I want a makeover

mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: Not a complete one...but someone to show me how to put makeup on, in a new way. I'm sorta stuck doing the same thing these days, for YEARS as a matter of fact. Which isn't much...I really don't wear much makeup, but I think it would be fun to do those smokey eyes when I go out or play around with different lip colors. I seriously have NEVER worn eyeliner in my life...but it's because I just don't know how to make it look good. And I usually just wear light glosses both day and night. Gets boring. Anyhow, anyone suggest a place to do this? Like a certain makeup counter at a department store? I like Origins makeup, but I don't really trust the sales people to be total professionals, kwim? They're sales people, not makeup artists. Bare Escentuals is okay...we had them do our makeup for a friend's wedding, but I'm not crazy about their loose minerals. Messy. I don't know where to go. I always just feel that sales people just want the sale and will tell you ANYTHING looks good, so I'm just scared to get out there! I'm a total sucker and will buy some awful colored lipstick because the sales person said it "looks amazing on you", and then hate it when I get home. blink.gif Suggestions...please. smile.gif

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I went and had a makeover done at MAC years ago. It was fun and very cool when they show you how to do everything and I think you just need to buy like $20 in products and that is very easy to do.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I was a Mary Kay consultant for a while... I took an esthetics course. Give me a picture of your face... and I'll tell you what's best for you.

In any case... generically speaking of course... you should have 3 colors for your eyes... and blend with a brush. The lighter one goes all over... from eyelashes to brow. The darkest color goes in the CREASE of your eye, and comes back on your eyelashes... kinda like a sideways V, with the point on the outside of your eye. The middle color goes jjust on your eyelid. Using a brush to blend the colors make them look more natural...as opposed to the little eyeshadow brush.

Um... take a blonde eyebrow pencil to fill in your eyebrows, it makes it look more defined...

Use a brown mascara rather than a black one, it looks softer...

I think though, from seeing past pics of you - that you're like me, and you're a "winter", so probably soft pinks and lilacs are your best colors.

Oh and your lips should probably be a natural type of color, like Shell, or for a little darker, Suede.

My3LilMonkeys replied: Rocky - can you make color suggestions for me? I never wear makeup other than a little mascara and a pink lip gloss, mainly because I have no idea what colors would work on me.

Here's a picture of my face - don't mind the weird expression:

I appreciate any help you can give!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Thanks for the tips Rocky! I have used pinks and plum colors in the past and they look okay IMO. They're always a bit too frosty or too matte, so I give up usually and just go bare! LOL! Could be how I'm applying, but I "think" I know how to blend okay...I have an art degree, so I should! LOL! rolling_smile.gif I suppose I'm looking for more of a trendy look...without sounding lame. blush.gif I love that smokey eye look, but I'm petrified of dark colors and eyeliner. I typically use black mascara...Doesn't brown show funny in the sun? And I use a light brown powder for my eyebrows, but not during the day (only in the evening when I'm going out). I want to know what colors are better for day and better for night. Do you know? I assume darker colors are better for the evening, but I see celebrities wearing really cool natural colors at night at it looks great! Maybe because they're under bright lights, but I've never been fond of dark lips. I'm just tired of wearing the exact same thing I wear in the day in the night, kwim? I think it's cool how people can change their look up by just a different eyeshadow. I have green eyes, so I've heard dark plum looks good around the eye, but do I do plum eyeshadow AND liner? I'm embarassed to ask, but does liner go under the eye or on top? I see it both ways. And my skin is fair, so I'm afraid anything plum will look too purple (which is a really a bad color for me)!

I had an Aveda salon do my makeup for my wedding and I was pretty happy with it. My skin had a good glow, but they didn't quite get it right with the eyes. I want the green to really pop! wink.gif

Okay I'm totally rambling........I should just call Extreme Makeover, that would be easier! blahblah.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Sure... I think that golden tones would look nice on you... maybe a little bit of a color in the orange sunset family... and a darker neutral tone for your lips. You have a natural "darker" complexion, so darker colors won't really emphasize anything other than make you look tired. Maybe a little bit of shimmery white under your brows could lighten up around your eyes and open them up a bit!

Rae, plum colors are fine for your complexion.

Here's what I mean about blending the colors... and it will show you about the eyeliner too.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Here's a little pic with the red where the eyeliner should go, and the blue where the darker color could go during the day, instead of the whole #2 section. For the evening, you can dab some color on your finger, and rub it in the little spot where the dot is... it highlights the angle of the brow bone and makes it "smoky".

Don't be afraid to experiment with colors, even if it's just a shade different than what you're used to.

I think that one of the most important aspects of wearing makeup though, is the foundation. If you got a good foundation, the rest is gravy. wink.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: Well I am not a make up expert..

But if you want the smokey eye and are afraid of eyeliner.. do what I do. Use Black eyeshadow.. and I wet a qtip and rub it on my lid like eyeliner.. it looks blended and really smokey. I love it..

Also they say pick one either your eyes or lips. I love my eyes so I really do them up and I go with a nude on my mouth though I do have big lips.

I use black too.. I want my eyes to pop..

My2Beauties replied: I do the same thing as Mel, I never wear black eyeliner, just black eyeshadow. I take those V-Shaped eye brushes and sweep it on under my eye under the lashes and just take my finger and sort of blend it. I'm the queen of smoky honey. I just use the same exact (I mean to the tee) techniques that Rocky described with a really pretty light gray, a darker gray and a dark black, the black goes under the eyes for the eyliner effect and in a V shape from the top of my lash line to the outer corner and up into the crease, then I use a lighter almost a white or a shimmery color under the brow bone for an added affect, I use a pinkish color lipstick, it's not really pink pink but a really light almost frosty looking pink but it's subtle not matte and from really far away it doesn't stick out at all. You'd look gorgeous with smoky eyes. I wish we lived close I'd come over and do your make-up I lvoe doing make-up for people.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Also most counters like Estee Lauder, Clinique in the department stores will schedule a makeover. Of course, they do it to try to get you to buy their stuff, but I had my makeup done before my wedding at one and it looked fantastic. It's great for new ideas and also you get to see how they do it. And you look and feel like a million bucks for the rest of the day.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Ohhhh LeaAnn, I wish you lived close too girl! I need help! Just reading your gals' replies freaks me out! My mom never wore much makeup, so I just never picked it up. I'll experiment sometimes, but then freak out, wash it off and go with what I'm familiar with. Total wimp. What's a v shaped brush? Can you get one anywhere? Like Target? You know Mel, I have used eyeshadow as a little liner before...it did look nice and soft and blended. But I only used a little, little. blush.gif Should I buy some black and gray eyeshadow and play around? I'm confused about the color thing! rolleyes.gif

You got it Kelly!...I want to feel like a million bucks! thumb.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I prefer to use a q-tip and a darker color too for getting a smokey look rather than eye liner.

Rae... get cheap stuff at the dollar store and PLAY!!!!!! Then come online and show us your face... lol we'll tell you if you look good or if you look great!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
blush.gif Oh gosh, that's a scary thought! emlaugh.gif But I'll give it a shot and let you all know what I come up with! thumb.gif Thanks

TANNER'S MOM replied: Yes just get you some stuff and play...Remember Make up is your friend..but the whole thing is to make it look like you aren't wearing any.. I am told. I dont really do that for my eyes..but the rest I do..

I love the smokey eye and the nude lips.. but I like to still draw on my lip and I think you would like great with some nude lip liner and some great gloss.. I wanna come over with LeaAnn..lol

My2Beauties replied:
OK if you guys are ever in town, I"m talking slumber party!! laugh.gif We'll do hair, make-up, pedicures, manicures LOL! rolling_smile.gif I'm re-living my childhood if you couldn't tell. I agree go buy some colors and play around and post a pic, we'll let you know, we'll be honest! Oh the V-shaped eyeshadow bruses you can buy anywhere...a lot of new eye shadows are starting to come with them, one side is more rounded and one side is V-shaped.
