Milk Man..... - Do you think it's safe for a baby.....?
akbutterfly83 wrote: My aunt and uncle adopted all 4 of their kids, and gave them milkman (powdered milk) insted of formula..... cause one of the kids couldn't take any of the formulas.... and you can't give a baby regular milk so young.... and since she adopted she didnt breast feed....
but I was just wondering if anyone has tryed that... or done that..... or even heard of that... and is it safe for a baby?
Kaitlin'smom replied: sorry I was thinking of Milk deliverd by a man when I saw Milk Man
never heard of it and dunno if its okay.....maybe someone else knows
MomToMany replied: I've never heard of it before. My guess it wouldn't be safe. Breastmilk or formula is what an infant should have for the first year, unless medically approved and following a doctor's orders under special circumstances.
coasterqueen replied: My mind tells me no that it's not safe because a baby needs the nutrients that breastmilk or formula provides. But I honestly don't know anything about the milkman stuff.
Is there a problem that you would need to give it to him?
akbutterfly83 replied: just curious, just incase.. cause we have tryed differant formulas with him... and he either wont drink them, or he get's sick from them..... the dr told us not to give him 2 of them before we left the hospitel... and told us if we have the same problem with other ones then don't use them.....
akbutterfly83 replied: Opps fergot.....
And he's seems to not either be getting full enough on bm, or something is wrong... so I was just seeing my options.... just incase I need to find somethine else....
The other thing I thought of is mixing the baby cerial with bm, or formula..... to see if that fills him up... but I'm trying to just get options right now... we got to the dr on tue....
Kaitlin'smom replied: at 2 weeks old I would just nurse on demand, has your milk come in yet? I would really try advoiding suppleming just yet. I remember feeling to like kaitlin was never full, and was told to give her cereal by family but i did not and my ped said it was not nessary and not god at such a young age there tummies cant handle it.
coasterqueen replied: Cereal is definitely NOT the answer. He is way too young to intro solids. You could open up a whole world of problems doing that as his gut is still open til at least six months of age. If he's having trouble taking the formula the cereal would just be worse.
Why do you think he's not getting enough breastmilk? What are the symptoms? It's VERY common for a first time mother to think her child is not getting enough breastmilk. It's a very common concern .
akbutterfly83 replied: milk has been coming in since the day after he was born.....
That day the lac had me pump adn i pumped out 3oz, then i pumped every two hours... by the next visit, I was making 6oz then by the time i was going home and for 4 days after I went home I was making 8oz, then it just stoped... all together and I was just making enough to feed him... and then he was eatting and still acting hungry after... and in the past few days he's been eatting more times, but less milk.... and getting really bad yesterday... cause with the change he's been getting fussy, and a lot of hicups.......
ediep replied: I don't know anything about breastfeeding, but I would say that powdered milk is not a good idea. We used carnation good start formula, it is supposed to be easier on the baby's tummy that some of the other formulas out there
Kaitlin'smom replied: sounds like your having suppy issues.....I dunno much about that part but I know others do here so i will let them help with that.
the only thing I remeber is when I felt low I would drink a beer....something in the yeast helps with the production of BM
coasterqueen replied: Okay, first off the amount you pump is NO indication of how much breastmilk your breasts are making. A baby is much more efficient at getting milk out of your breast than a pump is.
Are you only pumping milk for the baby? I'm curious because these first several weeks are EXTREMELY important times to *establish* your supply and nursing is the best way to do that. If you are giving bottles of ebm or supplementing in other ways that is only going to hurt your supply and I can guarantee you more than likely are going to have issues to where you will need to go to supplementation full time.
Here's an excellent link on determining whether your supply is REALLY low or not: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html
Now babies go through many growth spurts in the first 6 weeks or so and so they may seem like they are hungry 24/7 and wanting to eat constantly. Sometimes it can make them fussy as well.
This link has info on the growth spurts as well as fussy babies: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/f...le-nursing.html
Everything you are experiencing is completely normal. Hang in there! And ask as many questions as you need. We are here to help.
kimberley replied: ITA agree with everything Karen said! 3 wks is wayyy too early for cereal and the amount you express is zero indication of how much milk you actually have. i could only express 2-4 ounces with Jade with a letdown but she is getting tons from nursing at the breast. and she went thru a growth spurt at 3 weeks old, nursing round the clock for about a week to build up my supply and then she was back to normal until the next growth spurt. hang in there!
akbutterfly83 replied: thanks for the info... I was getting really worried.... didn't know if I ate something that he wasn't liking, or not eatting enough, or not drinking enough.....
And I thought about having a beer, cause I heard something to do witht he yeast helps.... but dh was worried that I had to have a few bottles of bm to drink a beer... cause he heard that you have to wait 2 or 3 days before bf again after drinking.... and I told him that must be if your gunna drink a lot..... but one beer shouldn't hurt.....
Anyone know about that one....?
mammag replied: My doctor said if you have a beer it could slow production and if I did have one I had to wait 2-3 hours before nursing again.
I used to pump at work when Kristen was a baby and my production got less and less but then I stopped working and nursed her more often and it increased again.
coasterqueen replied: Drinking beer to increase supply is a myth that just will not go away. It shows you how UNEDUCATED most peds/docs are about breastfeeding is all it does.
Here's a link that explains the myth and how it is actually NOT good to use for supply. http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/...rem_f.html#hops
And here's info on drinking while BF: http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/alcohol.html
I wouldn't recommend drinking while BF in the first few weeks or so especially with baby going through so many growth spurts and wanting to nurse often. The recommended time is one or two alcoholic beverages is safe to drink but wait 2 to 3 hours before nursing.
HTH!
coasterqueen replied: You've got a good doc btw ;-) Keep him, lol.
CCTandME replied: If I was stressed when I was pumping then NOTHING would come out. Try to relax. Maybe keep a food journal of what and when you eat and when you nurse your son. You may find a particular food is bothering him.
