May have to put my cat down

amynicole21 wrote: My cat Mona is 13 years old and has an overactive thyroid issue. Basically, she is starving all the time and a psychotic mess. We have her on meds twice a day, and the vet said that her levels are good now but she isn't improving as much as you would think. She has been losing weight for a while, and is now basically skin and bones despite eating at least twice as much as she used to eat sad.gif And now she has started peeing and pooping all over the house. Yesterday, we came home and she had peed on the couch (which we keep covered in plastic for this very reason) and on the KITCHEN TABLE! She had also pooped on the baby's high chair. growl.gif DH woke me up this morning with "she pooped on the couch, can you clean it up?" Lovely thing to do before you are even fully awake yet dry.gif She also stole my cheeseburger from my plate this weekend. growl.gif

DH hates this cat... she's not very loving to anyone but me. I can tell he wants me to put her down, and I think we're getting to that point anyway. She has trouble jumping up on the shelf we put her food on now, which is a new issue that developed last week. I just don't know if she's bad off enough to warrant putting her down, you know? I don't want to do it just as a convenience to me. sleep.gif I guess I need to take her to the vet to see what he suggests. Ugh.

Thanks for letting me ramble...

coasterqueen replied: ((HUGS)) Have you talked anymore with the vet about other options?

We have a cat that is headed down that road. She eats more than ever but she's losing weight and is already skin and bones. She's not pooping or peeing on the floor but she pukes alot all over the floor. She's a mess. I personally do not like this cat and want her to be put down, but Ryan loves the cat and I couldn't bare to do it either. blush.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: I hope there are viable options from the vet, for you and this cat you love so much. hug.gif If not, hugs for when you have to make the decision to put her down. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: hug.gif hug.gif I know how difficult this decission is. I myself had a cat that peed and pooped everywhere. It finally became too much and we decided to have him put down. They are like members of our family! I'm so sorry you have to do this! hug.gif hug.gif

mckayleesmom replied: This is what my dh said to me...If an animal has to live on medication...they are suffering. So I would suggest putting her down as hard as it may be.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: hug.gif I'm sorry Amy. We recently had to get my old cat put down and it was really hard. sad.gif It was the right thing to do though because she was miserable.

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: That is a hard thing to have to decide, we had to put down our 16 year old dog last nov. Good luck with what ever you decide hug.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: hug.gif Hope the vet can help you! These are never easy decisions to make, even when it's necessary. hug.gif

jem0622 replied: I am so sorry she is having health issues and everyone is starting to lose patience. Lots of P&PT.

jcc64 replied: My mom's cat had that tyroid thing, Amy, and after being on the meds, she recovered her full body weight. Is it possible there's something else going on as well? My beloved cat Ruben had the same symptoms- and at the end he was down to about 6 lbs. The vet discovered a tumor in his stomach, and no matter how much he ate, he was never gonna be able to sustain himself. The last straw came when he lost the ability to jump. It was a very hard day when we decided to put him down (one of only 2 times I've ever seen Steve cry), but it was the right thing for the cat. He was gone within seconds of getting the shot, which told me he had very little fight left in him by that point.
I'm sorry- this is the not fun part of owning pets. hug.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: I'm so sorry sweetie. sad.gif hug.gif It's so hard when you have a pet that you've loved for so long and it falls sick. Didn't our Vet give you options at all? I know your DH isn't a cat freak, but still...He has to know how much the cat means to you. I hope that you can find something to help the kitty. hug.gif

kimberley replied: sad.gif sorry to hear that. let us know what the vet says. hug.gif

amynicole21 replied:
That's what I'm thinking... I made an appointment for Wednesday to see if anything can be done, and if not we'll put her down. sad.gif

My2Beauties replied: I agree with Jeanne, maybe there is something else going on. Bless your heart, I'm really sorry, the decision to put a pet down is never an easy one, they are like our kids. hug.gif hug.gif Hope the vet gives you other options, keep us updated!

A&A'smommy replied: Ugh poor thing... it does sound like she is at a point where it would be kind of wrong not too (unless there is something else you can do for her) I'm sorry Amy thats hard!!! hug.gif hug.gif

Edward's Mommy replied: That's such a tough choice to make. My dog was really sick for a while and she starved herself (I think she knew it was the end for her) and one day my grandmother called my dad at work and said, "I think Sammie in dying right in front of my face." She was crying so hard and my dad drove home and they took her to the vet. I guess on the way down to the vet, my dad looked at my grandmother and said, "What are you thinking, Mom?" and she said, "That when we leave the vet, Sammie won't be coming with us." bawling.gif Gosh, I'm crying right now! They got to the vet and the vet told my dad and my grandmother, "Guys, this doesn't look good." and he went to get a needle to put her to sleep. Sammie licked my dad's face, gave out a last whimper and died in my dad's arms. He was so heartbroken. She died on November 10 of last year and 9 in the morning. Her food dish and her water bucket are still in the same place they were when she died. There's food and a dog treat in it, with a piece of popcorn. My grandmother changes her water everyday. Sammie had a tumor that erupted in her stomach. She bled to death on this inside. bawling.gif So I feel your pain. Sammie had a thyroid problem too. We gave her amxecillion twice a day.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'll be thinking about you, Amy. hug.gif That's so sad. sad.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: hug.gif I know what you mean Amy. I'm in the same boat with my cat. It seems our DH's were conversing today about their cat woes. rolleyes.gif Mine has never really liked the cat but she kind of grew on him. When she had gotten lost last year though, he saw how much easier it is without her around. I think that was kind of the beginning of the end for her. We actually both got used to her not being here and honestly, it was kind of nice. blush.gif I know that sounds kind of harsh but there was no catbox to fight over who cleans, no water dish washing etc.

She's been a good cat, very loving and sweet and I do feel bad about the decision to have her put down. It is best for our family though. I am really trying to focus on the pain in the butt things about her so that it doesn't hurt so much. I'll miss her but I won't miss her messes. bawling.gif

I'm sorry about Mona. Hopefully the vet will help you make a good decision.
Hugs.

CAMSMOM1 replied: I know what a hard decision that is to make. After 13 years you become very attached, and they are part of the family.
My sister just had to go through this. Her DH's cat was 10 yrs old, and was having a lot of medical problems, peeing/pooping everywhere, couldn't breathe right, it was hard to watch. They realized after everything they tried, they didn't want their cat to suffer like that anymore. It's hard to watch them that way, and it's just as hard to put them down.
I will pray for your family, it's hard seeing an animal like this. I hope you get some answers on Wednesday.
