It DOES have a language filter!!!

luvmykids wrote: I found the book for the DVD player...

It's called TVGuardian, or TVG, and it filters based on the closed captioning data on the disc, even if closed captioning is off! thumb.gif

It has different settings, from no filter to "tolerant" to "strict", and others for only sexually explicit and religious...etc.

Cool, huh?! thumb.gif

Anthony275 replied: ahh thats weird!

Boo&BugsMom replied: Neato!!! thumb.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: That's awesome!!!

luvmykids replied: I know it sounds like a silly thing to be so excited about, but there are some older movies that Colt really likes (John Wayne laugh.gif ) but under the OLD rating system, they're rated pg even though there is language I'd rather he not hear. He'll be so excited to know he can start watching his cowboy flicks again!

grapfruit replied: LoL! I've never heard of that.

Does that mean they COULD make a setting for cable that ALLOWS "bad words"?!?!?! I'd LOVE that! LoL

luvmykids replied:
LOL...you'd think so emlaugh.gif

Calimama replied: Oh that's cool! thumb.gif Glad you found it!

redchief replied:
I can think of no reason why they couldn't make it backwards compatible to allow cable programming to be broadcast and edited at the destination. I doubt we'll see that in the near future, however, because parental controls, as the law applies now, have to be turned on to be active. The nannies in congress aren't going to be satisfied that parents will be responsible for what their own kids listen to. It bothers me to say they're probably right.

luvmykids replied:
In theory, they could do exactly what this DVD filter does...base it on the closed captioning data. But like Ed said, the parental control would have to be on, and most people probably wouldn't bother rolleyes.gif But I think it's a great idea and actually, more and more bad language is making it's way to "prime time" anyway so why censor it on cable?

Anthony275 replied: ever watch comedy central at 1am on the weekends? uncensored movies are on, with nudity
thats kinda going over the limit

grapfruit replied:
See that's the time we do watch comedy central, b/c it isn't edited. Just so you know, it's after 11pm that it can go "uncensored" it's 1am on the east coast b/c that's when it's 11pm on the west...

Ed I agree, I think the technology is out there (the DVD player sort of proves it). BUT I think the lovely FCC has to keep their big nose in there. Thank GOODNESS. I mean, there's no WAY I could censor my own shows! I mean I might hear something offensive and forget how to use the remote control to turn it off or change the channel. rolleyes.gif I hope the FCC figures some way to cut my food up too...I mean using sharp knives could be dangerous!

Brias3 replied: Wow, that's awesome...I had no idea some of them had that feature!

luvmykids replied:
Me neither laugh.gif I just grabbed one, and had no clue until I used it for the first time and the set up for the Guardian came on.

Brias3 replied: I think I need to start reading instructions!

Bamamom replied:
What kind did you get? We've been looking for one with this feature.

luvmykids replied: It's a Magnavox, pretty sure the model is MVD2023. Got it at KMart.

Bamamom replied:
Cool - thanks!
