Lasik
Kaitlin'smom wrote: anyone have this done? I am considering it. Not sure yet if I am a canadate for it, but I just got new eye care insurance with some good benefits. Lasik is one of them. I am just wondering if anyone has had good or bad PERSONAL experience. TIA
PrairieMom replied: I'm wondering about it too. I have a coworker that is having it done today, and I grilled her about it all weekend. Here they have intrest free payment plans for you. You go in for a consultation, and they will do your surgery that same day! Then you have to go back the next day for a check up. That is basically all I learned.
The main thing I am wondering about is are you awake and alert through the whole thing? like, can you see the thing coming at your eye? and what is to stop you from flinching or blinking?
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I have an initial consultation coming up - i'm getting it done, if I'm a candidate for it.
And for the other question, they freeze your eyeball, and your lids are held open. Yes, you can see the red light coming.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I have not, that is something that I want though. I have known several people who have had it done- all with no complaints.
One word of caution, jic: One of my instructors recently had Lasik done on his eyes, he was telling us (the class) that his insurance would pay for it. Being that he is former military I figured that to be the truth. Since civilian insurance (as far as I know) will not pay for this elective cosmetic surgery. Sure enough, he had the Lasik done, the very next day called Tri-Care to get the ball rolling on them paying the balance- that is when he found out his insurance would not cover it at all, and he is to pay the nearly $4000 balance on his own. He was given the wrong info about insurance paying for it.
MommyToAshley replied: I don't know much about it but Rod is seriously considering having Lasik done. There's an excellent doctor in our area that I've heard wonderful things about from several people.
mummy2girls replied: jennas previous dayhome provider had it done. she had it done but then had to go back and redue the left eye... but once it was finished she saw a lot better and was glad she did it...
PrairieMom replied: Do they freeze your eyeball with medication that just paralyzes the muscles? or do they actually use some sort of instrument to physically hold your eyeball still? I don't do well with things touching my eyeball. And, is there pain?
Kaitlin'smom replied: that stinks, but I specifiacly signed up for this eye care cause it lists the benifits for lasik as long as they are a provider. I am going to call and see who is in my area.
Boys r us replied: Rick had it done about 6 yrs ago, it was a gift from me to him..the gift of sight!
His eyes were HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE VISION without his contacts. Anyhow, he had them done and the dr told him his eyes might be close to 20/20 after a 2 week healing period. Well...we went back for his 24 hr post op check-up and his eyes were 20/20..in under 24 hours!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!
We had his done in the DC area b/c it was cheaper than it is here.
Kaitlin'smom replied: so is his vision still 20/20?
Boys r us replied: yes! He tells everyone about it b/c it's been pretty close to a miracle for him!!
Mommy2BAK replied: My mom just had it done last wednesday actually, and she has 20/20 vision now.
luvmykids replied: When I had it done about two years ago they gave me a Valium before hand and just used numbing drops then put this contraption on to keep you from blinking...I actually liked it because when you had the urge to blink you felt like you did actually blink but your eyelid didn't go anywhere.
There was no pain, they tell you to stare at the red pin light and then things go black when they make the cut and then you see again....they also gave me a squeezy ball thing for when I felt the urge to flinch.
All in all, it wasn't bad at all and I'm totally freaky about my eyes, I can hardly handle the glaucoma tests And the result was sooo worth it.
I'm having a tiny fluctuation in my vision, I can't see quite as well as right after it was done, but mainly it's due to my eyes being dry which can be a long term effect but eyedrops make a huge difference, I've just been to lazy to use them.
And it totally helped with my problems at night, I could not drive at night before I had it done because of halos and glare, now thats gone.
eta: I had terrible vision, I couldn't even see myself in the mirror without contacts or glasses. I had such bad astigmatism that I almost couldn't even wear contacts anymore.
