Mastitis again
~Roo'sMama~ wrote: On the other side this time - it was only about a month ago that I had it last! My fever isn't as high as it was the first time but the night I came down with it I had the most awful shakes.
Andrew is refusing to nurse off the infected side - I tried pumping it this morning but only got an ounce. I'm going to try to get him to nurse off of it again at lunchtime but I don't know if he will - if he doesn't I suppose I'll have to pump again.
So anyways thats why I've been MIA - I've just been feeling really crappy.
coasterqueen replied: Just had mastitis myself a week ago. I unfortunately still had to work with session still in. But my fever wasn't high and I opted out of any prescribed meds. Can you believe the soreness in my breast just FINALLY went away yesterday?
Hope it goes away soon.
BTW, if he won't nurse, just keep pumping it, massaging it, warm showers, compresses, etc. You might try taking some Echinnacea now since this is your second battle with it. I've gotten so many plugs with Megan I started to take it.
moped replied: Whta is exactly is mastitis?????
jacobsmama replied: aww I'm sorry to hear this again! Karen had some great ideas.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Yeah Karen I think I had a clogged duct too... of course I didn't notice it until it was too late. I wasn't thinking I'd take meds this time either since my fever wasn't so high, but I was feeling so awful and the shakes were kind of scary and I didn't want them to come back.
coasterqueen replied: Oh I totally understand why you took the meds. The ONLY reason I didn't this time is because I've been to the doc for the kids so much lately and we go three days in a row next week...I'm just sick of doctors. Seriously, that was the only reason.
Hope they help.
coasterqueen replied: Jen,
Mastitis is a breast infection that usually happens because a plugged duct stayed plugged too long, but it can happen because of cuts, etc on the nipples causing an infection. It's like having the flu, seriously. Sometimes the symptoms are severe and other times they are just mild. It pretty much sucks!
moped replied: It sounds terrible........I am sorry you are dealing with that again Sara........I was lucky that I reawlly never had any issues BF as far as nipples went - I guess they were tough.............sounds yucky
Hope it goes away soon
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Thanks Jen I'm starting to feel a lot better today. Drugs are amazing things. You were really blessed to not have to deal with any of this - I'm really hoping that my next breast feeding experience will be more like yours! I just realized I'd better start taking acidophilus again or my thrush will come back... that's no fun either.
mammag replied: Hope you are completely better soon! I also just went through this (am just finishing up the antibiotic) so I feel your pain. At least the meds work pretty fast.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Yes the meds do work fast - I have a lot less pain today than I did yesterday and the redness is almost completely gone. Today is my third day taking them but only the second full day since I only got two doses in on the first day. It's such a relief ~ it's my left side that's infected and I always hold Andrew on my left hip, so every time I pick him up and hold him it would hurt so bad.
I'm glad you're doing better too!
dhoppygirl replied: I eat a yogurt a day, does taking acidophilus once a day really take care of thrush?? I have had thrush for the last month now. THe first doctor I went to tried diagnosing me with mastitis and put me on antibiotics. That didn't work, so I finally went to another ob gyn. She gave me nystatin oral drops to put on my nipples, but wouldn't treat my baby, who was asymptamtic. The pediatrician also wouldn't treat my baby because he wasn't showing signs. Finally, last week, he started showing signs of a yeast infection in the diaper area, so his pediatrician ordered some cream to put on it. BUT, I am still having cracked nipples and peeling and itching. Do you have any other suggestions to help me get rid of it???
My baby is 6months old. I never had this with my 3.5 year old or 2 year old.
Thanks, Dawn
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I have been taking it twice a day - two pills each time. I should actually be taking it more like three or four times a day really since I have to take my antibiotic four times a day. Eating yogurt has helped me too, and doing vinegar rinses after each feeding. All suggested to me by Karen (coasterqueen) I had thrush for a long time and went to the doctor twice and got put on diflucan both times - that got rid of it but it would come back when i stopped taking acidophilus.
kellymom.com has some more suggestions that are helpful too. I hope your thrush goes away soon - I know it's no fun.
