Jack is getting an EEG
Jamison'smama wrote: Jack has had 3 episodes of his eyes rolling back and ceasing to play/speak for about 5 seconds each time. All 3 episodes surrounded beditime/naptime so the pediatrician suspects it is sleep related but wants to rule-out seizures. We will get the EEG appointment date sometime today.

jacobsmama replied: I know what you are going through. Jacob had this done when he was 1 and again about 4 months ago. He does not have epilepsy and the procedure is very easy they put little things on their head and you get to hold them the whole time. Or you should be able too. It is very scarey and that is great that your doc is ordering it. And what is even better is that you noticed. Alot of times it goes unoticed. I'm just sure it will be ok.
jcc64 replied: Will it be a sleep deprived EEG, Brenda? Noah has benign rolandic epilepsy- which was diagnosed 1 or 2 yrs ago by a pediatric neurlogist. He had several seizures, exclusively while he was sleeping, that didn't even appear like seizures at first. My older son woke us the first time, terrified that Noah was choking to death in his sleep- was making these weird gurgling noises, completely catatonic, and drooling rivers. We freaked out, not knowing what it was, and threw him in the shower in a desperate attempt to snap him out of it. Eventually, it stopped, though he never really fully woke until the next morning and had absolutely no memory of it. It happened a few more times after that- we thought it was some kind of apnea, as did our pediatrician. Only when he did it during a car ride nap did we recognize it as a seizure. I hit the internet, and was actually the one who initially diagnosed it. We were sent to a neurlogist, who ordered both an MRI and the sleep deprived EEG. The MRI was normal, thank God, but the EEG revealed the abnormality that causes the seizures. I have heard that regular EEGs are not very effective at picking up abnormalities, which is why we had to do the sleep deprived one. The test itself is nothing, but preparing for it was not fun. We were only allowed to let Noah sleep for 4 hrs the night before the test. It felt like child abuse keeping him up, but I'm glad we did it, b/c we got a definitive diagnosis. Anyway, it kind of sounds like Jack is experiencing absence seizures, which I remember reading about while researching Noah's symptoms. I hope everything works out- PM me if you want- god, do you always have to copy my kids' idiosyncrasies?!
Jamison'smama replied: The doctor did explain the possibility of it being absence seizures, it does describe it to a T but since they are surrounding nap or bedtime and happen so infrequently (only 3 times in a week), he thinks they may also be explained by a strange relaxation thing, I had just given him his pacifier when two episodes occurred. I have no idea really. It is a sleep deprived test, I have to wake him up between 5 and 6, and keep him up until after the test at 1:00 so he'll be missing nap for the deprivation. The doctor said with those types of EEGs, we should have a definitive answer.
ETA, yes Jeanne, the similarities are getting eerie
DansMom replied: Oh, that is scary sounding. I hope you get some answers.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm praying for you guys, Brenda! I hope you are able to get some answers and that it is nothing serious.
I love your new pics, btw! I can't believe how big the kids are and they are so beautiful!!
sparkys2boys replied: Logan has something very similar when he was about a year old.he would get this glassy look on his eyes and you could not get him to focus on you for a min or two at the longest. I would slap my hand together in front of his face, or yell his name and not get any response. He would also right before this happened rub his ear down on his shoulder every time in a twitching motion. We had an EEG done also, where we had to keep him awake for 6 hrs before the test, so that we could get him to sleep at the hospital for the test. Easier said then done, by the time they wanted him to go to sleep he was over tired and cranky as heck and would not fall asleep for us, our doc had ordered meds to put him asleep so they gave it to him after an hour of crying, but it was the wrong dose for his age and weight, so it made him high as a kite but not sleepy(wasn't enough meds) the hospital could not give him more without our doc's ok, and a new prescription, by the time we got ahold of our doc, there was another appt scheduled so we had to wait, and still worse the pharmacy at the hospital did not have any more of the meds.. DH had to leave the hospital and drive for 30 mins to a pharmacy to get it himself. It was terrible. Sorry to steal your post and vent..lol. I hope that it all works out for you guys, in the end they told us it was seizures that are related to small children that can happen and they are not totally sure why but they do outgrow them, which he did by 2. Keep us posted and good luck
mom2my2cuties replied: Andrea spent a full week hooked up to an EEG because she had seizures for unknown reasons - Well unknown at the time. Turned out she was having a severe reaction to a medicine the doctor gave her. I will be praying for you guys and for a quick, and healthy diagnosis!
paradisemommy replied: oh man brenda..hope you have some answers by now..keeping you guys in my prayers..
jcc64 replied: Just wanted to add that it's not strange that seizures occur only near or during sleep. It's the exact reason why they want the kids to be exhausted for the EEG. Apparently, a tired brain is an active brain, from a brain wave perspective. This is what the neurologist explained to us, and it's why Noah's seizures almost always happened when he was overtired. Anyway, hopefully you'll get some answers, and remember, most of these kinds of things are outgrown. Noah hasn't had a seizure in almost a year now.
amynicole21 replied: Oh man - that's a scary thing to see your kid do! I'm glad you're getting it checked out. Let us know how it goes.
