Math in kindergarten??

sparkys2boys wrote: Is anyones else kids doing any math in k-garten? Cameron's isn't doing any at all yet and I am sorta surprised at this. They are mind you doing a ton of other things, reading, writing, etc. Cameron and I have been working on addition at home and he is doing amazing.. I think. He can add any number combination up to 10 without much thought. Am I wrong, should he be able to do more then this at 5?

MommyToAshley replied: Ashley is in kindergarten and they are doing basic adding and subtracting. They are also introducing division, they just aren't calling it that. One question she had was, "if you have six apples and two friends, how many apples would you give each friend so that they have the same amount." (that's division). Included in their math studies is also counting by 2's, 5's, 10's (which is an introduction to multiplication) . Learning to tell time. And the values of money -- pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters.

She goes to a private school, so I am not sure if that is considered the norm or not. Maybe Cameron's class is just focusing heavily on reading and writing but will focus more on math next quarter? You could always ask the teacher.

boyohboyohboy replied:
caleb has been doing all this also, as well as graphs and fractions..
but they just started this after the christmas break.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
This is what Maddie did in Kinder.

maestra replied: Addition and subtraction to 10 by the end of kindergarten is the norm. I usually started addition and subtraction in Jan.

As for counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, that's normally first grade math, but the private schools usually do some things earlier.

If you google the state department of education for your state, you might be able to find the curriculum. Hope that helps! wavey.gif

aspenblue1 replied: Isabella does math in kindergarten.

luvmykids replied: The twins are in public school and doing everything Dee Dee mentioned except division.

Kaitlin'smom replied: Kaitlin is in PreK enriched and doing addition/subtracton and some division and multi ohmy.gif she is really good at math so far, I even told her you got mommys math brain laugh.gif

lisar replied: Lexi was doing single digit addition problems in Pre-K. Real easy ones like 2+2 and stuff like that. Things they could do on the fingers.

jcc64 replied: They do math, but it's done in a way that they don't even know they're doing it. It's often incorporated into other subjects as well- when they do the calendar- there's alot of math-oriented spin-off activities. Corey's not doing the counting by 2's, 5's, 10's yet, nor any money stuff. If my memory serves, that stuff's covered in 1st grade in our district. They all get there eventually....

MommyToAshley replied:
I agree ... they all get there sometime. I think the schools try to put too much on our kids too early. Ashley is handling it just fine, but what's the rush? Normally I would not compare what schools are doing because it doesn't really matter... as Jeanne said, they all get there some time. However, we are planning to move in a few years and I want to make sure it's a smooth transition for Ashley and she's on track with the grade she will be in at the new school.

mom21kid2dogs replied:
Amen, sister! It's craziness. Government in schools~what a concept sad.gif

luvmykids replied:
My feelings too....like Jeanne said, they all get there eventually so what's the rush? mad.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: Math should start in pre-k! wink.gif Math just isn't adding and subtracting, etc. Math starts with rote counting, shapes, and number recognition when they are small. wink.gif

Tanner does math regularly at school, but not as much as reading and writing. Have you talked to the teacher about it and asked what they do? I always reminded my parents that just because they don't bring home something having to do with the subject, doesn't mean we didn't do the subject. wink.gif Many times math is hands-on in K and done in learning centers...not dittos and worksheets so you wont see things go home, but they are still participating in the subject through other areas of learning. The teacher should be able to show you or give you an example of the curriculum she/he uses for the subject if you ask though.

Tanner's class does adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, counting by 5's, 10's, etc., writing numerals, one-one coorespondance, shapes, among other areas of math. He is in public school. smile.gif However, he doesn't bring things home like he does reading and writing, but I know he is still learning it.
