Mushrooms??

A deputy's wife called me. I have never met this woman but she got my cell off her husband's cell phone. (No biggy) She wanted to see if I could help get the guys together for a suprise BDay party for her husband. no problem. She could hear Annika in the background and asked how old she was and was telling me how she was a neonatal(sp?) nurse at the local hospital. I told her 10.5 months old and I was feeding her. She asked me what we were having for dinner. I told her I made one of the Homestyle Bakes, Chicken, gravy, mash potatoes and biscuits. I also told her I doctored it up with extra chicken breast and a can of cream of mushroom soup. She went off. She went on to tell me I was poisoning her becaus she was NOT to have mushrooms this early. Well I kind of freaked because I don't know any different. I didn't see this on the "DO NOT" list. Go I have been googling it and checking baby sites and stuff like this. I use mushrooms in everything and she's still here so it must not be too bad.
Anyone else ever hear of the "No Mushroom" rule?
Insanemomof3 replied: I have NEVER heard of that! I have no idea how to help, but it seems to me that when one baby has an allergic reaction to something people tend to get a little paranoid, maybe that was it?
C&K*s Mommie replied: I have never heard of that either.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Mushrooms are a good source of folate (folic acid) too. Which folic acid is highly recommended for women who are pregnant or are child bearing age. I found this:
You may not be PG, but at the least the folic acid in mushrooms will be beneficial to prevent anemia in Annika.
But I have never heard of not giving a 10.5mos old mushrooms.
amymom replied: Never heard of it!
I know you should stay away from unknown mushrooms for all people but especially young children. Also she may be thinking that some kinds of mushrooms carry spores in them that could be harmful. But you were using a mushroom soup that was pretty much preserved. But I also wouldn't fear mushrooms that are normal run of the mill kind, found in the grocery. Nothing too exotic
On a side note: her being a neonatal nurse doesn't give her somekind of special knowledge. She specializes in the care of sick little babies. Not healthy 10.5 month olds. I know her heart was in the right place but jeez, come on, telling you that you are poisoning your little one ~~~ crazy IMO.
If I still had concerns I would call my peds office and ask them.
ZandersMama replied: Zander has LOVED mushrooms since he was about 8 months old, he actually likes them dipped in french salad dressing.
A&A'smommy replied: umm that sounds weird to me I would never think they would be poisonous I mean besides WILD mushrooms.. I think she is a little bit looney!!
moped replied: That is news to me!
My3LilMonkeys replied: Never heard of it...Madison loves mushrooms and has been eating them since around 10 months with no problems.
holley79 replied: Annika's the same way. She loves fresh mushrooms and like I said I cook with them all the time. I mean I could understand if I was going to a cow pasture and picking them then we would have a problem but NOT STORE mushrooms. Glad I"m not the only one.
Nicole, glad I ate a mess of them while I was pregos.
PrairieMom replied: I would be way more likely to listen to a pediatric nurse about that stuff than a Neonatal nurse. Those babys aren't eating anyway. i have never heard that you need to avoid mushrooms. maybe she was thinking of the illegal ones that make you hallucinate.
gr33n3y3z replied: Never heard of it either Raw or cooked yummmm
redplaydoh replied: I never heard of it either and my kids ate them before they were 1 as well. Lucas still loves them and Bryan won't touch them as well as any other food... I kinda think it's rude that she grilled you like that.
CantWait replied: NEVER
Calimama replied: Never.. weird.
Cece00 replied: Never heard that either, I've had 4 kids, too.
Really, if you are giving her the "normal", run of the mill grocery store mushrooms, I am willing to bet its 100% safe. Its probably the more exotic ones or ones growing outside (some are safe to eat, but you'll never see me giving it a try ) that are dangerous to younger children.
Ask the ped the next time you go in.
