Infant & Child CPR - Just bought a dvd for CPR

MomsNPopsNYC wrote: Just wanted to let you all know that I just bought an Infant & Child CPR dvd. I think it's brand and has the new standards and procedures. It's called "Infant & Child CPR: Everything A Parent Should Know " and I bought it for only like ten bucks at Amazon. Seems like a good thing to have as pool season begins!!! If anyone has a better recomendation for this please let me know. Thanks. rolling_smile.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: That's neat! I should get that for myself. I haven't taken CPR since High School. Luckily DH is a CPR and Red-cross instructor. smile.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: make sure its the one with 30 compressions to 2 breaths

gr33n3y3z replied: bump.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
I jst took a refresher course mid-may...and that wasn't what they taught us... they taught us 10 compressions 2 breaths

gr33n3y3z replied: yeah they just changed it within the last month and a half
I have to go redo mine now shesh and I just took it over the winter mad.gif
Ed can explain it better then me for why the changes took place I will get him to post it shortly

MommyToAshley replied: The Y is offering a CPR course, which includes infant and child CPR. I want to take it with DH, but it's four hours long on a week day. I wish they would have split it into two different days... that's a big chunk of time to take out of the evening when you have a 3 year old.

I'll have to check the DVD out, thanks for the recommendation.

PrairieMom replied: Yeah, they just changed the "rules" a few weeks ago. dry.gif I have to go get re-certified now. how annoying! rolleyes.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: Uh Oh! I'd better tell DH this. He'll have to go through all those classes again too. LOL rolleyes.gif

redchief replied: Actually the "rules" changed beginning in March of this year, but none of the CPR instructors were certified by the American Heart Assoc. to teach the new algorythms. The new algorythms are indeed 30 to 2 for all except 2 person infant and child, which is now 15 to 1 (that's for 2 person only).

The Red Cross has not changed their official algorythms yet and tend to lag about a year behind American Heart in changes anyway. The American Heart Assoc. is the leading NPO on CPR in this county, at least where EMS is concerned.

The new algorythms are thought to be especially helpful with children, because greater blood pressures are developed under the new algorythms. Also, the quick arrival of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on scene is being stressed. I'm not certified to teach CPR, so I've actually said more than I should.

I think everyone should know CPR. If the only way you can get it is on DVD, fine, but I would prefer that everyone get trained in CPR by the pros. Most hospitals offer community CPR courses often; check with the hospital PR department for information.

Kentuckychick replied: Yeah, I took CPR again at the beginning of March and it's definitely now 30 compressions, 2 breaths (I remember well -- my arms got tired trying to save "Matthew McCoughnahey" wink.gif ) They said it was because as long as the blood is pumping through the body you're pumping oxygen and the person needs that more than the breaths. I think the thing that did and still always will stand out the most about the class for me was that people actually SUE people for performing CPR on them.

I liked how the instructor put it -- you cannot possibly kill someone who is already dead. Made me feel a lot better about potentially cracking a few ribs wacko.gif

lisar replied: It was required by the hospital for them to release Raygen from the NICU. So me and dh took it.

A&A'smommy replied: I'm taking an infant cpr class next month before I have the baby

mommymommy replied: Thank you so much for sharing this info! I really want to learn more!
