Kindle - worth it??
my2monkeyboys wrote: I am thinking of getting the new Kindle this summer, mainly for the purpose of being able to save money on books for Will. The curriculum we use uses about 10-12 books a year plus free reading. I am wondering though if it would save me any money, as I generally biy his books used off Amazon. From what I've seen, the ebooks aren't as cheap as I expected them to be. What do y'all think?
luvbug00 replied: i dunno about the kindle but i have a nook color and I love it! it does everything from internet to pandora radio to youtube to the books. it's super light and i have a cute little case for it. It's great for young kids with the colors and everything. just my 2 cents
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I adore my kindle. I haven't looked at getting any books for Logan on it, it's MY toy. But I know that I have to watch my spending on it, and I love always having a book at hand. If it broke this afternoon, I'd pay for overnight shipping on a replacement.
boyohboyohboy replied: I love my kindle. I have it free on my iPad. I know that rarely do I find a book under $10 And there is just something about having a real book in your hands. I have some free books on it now, my bible and study guides.
Can you get the same books at the library?
PrairieMom replied: Personally, I would go for an IPAD. I know, huge cost difference, but with the Ipad, you can still get a kindle for free to use on it, Or any other kind of e-reader, plus other apps that are educational. We have a bunch for Al, ( on DH's Ipad) there is even one where you trace the letters with your fingers, it sounds it out and teaches you how to spell phonetically. Math flash cards, Apps that help you learn to tell time... I think it would be more bang for your buck
Our Lil' Family replied: The Nook allows you to connect with a local library (if you have a card) and you can "borrow" books. So if you don't need them indefinitely then you could do that for Will.
my2monkeyboys replied: Unfortunately an iPad is WAY out of my budget -- we'll actually do good to afford a Kindle. Wish we could get one, but it's not even a possibility. As for the library here, we have a VERY small library and it takes up to 2 weeks to get books on loan from other libraries. Does the Kindle borrow from libraries, too, or is it just the Nook that does that?
ediep replied: I have a kindle and love it! I use it for myself, not the kids. I take it everywhere- gym, doctors waiting room, anywhere I might be waiting. There are some free or really cheap books, but the best sellers are usually about 9.99 each to download
Im not sure which childrens books are available
My3LilMonkeys replied: I absolutely LOVE my kindle and would highly recommend it to anyone - but I'd do some research first into Kindle vs. Nook for your needs - I looked at both and preferred the Kindle personally, but IIRC the Nook had a larger kid's selection.
As of right now, the Kindle doesn't offer any kind of lending features with libraries. But if you're in a small town, it probably won't matter either way - my library doesn't do Nook lending because we are 'too small for it to be cost effective' they say.
Pricewise as far as books go, every one I have bought has been either the same price as buying the actual book or cheaper, and you can get a fairly large selection at any time for free, including most of the classics. I follow a page on Facebook that recommends limited-time free books for Kindle and just downloaded a book of true stories from the Civil War that I'm excited to try out.
boyohboyohboy replied: I don't know what a kindle costs but an iPad now is $399 since the iPad 2 is out.
MommyToAshley replied: We can download books from the library's website for the iPad or iTouch. I wonder if it works the same for the kindle?
my2monkeyboys replied: I am thinking now that I may just end up going with a laptop. With our business software taking up so much memory, and our old desktop finally dieing on us we're going to have to get another one before too terribly long anyway. Add that to the fact that a decent laptop is only about $400-450, and I think we'll just wait a tad longer and save up for the computer. Then I can just download an e-reader app and have all our bases covered. I do like the iPad, but it kind of seems like a smartphone with a larger screen but no phone service, you know? I don't know.... I want to make the most of our money since we seem to be in such short supply of it. LOL
