My nephew is in the hospital - weird infection

Danalana wrote: A little over 2 weeks ago, Keenan (BIL's son) had a bicycle wreck when we went to the river. He tore his knee up bad...a little above and just below his kneecap were really scraped up. The one just below was so bad that they used scissors to cut off the skin that was hanging. Well, he has been continuing life as usual (he's 8)...baseball all-stars, tubing on the river, etc...
Sunday night, he started complaining that his knee was hurting really bad...he was almost in tears and he rarely cries. They got in with his pediatrician yesterday and, at first, he thought his kneecap was broken. Thank God it wasn't! He was really concerned, though. A place has come up between the 2 injuries and it is FULL of black stuff that's oozing out little by little. It's red all around it too. He has had staph a couple of times, I think, but they don't know what it is right now. A VERY TENDER red place came up on his pelvic bone, right above his groin. It's just weird...and a little scary! Man, I should have taken a picture--it's unreal.
I'm waiting to hear news...I texted a little while ago and the doctor was in with them. They did bloodwork and cultured it last night before we got there. I'm praying it's good news...I know he's bummed that baseball is over for the year.
Anyway, I'll update when I hear something...just wanted to share!

stella6979 replied: Wow Dana, I hope he's ok. Jeff scraped up his knee pretty bad a few months ago and ended up with cellulitis. His knee was completely swollen and red so they put him on an IV and gave him some anitbiotics. Maybe that's a possibility?
I sure hope he's feeling better soon and that's it's nothing too serious. hug.gif

Danalana replied: His mother just texted...thay're waiting on the orthepoedic surgeon. The first culture was inconclusive so they are doing another one, but they think it's staph. They also think it can be treated at home, but the surgeon will have to confirm.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Black puss is staph. How scary!!! Poor kid! He will be in my prayers Dana!

Danalana replied: Yeah, he's a tough kid....I'm sure he'll be alright, but it's creepy how it just came up out of nowhere!

A&A'smommy replied: oh goodness bless his heart I hope he heals quickly and that he doesn't have to have surgery!!! hug.gif

holley79 replied: I had a very bad case of MRSA last year and ended up having surgery and a 5 day stay in the hospital. I hope he gets better soon.

DillsMommy replied: Oh no. P&PT for the little guy. Hope he's okay. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif

Danalana replied: Well, I thought they might get to come home and treat him there, but I just got a text saying they are going to be there a few more days. Not sure why, but I hope to hear soon!

PrairieMom replied:
He is probably getting IV antibiotics, and those can't really be done at home, so he would have to stay there until they get them all done.
Poor kid. Hope he feels better soon. sad.gif

Danalana replied: Yeah, he is getting that. Doc said it was too serious to treat at home, so I guess we'll be going back tomorrow!

My2Beauties replied: Oh man poor guy! My P&PT's are with him!
