My family is laughing at me and I'm not there - to defend myself.
kit_kats_mom wrote: This is my first real thanksgiving dinner that I've cooked. In the past, I've made boxed potatoes, boxed stuffing and a frozen turkey breast and such when it was just DH and I or we went to my moms. But this year, I went all out and made everything from scratch. Here's what I did:
Tuesday, I made pie crusts, gingerbread men, roasted chestnuts for stuffing, spritz cookies, cranberry/grape compote (which is AWESOME btw) herbed rolls that I froze to cook today and I peeled the hazelnuts. Wednesday, I baked the pecan and pumpkin pies, peeled and cut the potatoes, dried the bread for the stuffing Today, I cooked the turkey and gravy, made the chestnut and apple stuffing, green beans with hazelnuts, baked the rolls, cooked and mashed the potatoes.
My two favorite things from this dinner that I believe may become family traditions are the cranberry grape compote and the whipped cream that I made for the pumpkin pie. 1C heavy whipping cream, 2T pure maple syrup, 1 t sugar. Whip till peaks form...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Not bad right? Today was pretty easy. So I called my mom yesterday to tell her that she earned 3 mom demerits for not telling me that making pie crusts is a PITA and instilling in me that purchased pie crusts are just as good. I also probably said something like "Martha Stewart is a lying hag!" because her instructions make it sound soooo easy.
Well, we had our thanksgiving lunch and then we all took a nap. When I wake up, DH tells me that my mom called and they are all laughing at me. Then he adds that he thinks she's already had her wine for the day. LOL.I call her and she tells me that my aunt Francoise (chef) and grandma are going to be giving a "pie crust baking class" at christmas. That's just WRONG!!!
My family...sheesh!

jdkjd replied: Sounds wonderful. And pie crusts are a PITA but once you've done it - it s not very hard. You did a great job and I can't imagine why they would be laughing at you in the first place. I wish you were cooking for my Thanksgiving.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Sounds delicious!!! You can mail me any leftovers...
Don't let them get to you....pie crust is NOT easy. As a close family friend told me when she taught me to make pie crust when I was 9 - she's been making pie crusts for 50 years (more like 65 years now - she's almost 80) and hers still fall apart!
