Isabella is sick - advice needed
aspenblue1 wrote: She started vomitting on friday night at 2:00 about every 1/2 hour until yesterday plus she got direah on sat. Well I called the on call line sat and sunday fust I was told that the vomitting would last 12-24 hours then 24-48 hours today I was told it could last about 3 days. Well since 4 I have changed her 10 times for direah and she has only drunk about 2 oz of water. Her nurse practicioner said they would call back tomorrow if the need to see her again they would. 1st I do not trust her when Isabella had acid reflux she told me to give her mylicon drops and let her suffer for another week until she got to see her PED. Well today while Isabella was in the office she had 3 poopy diapers and she wasnt worried. I am worried I am not sure if I should call the service again maybe just take her to the emergency room. She is really lethargic which that lady said was normal. She won't even sit her self up. Does anyone have any ideas?
mummy2girls replied: I would take her in to get checked.. The lethargic and major pooping and drinking little is a little worrisome for me. For my peace of mind i would take her in....
Jamison'smama replied: That sounds like a lot of sickness to me to wait much longer. When Jamison was sick with a stomach virus they were pretty cautious---how does her mouth and tongue feel--is it dry? Does she have tears when she cries? Both are signs of hydration--if no tears and her mouth is dry I think I would take her to the ER. They can get dehydrated fast--will she drink pedialite? Water is the hardest thing on their stomach according to my doc-- sprite, pedialite, juice, jello water etc. before water. Jamison would vomit water but not breastmilk. The diarrhea can last for 10 days but if she is still vomiting I would be concerned.
kit_kats_mom replied: Damn. Sounds like she's got that same virus that K had awhile back. It's awful. K barfed for 24 hours solid the first day, then it let up to two-three times a day for the next 4 days. The diarreah lasted about a week, but the frequency let up after awhile.
Is she running a temp? If she is still barfing more than once or twice a day, take her to the ER. If she is just not acting like your sweet baby, take her to the ER. If nothing else, an ER visit will make you feel better. They are still very susceptable to dehydration even at this age. If you pinch the skin on her belly or the back of her hand, does it snap right back or does it make a little tent for a few seconds? The tent would be a sign of dehydration. My sitters son had the same thing and he went from OK to seriously dehydrated in a matter of hours. I was really antsy about that so I ended up taking her to the ER on the third day. She was fine but they did give her a phenegran supposotory to help her sleep and quit barfing.
I'm sorry she's feeling puny. I know how hard it is to have a sick baby...not fun.
here are a couple of links with info about vomiting in babies and dehydration

aspenblue1 replied: She hates pedilite. She will get a tear after she has been crying for about 10 minutes. The nurse practicioner said that her mouth had some moisture in it so she was acting like I was crazy. But everyone I talked to that had the same thing has not had this much direah -- she has went through 2 packs of diapers in 2 days.
ediep replied: Poor Isabella!! I hope she feels better soon!!! I would take her into the ER if she is still vomiting like that it sounds pretty scary!!!
Jamison'smama replied: That is a lot! Jamison had this too--hers was rotovirus ---it is very contagious! Very watery diarrhea--distinct odor ick. She was also lethargic the first couple of days but then was okay--only about 5-8 diapers a day though--yours sounds worse.
Jama also hates pediatite--would not take ANYTHING but breastmilk (or water which I could give her after the vomiting stopped). How about watered down gatorade--or unflavored pedialite (Jama could tell but some babies can't)
If you feel you should take her in--then you should!
kit_kats_mom replied: There are also those pedia pops. K wouldn't take them but many babies will
CantWait replied: Sounds like your PED isn't listening very much and needs a kick in the butt. I would take her to the emerg. room just in case. It sounds as if she may be slightly dehydrated and it wouldn't hurt any if you did. I hope she's feeling better soon. It's so rough for babies and mommy's
paradisemommy replied: ita with everyone else. i would take her into the er. your ped sounds like she's not a very competent or compassionate person (from your previous experience). i know if you went to the er, it would give you peace of mind and also a second opinion so i say GO!
i hope she is feeling better soon. that really does sound like a lot of diapers you are going through...
booey2 replied: Hi sorry she is feeling to badly, if you haven't gone already IMHO I would take her immediatley to a doctor, either a clinic or emerg. I was always told to trust my instincts by my doctor. We went thru something like this when Matthew was smaller and he ended up in the hospital with iv's, severly dehydrated and with strepthroat. Go now and get her checked, I know I would feel better after she was seen by a real person and not someone trying to reassure me over the phone. Let us know how she is doing.
amynicole21 replied: Take her in. Babies dehydrate so quickly that you really can't risk it. I would call the ped once more, but if you don't get the response you want go to the ER.
Poor Isabella I really hope this passes quickly!!
A&A'smommy replied: Awww poor baby I hope she feels better soon!
DansMom replied: Daniel had something like this 3 weeks ago---and the diarrhea did last three days, the vomiting only about 4 hours. It was hard to get enough liquid into him too. I was changing his diaper every 20 minutes on the worst day, and it was just smelly water. Uggh! He did get warm, but not above 100 degrees. I did just wait it out, but was worried too. If you get too anxious, you might want to take her in, if only to ease your own mind that you're doing all the right things. Hugs to Isabella---get well soon!
