asked me if I was in pain and I said "no, I just named my baby something I totally hate".... laugh.gif But when they brought the baby to me he indeed looked like a Russell....because he looked like a wrinkled old man.... rolling_smile.gif It fits him now too.

redchief replied: Lisa and I discussed our children's names and came to agreement on all of them. Rick is a Jr. My name is also Richard Edward, and that name harkens back to our English heritage. John Michael was our second gift from God and, per tradition, biblical reference was important in his naming. Erin, our first daughter, by tradition had to have a name that began with an "E." This is a family skipping tradition from my mother's side of the family that goes back to American colonial times. There is a set of heirloom silver involved in this tradition. Erin was chosen to honor our family's Irish heritage. Kaitlin was chosen, once again, to honor our family's Irish heritage.

toady_buckshot_noodle replied: Well...

Victoria Christine (Tori) Victoria- MIL's name, Christine- mom's name and Just loved the name Tori.

Ashton Reece

We picked Ashton because it was one of the only names we agreed on, he would have been either a Cooper (my pick) or Tristan (Ryan's pick). Tristan is kind of cute, but it wouldn't fit Ashton, I think we did alright.

And the Reece is a family name on Ryan's side, so at least there's some significance! With Savannah/Baby Girl, we're being more picky....okay, I'M being more picky. Ryan could care less.
laugh.gif

ashtonsmama replied:
Oh how funny! I just saw this, that one of your kids is named Tristan, which is what my son would have been named.

TheOaf66 replied: Tanner has a story behind his name. My dad and myself have the initials TJU middle name of James. So when we found out it was going to be a boy I wanted to keep the tradition going by having a "T" name with James as the middle name and the U. So we wanted a not so common name so we agreed on Tanner. (She would not cave on Thor) laugh.gif

redchief replied:
And I thought I had the best job in the world. Ahh well. wink.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: We talked about baby names while we were dating. I remember sitting in church and DH asking me what my Nanie's name was (my dad's mom, who is deceased and was my best friend) and I told him Madgelene Estelle. He said "How about Madeleine Estelle when we have a little girl." That was one of the first signs that I knew he wanted to marry me wub.gif It was so out of character for him and in church? Not sure why we were discussing it then. laugh.gif I think I must have been writing names on the paper and we could have been engaged at the time. My memory has decieved me. blush.gif Anyway, we came up with Madeleine and that particular spelling b/c it is French and my name also has the French spelling. At the time, Madeleine wasn't so popular. We always knew we'd call her Maddie. When I was pg with her we decided not to find out the sex...I remember standing at the back window of our first house, looking into the backyard with DH and he said "I can't wait to see Maddie playing out there, climbing trees, playing with Uga (our dog)." I said "What if it's Ethan?" He knew all along we were having a girl. Imagine our surprise when she was born. wub.gif Now that Madeleine is so popular I wish we would have named her Madgelene...long story behind why my Nanie was named that, too. happy.gif

Anyway, with Ethan we were in Dallas (before we lived here) on a little vacation in Sept of '99. We'd been trying to conceive for over a year and didn't know at the time we were pg with Maddie. I found out I was pregnant on Sept 27, 1999. But, babies were on the brain and we came to Dallas to relax and get away. We happened to be sitting in the parking lot of a shopping center where an Ethan Allen was. Again, the name wasn't real common and I said "How about Ethan for a boy." He immediately said "I love it." And Scott is my DH's first name so we gave him that middle name. wink.gif 4 years later when I was pregnant with Ethan I asked Scotty if he still wanted to name him that or if he wanted to consider other names since Ethan was so popular. He said he wanted to keep it b/c he always felt he would have an Ethan and a Maddie. wub.gif

If Ethan would have been a girl, her name would have been Emma Rebekah (after Scotty's dad's mother) Scotty still wants his Emma Rebekah b/c he has her named already. emlaugh.gif We can't afford another, though. Maybe that will be the name of our grandchild. tongue.gif

BAC'sMom replied: Brandeis Caden- Brandeis is “Brandon” in Czech which is what my DH nationality is. Caden after my GGrandfather his last name was Cade.
Brandeis - dweller on a burned clearing

Ansley Faye- We wanted to name her after our Mother’s so we used there middle names Ann and Faye and that is the name we came up with.
Ansley - from the pasture land of the noble

Callum Reily- Callum after the same GGrandfather who’s first name was Cal. Reily we liked the name plus he was born on St. Patrick’s Day.
Callum- dove

Crystalina replied: I did not thumb through baby name books. I fipped channels. rolling_smile.gif There are some really pretty names on shows so I started there.

I named Izabella after a character in the movie Mi Familia. I loved the character. She was so simple and beautiful so that was that. We weren't even looking for names at the time. It was too early. We watched the movie and we both looked at each other when we heard the name and said that's it. We never even looked for a boy name and never heard any we liked.

With Evan...he was named after Evan Marriot (The original Joe Millionaire). biggrin.gif The only reason for that was because Evan M. was so adorable. wub.gif We also named him before we knew he was a "he" (like Bella) and we never even looked for a girls name.

We were either really good or really lucky to have our names match our baby's sex.

C&K*s Mommie replied: wub.gif Who named your child(ren)? You? DH? Someone else?
We agreed upon the names we chose, together. There were only a handful (6 total) of names that we both liked, and these are four of them.

wub.gif Was your child named after anyone? Any special reason the name was picked?
Christian's middle name is Nichole. Named after me, but with a "h" added. The "h" was accidental, when my MIL made her an embroidered (or cross-stitched or something) bib before she was born, and had Christian Nichole. It was then that we kept that spelling of Nichole, because it would be too much work to take the "h" out, and move the letters over.

wub.gif Kellie's middle name is Marlette. She is named after Chris' older sister who died within the 24hours preceding her birth. Her name was Summer Marlette. So we honored her by using Marlette, since Summer was always a name that Chris' brother wanted to use if they ever had girls (they had 2 boys together).

huggybugboy replied: Miles Benjamin.

We always liked the name Miles, after Miles Davis, and it just sounds like a musical name. (we are really into music here. tongue.gif ) But the meaning was what really sold us. It means "merciful" and "soldier." We were always convinced that it would be really difficult for us to conceive (because of personal problems) but God was "merciful" and gave us Miles. Benjamin is dh's first name, grandpa's first name, and great grandpas first name.

His whole name means Merciful Son of my Right Hand. dh has Merciful Son tattooed on his right wrist.
