Jury Duty

coasterqueen wrote: I got a notice in the mail this weekend that I have to call the weekend before November 6th to see about reporting for jury duty. dry.gif That's the day before the elections, which I'm up til the wee hours of the morning and Veto session starts right after that.

I told my boss today that it was bad timing and asked what I could do to prepare at work since I may be gone and he said, oh you'll still have time to do all your other responsibilities, you may just have to work late. mad.gif growl.gif I don't know what is up his bum today but I can't believe he said that. dry.gif

Knowing my luck I'll get a murder trial or something. Dh said I'm the perfect juror because I'm full of "what ifs". wacko.gif rolleyes.gif

Ahhhhhh! I don't want to do this.

lisar replied: SHHH... I told jury duty about 4 months ago that I was pregnant and couldnt come for that reason. ( I am not PG though) I work full time and them paying me fifteen dollars a day to sit there doesnt compensate for me missing my job.

Kaitlin'smom replied: hug.gif I woudl actually liek to at least to go throught the slection process. I have been called 2 times once for county, once for city. Never had to actually go, the city one was kinda annoying I was to report every friday for 1 month, however we were to call thursday moring to see if we would be needed. Never was needed but it was a PITA for me and my boss was less than thrilled.

MommyToAshley replied: I got called for jury duty twice last year. The first time I forgot to appear... blush.gif blush.gif blush.gif I called the same day when I realized I had written it wrong on my calendar. The clerk said that she would check me off and I didn't have anything to worry about... but to show up the next time I was called in for jury duty. I got another notice a few months later, which was a hectic time for me. Fortunately, the case was settled with a plea bargain at the last minute and the case never went to court. They said this happens a lot, so maybe this will happen to you too.

I too would like to go through the whole process and watch our judicial system in progress, but it was a very hectic time so I was relieved. I am sure I will be called again.

Boys r us replied: Ohhh no!!! Well, just make sure you don't give them the answers they want to hear when they are selecting the jury..lol!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Most cases settle, Karen. They need a jury pool for those rare exceptions, but I wouldn't get too worried about it yet. Even if you do get called, the likelihood is that the case will settle right before the court date.
As for what your boss said, well, growl.gif growl.gif

ETA, Aaron being an attorney would disqualify me from any jury pool. But I'd still like to go through it once.

mom2my2cuties replied: YUCK! I am so glad I have never been called for Jury Duty....

I would go insane...I can't sit, still & quiet, for that long smile.gif I tend to have to interrupt and ask my own questions. (Making references to last time I was in a court room)

ETA - Kelly - I hope you don't mind - I just e-mailed you a couple of questions that I had - regarding some stuff. Thought you might know the answers to smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Well lets hope this is how it happens.

DH tells me that the Defense wouldn't want me because I am so full of "what ifs" but the Prosecution would LOVE me as a juror. laugh.gif rolleyes.gif I am so full of what if's I'm not sure I'd ever be able to make a decision. blush.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: I would like to go through the process one time, too.

Hopefully it will be as Kelly and others mentioned, that the two parties will settle beforehand.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Actually the prosecution would probably hate you because the burdon to prove is on them. If you were coming up with what ifs they would probably help the defense. Aaron loves free thinkers on his juries.

mom2my2cuties replied: I was thinking that a second ago Kelly - but wasn't sure. smile.gif I know that it has to be proven beyond resonable doubt. But the what if's prevent that smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
my bad, you are right.

mckayleesmom replied: I have done it before....what a waste of my day... laugh.gif I have a bad back and sitting still for a long time was horendous for me.

mom2my2cuties replied: rolling_smile.gif Brianne's post just reminded me of something -

Just claim that you have a very mild form of Adult ADHD and it's too mild to medicate - yet it still effects you and you will be a disruption in the court room.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I got called for jury duty in July...I tried to get out of it because I was on bed rest at th etime so it was pushed back to December....great

Oh yeah FIL got picked for a week long case and he is an attorney, with a son that works for the police dept. After the trial he called the DA and told him what an idiot he had working for him because the prosacutor made mistake after mistake the first of which was keeping him biggrin.gif

MyBabeMaddie replied: I remember my mom got called in but it turns out she knew someone involved in the case! I think they should find a new way to find jurors but I guess they need it to be random! Can't you tell them you are prejudice? lol I don't know! I'm sorry!

Cece00 replied: Yuck. I hope you dont have to sit on the jury. I used to think I'd like to do that but who in the world would watch my kids & pick up the slack around here?? So I wouldnt want to do it either

msoulz replied: OMG, I don't know anyone who has been called for jury duty more than I. I have lost count but I believe it to be 8 times now (I am 40). I haven't gone each time though. The first two times I was in college (out of jurisdiction). The next time I had just moved from one county to another so I got out of that. I had to serve federal jury duty two weeks before my wedding (which got me off both times they tried to seat me on a jury, although one judge did say they could accompany us on our honeymoon before he dismissed me rolling_smile.gif ). Two times I was never even placed in the jury box and once I knew one of the witnesses. The most recent summons appeared last February so I wrote the judge and asked him to let me off until at least November as I was nursing my newborn, and he did let me off. I read recently that the judge has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia so I am not sure if I will be called again next month if he is not on the bench. I certainly wish him no bad health. I keep checking the mailbox. If he doesn't get me, some other judge likely will.

I really wouldn't mind serving on a jury if the crime weren't violent or drug related. But then we can't choose these things. rolleyes.gif

I really thought when I got married and changed my name, perhaps that would mix me up in the jury pool no luck, I have been summoned at least three times since then. I have a hard time buying the random thing when most folks I know have been called maybe once, if that! blink.gif

Edited because I either can't spell or can't type! blush.gif

redchief replied: banana.gif I don't ever have to serve petit jury duty. tongue.gif banana.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Why, may I ask? mad.gif tongue.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: I would love to do it someday for the experience.

My sister once went for jury selection and when they asked howshe felt about the case she told them that she didn't believe in prisons because they were oppressive to society. She didn't get picked. emlaugh.gif
