Kyan wont stop spittin up

J-rod wrote: ok well Kyan is breast fed and we have began him on the bottle this weeek as well. thing is no matter what he spits up 3-5 times after each feeding. its not like a little...it seems to be alot (to me at least) he was 7 lbs 12 oz his 10 day appt. then he was 8lbs even on his 2 week appt. dr said he should be back to his borth weight ( 8 lbs 5 oz) by then...but he will see how he does this week. wanted him to gain 7 oz'x by this wednesday. im afraid he isnt getting enough nutrition. steph says im an over reactive dad and im scared...but he is fine. is this normal? do they spit up alot? he has been eating like 10 minutes on each breast, then burped, then a short bit later he gets a bottle. normally 3 oz. and we have given him Myclin (gas drops) to help his upset stomach.

also is there anything you can do to help your baby's breath? rolling_smile.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Both of my kids were big spit up kids. First of all, it always looks like more than it is. If you need proof, spill one tablespoon of milk on your counter and see how much it looks like.

To help prevent/lessen it, try to keep him upright as much as possible after he eats and don't move him around a lot if you can help it. Also, try to keep a bib on him so at least you don't have to change his outfit every time.

hug.gif Good luck!

J-rod replied:
we just started using bibs yesterday afyer going thru like 3-4 outfits a day. it helped...we only had to use one outfit for baby, but 2 for daddy. emlaugh.gif

i just worry about him not getting enough nutrients and developing some kind of ill ness. especially since mommy has minor allergies and asthma, and daddy has bad allergies.

My3LilMonkeys replied:
Someone will certainly correct me if I'm wrong, but as faras I know there is no way allergies or asthma could be caused by not getting enough nutrients.

Both of my girls are perfectly happy and healthy. The worst problem we had was with Brooke she spit up so frequently that she ate more often and it seemed like she was eating 24/7. If he spits up too much, he'll just eat more often to get his nutrients.

J-rod replied: im not saying the eating will cause allergies or asthma...im just saying hes already got a good chance of getting that...i dont want him to end up being sickly too.

BabyOwen427 replied: About the allergies and asthma stuff, the longer she bf the less likely he will develop any allergies. My DH was bf for 2 years and he is allergic to nothing, he also has amazing eyesight and hearing. Now I am not saying she should bf for 2 years, that's all up to her, I'm just saying the longer the better, and the more the better. If you're worried about allergies and asthma I would try to cut back on the formula, don't cut it all out if it is necessary for your lifestyle, but if she has to be away from the baby, or you want to feed she could always pump.

On a side note: I was a formula baby, no bm at all, and I had awful childhood asthma (I out grew it), and bad allergies yearround (still do).
Do some research on the correlation on bm and allergies/asthma.
HTH

EDIT: Just wanted to add, my baby is bf, and he spit up alot too. I don't think spitting up has much to do with formula or bm, just a wierd reflux.

Mommy2Isabella replied: Sorry to hear baby kyan is spitting up. The best advice I have is to keep him UPRIGHT after eating for about 30 minutes, and burp him upright as well.

Fortunately we don't have a big problem with spit up so Im not much help!

luvmykids replied: Colt was like that too, the trick for him was to burp him and then burp again and again and again, you could slightly shake him side to side and hear it sloshing in his tummy if he still needed to burp. HTH.

my2monkeyboys replied: It may be nothing, but if you are concerned, and you sound like you are, ask the doctor about it. They can check him for reflux, which can cause that. A friend of mine's little girl was on some kind of pediatric reflux meds and it helped alot.
The others were right on though about feeding more upright, burping a little more as you feed, not moving him a lot after he eats.
That should help.
KUP!

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Matt had pretty bad reflux and Johnny has it now. Matt took weeks to get back to his birth weight and The only reason J. was back to his birth weight was because i left his few hour old diaper on him, fed him just before going back, and he threw up on the scale smile.gif and he was exactly at 7, 2.
J. is still throwing up quite a bit but he atleast stays happy when he is completely upright. So we are getting great use out of our pouches during the day. And the only way he will lay down is if he is on his sife more toward his stomach.

if you or Steph are interested we have the fleece and it is a lifesaver

mom2my2cuties replied: I agree with the others, it could be reflex. My kids were also pretty big spit-upers...But they were both intolerant to milk, and both ended up on soy milk.

I would ask the pediatrician though, might be a concern with the weight loss. Also like Pam said, it usually seems like more than what it is.

ashtonsmama replied: I'm not sure about the spitting up, my sister's baby Jade spit up a TON and was super gassy and fussy for the first few months, they just were told to burp her alot and try some infant massage...I did that with A when he was gassy and it really helped, I still do it sometimes, you just gently take their little legs and rotate them against their tummy, KWIM? It does help with gas.

PrairieMom replied: Ally spit up a lot. She is being breast fed. I cut Dairy out of my diet and that really seemed to help a lot. My Dr told me it would take up to 10 days to really see a difference, I could start telling a little difference after 5 days.

Also, it seems to me that he is eating a lot. How often does he nurse? Mine is 3 months old and will nurse for about 20 minutes every 3 hours. If he is nursing and then getting a full 3 oz bottle is it possible that he is overdistending his stomach?

J-rod replied: yea we read last night steph should cut out alot of the dairy she eats and it will help. also read about the massaging too tongue.gif

thanks for the help guys.

the pediatrician said he would loose weight after birth, but by two week apt should be back or close to birth weight. Kyan was 5 oz under birth weight his second appt. dr. wasnt too worried cause he is doing good everything else, plus he had jaundice if that made a difference....i doubt it
