Katherine vs. food - round 362...or something close to it

This is all pretty typical and probably explains why she is so tiny. Well she started coughing when she was eating the bean and my mom asked if maybe she had some sort of physical problem that causes solids to be painful. She pointed out that K does cough alot when she eats and that she gagged horribly when we tried bottles (every single type of nipple). I mentioned it to the ped when she called to tell me when my appointment with the endocrineologist is and she perscribed zantac for a month to see if there is any change. I gave her the first dose at 6 and at 7:00 she fed herself 1/4 cup of oatmeal!! It may have been a coincidence because occasionally she will go buck wild and eat that much in one sitting but it is so rare. We'll see how it goes for the next couple of days. I have my fingers crossed.

Of course if that has been the problem all along I'm going to be quite frusterated that I never put the symptoms together so that we could have gotten her some food sooner but....whatever.

~CrazieMama~ replied: Wow, hopefully that is it and you can now finally get her eating. I know it was a long time. Brianna had a milk allergy or something and spit up something terrible for about the first 9 months or so until I realized what it was. I changed her formula and she stopped spitting up. So hopefully the Zantac will work. I will keep her in my prayers though.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: That is a good observation! Hopefully (and I pray) that everything works out and she does not have to have extensive tests run and be put through a lot. Her eating some oatmeal is a good start. Maybe she just has a gag reflex that makes it difficult for her to keep solids down, like your mom said! I will keep you in our prayers. (((HUGS)))

Kaitlin'smom replied: I hope this does help, sometimes it takes another person who is not with them 24/7 to notice things like that. I have a friend I can tell things to and they can see the black and white of the suitation instead of the gray we see....cousre sometimes then I feel like duh....but I am glad to have the insite.

Schnoogly replied: Well if she has reflux the zantac will definitely help (hopefully) This will be our situation soon too--Iain eats maybe 2 bites of food per day and gags on anything even slightly chunky. He never puts toys in his mouth either, so I am beginning to think he has an oral aversion. It sounds like our kids have similar eating troubles though, and Iain is also pretty small. I hope you can figure it out!

ediep replied: you know whats Funny? Well, actually not funny, but my neighbors kid is the same way. Well, he eats baby food, but he doesn't eat any finger foods or table foods. He is 13 months. His mom (my neighbor/friend) said he doesn't put anything in his mouth...toys, whatever. We were at the park and the ground was covered with wood chips, kind of like mulch, and she put him down, he started crawling and I said "oh watch out he doesn't eat the dirt" she said "don't worry, he doesn't ever put things in his mouth"

Jason puts anything and everything in his mouth. He ate the fortune from a fortune cookie today. Not the cookie, just the fortune! Maybe thats good luck!

MommyToAshley replied: Ashley had to take Zantac when she was younger for reflux. But, she never had any problems eating, but she did spit up a lot and have some projectile vomit. I guess babies react differently to reflux.

I hope the Zantac works for you and it solves the problem. How is she doing now?

kit_kats_mom replied: Hello everyone. Well, she is eating better. Still not great but better. She has fed herself about 1/4 cup of cereal each morning and eaten something every meal. Usually it's just 1.5 oz of some veggie and half a meatball but its something. Our appointment with the endricrineologist is this wednesday and I'm going to keep another food diary for the next couple of days for him. We'll see. The zantac does seem to be helping though.

Now her sleeping is all wacky though. We were up from 3-7:30 this morning. She was wide awake. Blech!

DansMom replied: Thanks for keeping us posted---I've been thinking about Katherine and hoping you get answers soon. Maybe the endocrinologist can shed some light on the situation, and it's good that the Zantac is working at least a bit.

amynicole21 replied: Sounds like a good start, anyway!! She probably needs to "learn" how to eat bigger portions since she's always just snacked on things. I hope it continues to improve!!
