Ice Skating - is it simple?

I mentioned to Chris the other day that our local Civic Center has ice skating during the fall/winter months, and I would like to "try" it for the first time, along with our girls. He was able to score some gen admn tix through his work, so we plan to go at some point soon.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, as neither of us, nor our girls have even been.
sparkys2boys replied: I soooo love skating!!!!! It's not that hard, just have to take your time and be prepared to land on ya fanny a few times..lol!!! Have a great time, and I'm sure your girls would love it!
skinkybaby replied: Depends on the person. A friend of mine was good at it right from the get go, but I was always falling on my butt
kit_kats_mom replied: it's not easy but I think if you can roller blade (or roller skate) you will probably get it pretty quickly. I had the worst shin muscle pain afterwards though. That is a muscle I don't use often enough apparently and oh mamma they were sore for a week.
gr33n3y3z replied: I agree if you can roller blade then it should be easy for you I use Hockey skates when I use to go
Calimama replied: Depends on how good your balance is. I think it's fairly simple.. but you will fall a few times.
mom21kid2dogs replied: I've always been able to roller skate but never ice skate. I have pretty weak ankles and am very non athletic so those issues likely take a role in it. We have taken O skating a few fimes. The ice rink we use lets people hold on to the backs of small chairs while they are learning. Keeps one fanny slightly less bruised in the beginning.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Yes... I used to do figure skating. DH wore my old costume for Halloween...
I was pretty good, and I learned pretty quick... but it's different for everyone.
Ellie replied: My ankles wouldn't let me ice skate but my nieces were whizzing around easily
redplaydoh replied: I tried once... Can you say SPLAT about 100 times??? That was me.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I think it's easy, but Troy would tell you different. He's not very coordinated on his feet though.

Hence the name Oaf ya know
Brias3 replied: Honestly, I just skated over the summer at an indoor rink for the first time in well over ten years and it took me about 15 minutes to get used to, then I was fine. I started by holding onto the wall, to get my "ice legs" and then was able to venture out shortly after. FYI, I also consider myself "slower" at trying new things and I'm not particularly sport-savvy either if that gives you any relief!
Go for it, I bet you'll do just fine! I'm sure the girls will love it too. My kids all tried for the first time when they went and even Mason had a blast, with some help from Bruce.
lisar replied: For me it was hard to catch on. But I got the hang of it. We have an indoor one here in Florida where I am at.
momof2girls replied: I could never stay up on them when I was younger so Ive never tried as an adult.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Wobbly legs is what I witnessed obviously newbies to iceskating having in TN at the ice rink in Memphis. I was thinking that I might be the same way, but since it is normal to go "splat!" then I would not be quite so embarrassed. I just hope the kids do not hold onto me while they are having wobbly ice legs. We all will go a tumbling!
Thanks to all for the advice, and humor.
