Infant CPR

HuskerMom wrote: Does anyone know how to give a baby CPR? It's been so long since I've learned CPR that I don't remember. I got to thinking that it's probably a good idea if I learned.

Danalana replied: I was certified as an EMT a few years ago, so i know some.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I don't really. Dh and I really want to go take a class but it costs about an arm and a leg. wacko.gif

lisar replied: Raygen was in the NICU and before they release them you have to take a 2 hour class on how to do Infant CPR. I took the class 20 months ago. I remember a little bit. But they gave me a cheet sheet that was laminated and all that I have one in my truck and one on the fridge at home.

Danalana replied: I PMed you smile.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I've been certified since I was 12 years old. Well, mostly, I did let it lapse once or twice and had to re-take it.

It's not that expensive...well not here anyways. It's about 100$ for a 2 day course, 8 hours a day.

coasterqueen replied: Dh and I got certified in infant and adult CPR last year. His work pays for us to get certified every year.

redplaydoh replied: I need to renew my certification. I used to be a CPR instructor and after holding all those classes I don't think I'll ever forget. But as we always preached in the class it is important to keep up with it and keep certified.

PrairieMom replied: As an RT I am certified, but really its not something you should learn on a message board. You should really take a class on it, or in the very least watch a video at home.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I was going to suggest you contact your local fire department and see if they offer classes, my sister teaches classes and she is goign to get me into one but I dont think they cost that much.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
For us that is a lot. We never seem to have an extra $50 laying around, let alone $100.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Well maybe you guys can set aside 10$ here and there... and when you have the money, go one at a time.

In any case... what always stuck in my mind - about choking anyways... is as long as they're coughing or crying... they can breathe. My mom freaks out whenever one of my kids have trouble with something and they're coughing from it...and I don't panic, I wait to see if they can clear it on their own. My mom rushes them and scares them more than anything else. rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

HuskerMom replied:
Yeah I know. I'll end up taking the class but I was just looking for tips or advice. smile.gif

HuskerMom replied:
That's a good idea. I wasn't really sure where to go to find out about the class. smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I do. I'm certified, and Troy will be taking a class soon to know how as well.

Farelle replied: Ask your peditrician for a handout. They should have one. I just took my son for his 15 month check-up and she gave us the CPR/Choking handout again. It's very handy to keep around.

redchief replied:
It really costs that much and takes that long there? Community CPR is taught in a four hour evening here. We run classes several times a year based upon community demand and need

redchief replied: Try this!.

There's a video link too.

HuskerMom replied:
Thanks!

MoonMama replied: Before I had Braedin I was a nanny from the time I was 18 on, and working childcare since 15. So yes. thumb.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Yes. I'm certified in First Aid, Infant, Child and Adult CPR. I think it's level C...? I'd have to double check my card.

They included how to do things like emergency tracheotomies, had us practice using items from around us as a first aid kit - like branches and ripped clothing, as well as using a defib machine.

There were general cpr classes available for a fraction of the cost, and of the time, but I needed level C because of the daycare thing.

redchief replied:
Gotcha... We call that First Aid and CPR for the professional caregiver here. Most people don't need that and opt for the shorter community classes.
