Most of you know.. - that I have a few exotics
MomofTay&Sam wrote: I really dont have the usual pets. I have dogs that live in TX with their daddy which I miss a ton but they are old and the trip wouldnt be handled well. I wanted to let you guys know why I have not been around to much for the last 3 days. On Thursday night my chinchilla "Chili" was out of his cage on his nightly playtime. We were dogsitting for my BIL who is also our exotic vet. He was in Grenada. The dogs were crated but the rotti somehow managed to get out, one thing lead to another and the chinchilla ended up with a severly broken leg. Off to the er he went, but my vet is away so he had to see his partner. They set the leg and wrapped it. He was scheduled for surgery on Monday(tomm) but my BIL said NOWAY infection by than. So he went to Queens Friday morning and had the surgery. He has one pin down his entire leg. Chili has now been moved from a huge 4 level cage to a small carieer for the next 4 weeks. I am feeding him every few hours by hand and water by surenge. I am going to share some pics from tonight, please dont be alarmed he is very fine and tougher than nails. He just has to be stable for the next 4 weeks. His cone comes off when DH holds him but I leave it on just in case I get bit or have to tend to Sammy real fast. His fur is very greasy from the surgery, just a few more days and he will get a dust bath. Most chins never survive the shock from the break little lone a surgery, amputation is the usual route. Chili has been with us since he was 9 weeks old and he is approaching 6 years in August! (life span 20 years) Sorry this is so long....
MomofTay&Sam replied: one more from tonight
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Awwwww! He looks so sad I'm glad he is doing fine, though. It sounds like you are taking great care of him. I'm sorry.
~CrazieMama~ replied: Awwwwwwwwwww, poor Chili. Glad he made it through surgery and is doing good. But I am a little ignorant when it comes to unusual pets. Exactly what is Chili? I see whiskers, but am not sure what it is. I am sorry I don't know.
CantWait replied: I really hope chili gets better soon. Little snuggles to him.
MomofTay&Sam replied: Thanks guys! He is a trooper!
HappyMom he is a Chinchilla they orginate from the andes mountains, they are completely extinct from there now. He is from the rodent/rat family. Most people know them as a *fur* coat..egads!! These little guys and gals live up to 20+ years in captivity given the right diet and life stlye. A very complicated creature. They are very destructive in their early years. They eat your doors your window sills and alot die from chewing on eletrical cords. You must chin proof as you do baby proof. My boy is what they call a dark standard in the chin world and they start in price around 150(thats very cheap) I paid 500 for him and all his supplies almost 5 years ago. I was taken. Chinchillas come in white, black, pink tones and so much more. I never bothered learning the mutations, wasnt going to breed anyways. He is doing great right now but his pee pee is out and thats not a good sign. We lubed it for him and hopefully it will be back in tomm morning.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Awww poor little guy! He is so cute, I hope he gets better real soon!
~CrazieMama~ replied: Awwwwwwwwww, poor little guy. Thanks for explaining that to me. Now I know.
paradisemommy replied: aweee..i have always thought chinchillas were the cutest but i was at a pet store and looking at one and had put my finger in the cage to try and pet it (yes there was a sign there but i ignored it because my dh kinda dared me to do it.. ) and it bit me...and boy was that thing gushing blood...
but i still thing they are cool!!
MomToJade&Jordan replied: That poor little guy. I have actually considered getting a chinchilla. I might wait until Jade is older though. He looks good for what he went through and is a very lucky guy to have tossled with a Rottie and lived. I love the breed but when it's Rottie vs Chinchilla the Rottie usually wins. I hope Chili has a speedy recovery.
aspenblue1 replied: Poor Chili. He looks so pitiful. I hope he gets better soon.
