Just Wondering about something... - Toys R Us and a product of concern

holley79 wrote: So we got the Big Book from TRU and Annika and I were thumbing through it. Annika was marking stuff for Christmas. happy.gif We were having a good time. I then came across O Board (I didn't want any funky ads to pop with the name of the board.) So I'm sitting there scratching my head wondering why this is being presented as a good thing to little girls. I'm sure there are those out there who are not at all concerned about this but to me and my beliefs this is not something I want my daughter playing with. To me an 8-12 yo child does not understand this board and the wrong questions can be easily asked and sometimes just in fun. Am a overreacting a bit over this?

Danalana replied: I don't think you're overreacting at all. We will never have one in our house.

kimberley replied: ya i won't be buying one ever. maybe it's to go with the hoochie costumes?! rolleyes.gif

A&A'smommy replied: yeah I see it at toyrus everytime we go, we will NEVER Have one it our house its messing with something extremely dangerous!

HuskerMom replied: I've seen them at walmart too. I got one as a gift when I was in middle school, but I got rid of it a long time ago. Dh and I both agree we'll never have one in our house.

jem0622 replied: I played it in the 8th grade. That was my first experience. It was a bit of hooey to me. LOL.

Nina J replied: Oh god I never want to have one in my home, my friends and I used to do them in high school and they scare the heck out of me.

Kentuckychick replied: Say wha!??? ohmy.gif

I'm baffled by the whole thing... and the age recommendation... 8-12 years (huh?)

luvmykids replied: No way, no how, not in my house!

redchief replied: I think it's harmless fun. I had one. I never believed any of it, but I had a blast making my friends believe some of it. Am I wrong? cool.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: I dont believe in them, but I also dont believe in what they represent so we wouldnt get one..
I also think that the age is not appropriate, seems like it would be marketed to older kids..?

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I think it is too bad that they will market things like at Toys R Us...Where a Kid can be a....what is that slogan again???.....OH YEAH....A KID! rolleyes.gif

lovemy2 replied: I agree not my idea of a proper toy and I also don't get wasn't it PINK as in Breast Cancer?????

MoonMama replied: Holley I saw it too flipping through ours and I went ohmy.gif blink.gif unsure.gif too. It REALLY bothered me! I couldn't believe it was in there nor the age group! growl.gif growl.gif Never, never, never, NEVER in this house or near my child! growl.gif growl.gif

Celestrina replied:
I agree with you, but the age range seems totally off.

Edward's Mommy replied: We already have weird things going on in our house!!! Because of it, we had to take Preston's crib down. There is no way I would have one in my house.

mammag replied: I would never have one here. At the same time, I do think it's nothing in and of itself so I have no problem with them selling it and advertising it, especially since it's Halloween and they increase their chances of selling them now. I just think a parent who would get one for a kid in that age range would be a little off, given what it is encouraging.

gr33n3y3z replied: Its not harmless fun when people take those things serious

They are pushing that age group bc they are not selling those other ones any more so they change the color and shoot for a younger age and pray

stella6979 replied:
I agree that they are harmless fun. When I was in H.S. we'd play with one at sleepovers and there's definitely nothing to worry about. I mean, it's made by Parker Brothers, not some voodoo witch doctor. With that being said though, I do think gearing it towards 8-12 year olds is absurd!!!

Boo&BugsMom replied: I'm on the fence about the harmless fun. I agree with Lisa, for those who take it seriously, it's not harmless.

When I looked at the age I went blink.gif ohmy.gif as well. The pic even has a young girl in the ad. I think it's nuts personally. And why pink on something like that? rolleyes.gif

When I was in high school I played with one once. I didn't take it seriously and thought it was a bunch of hooey. rolleyes.gif I did it more or less to scare other people. But, I would never touch one again because now that I'm older I understand the seriousness of things like that and want nothing to do with it, and I will never allow one in my home.

My2Beauties replied: Those things freak me out noooooo.gif

jcc64 replied: I played with them when I was about 13 at sleepovers, and I'm still here to tell about it. Even back then, I knew it was b.s., but it was still fun in the same way that ghost stories are fun.

Crystalina replied: Wow. You guys really take that seriously don't you. huh.gif

I always had one growing up and me and my sister had such fun with it. I either moved it or she did to get the answers we wanted. happy.gif They don't really move on their own and when we threw ours away....it never came back. wink.gif And when I played with it by myself nothing happened other then I got all the answers that I wanted. emlaugh.gif

I agree the age is a bit off though. I think the starting age should be 12. Izabella will be 8 in April and I just can't see her understanding the concept of it. Not to mention all the mispelled words there would be. rolling_smile.gif

IMO it's just a game and is no different then playing Monopoly and still having only the money in your pocket that you had before you won the game. happy.gif

CantWait replied: My friends and I made out own board at 9 and up.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I truly do understand the BS side of it. The fun who likes me questions and the spelling out the guys name for yourself rolling_smile.gif But I have also seen the 'real' side of it...the side that totally FREAKED me out and I am not talking about weird things going on at a slumber party huh.gif There are people who take it seriously and who do so very well!

Danalana replied: It's not the board itself that can be harmful. It's what kids are doing with it. The board, itself, has no power. However, it encourages kids to delve into the spirit world, and there are evil spirits out there. There might be anything physical that happens, but I can guarantee you that those spirits have free reign when kids start playing with that stuff. It will eventually show up...whether it's in the area of fear, etc...
I'm sure most don't agree with me, but that's why we won't be having one.

luvmykids replied:
That sums it up for me too....as a game itself, it's nothing. It's the point of what the game is supposed to entail, meaning calling on spirits.

Cece00 replied: I think all of that is BS, so I dont sweat it. I've never played with one bc no one I knew had one, it seems like a really stupid game. I dont see the appeal, dont think my kids will either. I wouldnt buy one but only bc I think its a waste of $$.

MoonMama replied:
ITA Dana.

Nina J replied: I like to think they don;t work. But whenever Ive done them, its always scared me. But I have always tried to convince myself my friends moved the glass (we always used a shot glass).

But it scared me, the things that were spelt. My friends loved doing them, and I didn;t, so it eventually got to the point where I would move it myself, lol. I got good at moving the shot glass so no one would know emlaugh.gif They never found out.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: ohmy.gif I honestly didn't think they made them anymore. Wow, I'm shocked! And I definately don't think it's age appropriate for an 8 year old.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I don't really believe in what they're supposed to represent, although the one time I played with one, I had a really strange experience. the light flickered, and it got really cold in the room.
