Just in case you missed this news flash - newest holiday scam article
mom21kid2dogs wrote: I read yesterday that if you give gift cards from the stores that are freely displayed (think WalMart, Target) you need to be cautious about taking the fist card off the rack. Apparently thieves have come with a new scam. They copy down the account number on the first several cards on the rack. After a few days, they call the # on the back to see how much the card was activated for and then spend away. (you only need the # to shop online)
The article recommends always taking cards off of the back of the rack or purchase them from the service desk to be safe rather than sorry.
To bad these folks can't use this kind of inginuity on a real job!
KingMom replied: Thanks for sharing, I'd never thought of that and now that I know I will definetly take one from the back of the rack!
luvbug00 replied: Brad had a friend in high school who did this and also stole # from ATMs and got hundreds of thousands in things from it. well until the cops cought up to him he served a year and i think it's 10 year probation..
J-rod replied: thanks for the tip... i just emailed me whole family
gr33n3y3z replied: thats a good idea to do.
I think I'm going to buy bank gift Visa Cards this year
C&K*s Mommie replied: I heard about this. But I thought the #'s were hidden until you scratched it off. I will be cautious though.
Also, there was an article about buying counterfeit gc's from ebay. Theives mark the price of the gift card much lower than the actual price that is loaded onto the card, even lower than other sellers who are selling the same thing. They have a clone of the same card and can even spend your money that way too, without you realizing it.
mom2my2cuties replied: Something else to be leary of - Make SURE when you are shopping online you are using someone reputable. We found out through our CC Processing company that they had a new client who was manually doing credit cards and turned out - he was stealing money from the people - So make sure your cards are being done automatically and not being manually processed because then the seller has PLENTY of information to commit identity theft.
sparkys2boys replied: very scary stuff.. what some people won't do
