Milk in a sippy cup - Daily intake
moped wrote: I have been told that children need about 16 oz at this age of milk, soooooooo this morning I did not give him a bottle (YES I still give him a bottle) just to see and he did no notice or care, but he does not want to drink milk from a sippy.........how will I get him to drink his milk - or supplement with other dairy foods??????
Bad mommy I know, but I love that quiet time with him!
I will try to cut out the bedtime bottle soon too
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Logan loves yogurt and cheese. But he'll drink milk from a sippy. I know how hard it is phasing out that last cuddle time bottle, I can cuddle Logan with the night time sippy, though. Have you tried mixing ovaltine or carnation instant breakfast with Jack's milk sippy. Maybe changing the taste with something that tastes good (like chocolate ) would help. I use carnation with Logan for extra calories as he is small, but I don't make it the same concentration as the can says. I make it much more dilute.
moped replied: Good idea, but I am not sure Jack needs any extra fat or calories, so to get in the habit of choclate may not be so good for him. I will see how he does with the sippy cup - he does love yogurt!
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Ovaltine may be a good idea then, chocolate taste, just enough to flavor it, not as much as they suggest. And it has vitamins, but not the extra cals like carnation.
moped replied: Is ovaltine a powder? I may check this out
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Yes, I think you can find it with the chocolate milk mixes.
moped replied: Thanks Kelly - very helpful as usual!
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: You're welcome, Jen. Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it and it made me smile.
MyLuvBugs replied: Well, Lorelei gets 4 full sippy cups full of milk each day, and 1 of juice with water. Her total milk intake each day at 14 months is almost 32 oz. And our dr. says that's just fine. To me 16 oz doesn't seem like a lot of liquids in a day. Especially since they tell us as adults to drink 4-5 8 oz glasses of water each day. So, I wouldn't start just taking away milk from him just b/c.
As for drinking out of a sippy....Lorelei REFUSED for awhile, but then we found these awesome new sippy cups with soft spouts. They're called Nuby. They have some with nipple type tops, some with spouts, and some that are hard spouts. We started her on the soft one to get her used to it, and then after she started chewing through them, we gave her the hard one which she hated. The thing that worked for us was to take the plug out, give her a drink without the spill proof plug, and then put the plug back in, and she figured it out.
I hope that helps.
moped replied: Jack will drink from a sippy, but he translates that to water or juice, not milk - LOL,,,,,,,,,,in total he drinks likley 3 or more a day, but he thinks milk is in a bottle. And it doesn't matter what sippy cup, he can use them all. It's the milk ya see.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Oh, I hope you can change his mind. Don't want bottles forever, but like you said, that cuddle time is so precious and fleeting.
moped replied: Well as of now he only has 1 bottle before bed - by end of Feb early March he will be done - PROMISE
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Okay, I'll ask you. LOL. I haven't got Rae's discipline with bottles. Logan only gave up the final night bottle 3 weeks ago. So I am pretty bad too. Just shy of 17 months when I finally bit that bullet. I think Logan did better than me.
ETA I think Aaron missed it more than either of us. He used to just hand him a bottle and go back to sleep for half an hour in the morning, it's not quite that simple now.
Jamison'smama replied: What if you used the soft Nuby sippies (my kids love those too) and held him like it was a bottle--do you warm the bottles? Just do the same thing--just sub in a sippy.
Jamison never drank milk--still doesn't. She drinks water ONLY! I get her calcium in wherever---cheese--milk in her oatmeal, more cheese, ice cream---anywhere. The do fortify the orange juice with calcium these days---you may be able to sub in other stuff until he'll drink the real thing.
For now, enjoy that bottle time
blue72 replied: Jake didn't like his milk in a sippy cup either. He would drink juice fine but spit out his milk. When we stopped giving him his bottle, his milk intake was a little low for a few weeks but he adapted. I think as long as you are offering the bottle he will probably not take milk real well from a sippy cup. I wouldn't fret about still having him on a bottle. They grow up too fast!!
mummy2girls replied: jenna didnt like her sippy eaither for the longest time. I swear i had every sippy known to man...LOL.. but i did come upon one at walmart from NUBBY..it is different colors and the spout is as soft as a nipple. And she tookt o that and then before i knew it she threw away the bottle and only wanted the sippy!
as for other dairy... cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese,
MyLuvBugs replied: I say just take the bottle away and say, Sorry kid you get milk in a sippy. The nuby ones are awesome and the most bottle like with the soft spouts. Just try them to get him started. They're cheap.
~~*Missi*~~ replied: Sabrina has Always been a poor eater and drinker. When i was pumping exclusively (BM) for her she never ate more then 22ounces a day that was til 10m. Then I switched her to milk because i was preggo and unable to pump. She never took more then 15ounces of milk. I took her to the doctors flipping that she wasn't getting enough blah blah. (these are all milk totals NOT fluid totals)
Now I am lucky if I get 8-12ounces in her a day. She gets a 8oz sippy in the morning and drinks maybe 1/2 and after nap i give her another 3oz sippy that she drinks, then after dinner we give her another 8oz and she drinks 1/2 all whatever.
At her 15m checkup last month i told the doctor that I can't get this kid to drink milk. He asked how much I was like MAYBE 8-12 ounces a day more towards the 8 then 12!!! He said NO WORRIES. He said to give her yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese etc... to make up the difference but as long as she is getting juice water and that little bit of MILk not to worry..... I am the ultimate worry wart. He said at this age (15m) they should only get 2 glasses of milk a day (no more the 16ounces) and i bought the AAP book and they say the same thing. To supplement with other diary products. Sabrina LOVES those fruit frusion yogurt drinks and yo baby makes them I have been doing them in the morning instead of a milk cup. She loves it better and she drinks the whole thing... Also Propel water makes a Calcium enriched vitamin packed water drink
luvmykids replied: Maybe it would help if you just quit the milk out of a cup until he's done with the bottle? Maybe once he gets over having a bottle at all he'll let go of that association.
BTW: my kids use Ovaltine also, it's not like other additives that are totally non nutritious, and it only takes the tiniest bit to flavor the milk, it's not even full blown chocolate milk, just tweaks the flavor so slightly.
~~*Missi*~~ replied: Hey jen here are some sites for other diary ideas

here is what the aap says on intake
Children 1 to 8 Years of Age Few data are available concerning the calcium requirements of children between infancy and the onset of puberty. Total calcium retention for weight is relatively low in toddlers compared with other age groups. An intake of 500 mg per day is recommended between 1 and 3 years of age. The optimal intake increases as the onset of puberty approaches. Most available data indicate that calcium intake levels of approximately 800 mg per day are associated with adequate bone mineral accumulation in prepubertal children (4–8 years of age). The benefits of a higher intake in this age group have not been studied adequately.4 Important in this age group is the development of dietary practices that will be associated with adequate calcium intake later in life.

Thats the link
Although data on calcium toxicity in this age group are limited, high calcium intake in small children may increase the risk of zinc and iron deficiency attributable to the adverse affect of calcium on the absorption of these minerals.4
Just thought they might help.... again i am the ultimatre worrier LOL and my doctor either gives me sites or book recommendations. When i am done being a mother i think i will be opening a library LOL
PhiMuMommy replied: try the soft tipped sippys.. they feel more like a bottle. or a bug juice bottle that has been cleaned out. it is shaped more like a bottle but is a sippy. (it's more of a sports bottle)
that is my advice. hope it helps.
moped replied: I have a few of those soft spout ones and I tried it this morning and he laughed out loud at it - so it put it in a regular sippy and he is ok with it - not great buy ok............so no bottle again thismorning - it's the bedtime one that is going to be tough!
Thanks ladies - very helpful
My3LilMonkeys replied: Just to add a slightly different suggestion - and Jack may not be ready for this yet - but maybe you could try giving him his milk in a regular kid's cup? With it being something new and different it might be exciting to him and make the transition easier.
moped replied: I will try that - he might be ready but I am not - LOL. Thanks I will try it tomorrow morning
ediep replied: try not to worry about it....Jasonis like jamison in this way...he drinks only water. NO juice, no milk, nothing else. The last day he had a bottle was the last milk he ever dranks. I just give him cheese, pudding, ice cream, I buy bread with calcuim fortified, granola bars are calcuim fortified, even goldfish crackers
he'll be fine with or without the milk
A&A'smommy replied: LOTS of yogurt and cheese if you can't get him to drink milk ORRR try adding a little ovalteen that is what we use for ALyssa because she will NOT drink plain milk never would!!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Kelly, you're funny, I've never thought of myself having much discipline, but thanks for the compliment! I just had to go cold turkey with Wil, but we made the switch at the exact time we went from bottle to sippy. SO he didn't get a choice. All liquids come in the same container - sippy cups. It took awhile, but he got it.
Not sure if anyone already suggested this Jen, but we started using the Avent bottles and adding the sippy tops that they make. So Jack could still have the comfort of a bottle (sorta), but he gets the sippy top. I guess this may only work if you already use Avent bottles.
I'm sure Jack eats plenty of other good dairy products, so even if he doesn't drink much milk during the switch, I'm sure he will be fine. BTW, we do 24 oz of milk per day. That's what my ped recommends at this age, but my ped is also an anti juice ped. So we only do one sippy of dilluted juice a day.
