Kayla sees the heart specialist today

MomToMany wrote: We will find out when she needs surgery. I'm scared to death, but trying to think positive!

At her 15 month appointment, the Dr. heard a murmur he's never heard before. They did a chest X-ray, but couldn't see anything. So the did an echo (an U/S of the heart) and found a hole about a 1/2 inch around in her upper 2 chambers. The Dr. said it was something she was born with, and said she will need surgery at some point, hopefully when she's older.

So we are going to see a pediatric cardiologist today to see when she needs surgery.

P&PT's are most welcome!! Thank you!

mammag replied: Lots of P&PT's!!!! Hopefully it will go the way you want and she won't have to get the surgery for a while!

amynicole21 replied: Wow! That is very scary. I'm keeping her in my thoughts... could it close up on its own?

A&A'smommy replied: LOTS of P&PT"s for you guys!!!

coasterqueen replied: ((HUGS)) Mollie. My boss' son was born with a hole in his heart. He is 8 I think now and they just finally said it closed. They chose to let it close on it's own. BUT they had to be careful with him. If he got a cut they had to make sure it didn't get to an infection, etc. So they saw the doc often to be sure of things like that.

I have heard they can close on their own. I haven't heard that they require surgery unless they are older and it isn't closing. Hopefully that will be the case for Kayla.

MomToMany replied: I don't know about it closing on its own. Our Dr. just gave us basic info since he's not a specialist. Maybe it will??

We will find out. I'll post what the specialist says.

Thanks for the thoughts & prayers!

jcc64 replied: Hugs to you- i know how scary it feels when you hear the words pediatric cardiologist or surgery. My middle ds Noah (now almost 10) was diagosed with a suspicious heart murmur at 2 weeks, and we were immediately sent to a pediatric cardiologist. He was diagnosed with a VSD, and while I can't remember what it stands for, it basically means a hole in the heart which was a congenital defect. We were given the "wait, watch, and see" diagnosis, and sure enough, at 18 months, it had closed on its own. My niece, whose dad happens to be a pediatrician, also had it, and hers' closed on its own as well. There are apparently different degrees of severity, some require surgery and some don't. I hope Kayla heals on her own, but rest assured, if she does need surgery, I am certain her outcome will be excellent. Cardiology is a promising area of medicine- there aren't many things they can't fix. Best of luck and try not to worry too much.

MomToMany replied: Thank you all so much! This is so scary for both Shane & I. You guys are wonderful!
