Moms with bi-racial children... - I love her hair but...
7thHeaven wrote: I've been meaning to post this for a while and kept forgetting I was just wondering what you guys used on their hair. I love Sam's hair, but it's it driving me bonkers!!
With Sam, we shampoo everyday with a lavender shampoo & use Johnson's & Johnson's detangler on it and fist off, it doesn't help with the tangles and secondly, she gets into her car seat and starts rubbing her head on it and by the time we get where we're going, it's all dried out and puffy.
Is there anything you guys recommend? You think I could put some moose or something on her hair?
paradisemommy replied: sorry..i have no advice, i just wanted to say you have a gorgeous family..your daughter is absolutely precious!!!
MyLuvBugs replied: I know my kid isn't bi-racial, but her hair does the same thing b/c it's so baby fine. We've resorted to only washing her hair a couple times a week, just to keep some of the natural oils in it. We also use a detangler everyday and it helps, but when she takes her nap or sits in the car seat....the back looks like a big frizzy mess. My only advice I guess would be to cut back on washing her hair everyday, and take the detangler with you everywhere. Sorry.
BTW: You're daughter and yourself are gorgeous!!!
CantWait replied: Ditto, absolutely gorgeous family.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Ick. I have very coarse very tightly curles hair too - my kids have curly hair too - but it's not as thick as mine, and I pray that it never gets that thick... it really is a pain in the a....... anyways - what I found works is first, not to wash every day - more like every second or third day. Secondly - I bring a small spray bottle filled with water and a few teaspoons of leave-in conditionner - and when we get to where we're going, I just spray the back of my daughter's head and re-comb it. I use it on myself when I need to, too.
My son's hair is kept short, and my other daughter's hair is still too short to make a big frizzy mess yet.
amynicole21 replied: Yes, we have the same issue. We wash the girls' hair every other day and put a lot of leave in conditioner in it. In the morning, we use a bottle filled with water and regular conditioner (we are using Pantene at the moment) and spray it down. We also use some of the hair mayonnaise stuff to smooth it down. I find that NONE of the baby shampoos or conditioners work.
What really helps is to be sure you keep the ends trimmed... otherwise it gets really dry and tangles very easily.
BTW, your dd is incredibly beautiful
C&K*s Mommie replied: Our girls (well mainly our oldest) is a walking hair product laboratory. We try this, and try that, and although I have had success with some products, we still are looking for more.
Our oldest gets dry, frizzy, hair all the time. Some products last a while, and keep it nice looking others are made mainly of water so they do not do the job, as efficinently. Washing it less often may help. Like Amy said, keeping the ends trimmed should help too.
I have a list of products that we have had success with, but I cannot find the list right now. But right now we are using Loreal Kids detangling shampoo, and Soft and Beautiful's Just for Me line it is a creme conditioner and hairdress for kids. Also there is a carrot oil product that worked very very well for Christian. It is hard to find in stores, I noticed that Sally's Beauty Supply no longer carried it. I found it online, so I could pass that info on to you when I find it again.
You may want to also try professional products too, from Trade Secret or a beauty salon near you. That might work too.
As the others have said, you have a beautiful little girl!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: My niece is bi-racial. My SIL uses the hair products that are designed for black hair. They really help a lot. She sprays it with sheen as well and that keeps it from looking so dry.
My niece stayed with us for 5 days this summer so I know what you mean about the dryness, etc. It's really hard to control the frizz. But, my SIL was really impressed with my abilities to do her hair. She said I do a better job than she does.
coasterqueen replied: I don't have a bi-racial child, but my DD's hair is exactly like that. It's one big curly frizzball. She gets such tight banana curls that trying to get a brush or a comb through it is impossible without us both being in tears. Every morning I spray it down with water then take the brush through it very slowly. Her hair has to be completely soaked to get it through and for it to look decent. By the early morning it's a frizzball mess again...I just gave up trying to maintain it throughout the day. I just brush it again if we are going to go somewhere. She also won't let me put her hair up in anything except dance class because she says it hurts her head.
I've tried the leave-in conditioners but they just leave her hair greasy and slimy. She gets her hair washed every other day so there is no kind of build of happening.
I really do know how you feel.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: FWIW - you should only use a large toothed comb on curly hair. Because it tangles very easily, anything else will just snap the hair rather than untangling it. If you start from the ends and work your way up, it's easier too. Take it from someone who had waist length curly hair... brushes were and still are my worst enemy.
coasterqueen replied: Well we've used large tooth combs before and Kylie hates them. They don't do any better with her hair. There is only one brush she likes half way so that's what we use. Also we do start from the bottom up.....her hair is just AWFUL.
NikkiM replied: I agree with cutting back on washing her hair every day, and take the detangler with yoiu in her bag with a little comb.
MommyToAshley replied: I don't have any advice either, but when I saw your DD's picture I had to comment on how beautiful she is!
holley79 replied: I have no clue but wanted to say you have a beautiful family.
7thHeaven replied: Please do, I'll print it out and hold on to it if nothing else seems to work!
Thank You ladies! (for the compliments and advice). I've already started trying them!
C&K*s Mommie replied: I will get a new list together tonight.
I bought 2 new products the other night (although I wanted to try Pantene for dry hair- but I could not find any) to try. I plan to wash their hair tonight and use it, so I will add that to a list if I have success with them.
Brias3 replied: My niece is bi-racial and I happened to remember your post while I was talking to her mom today. She said she uses a lotion type serum called Curly by Nature. HTH!
