I shouldn't be freaking out, right? - Plague
luvmykids wrote: A three year old died of the plague last night who lives less than a mile from us. It's all over the news about "controlling" rodents (mice & rabbits, yeah, ok, any ideas how to clear them off 15 acres?!) and dusting dogs with flea powder everytime they go out.
I'm hoping it's an isolated case but they were saying with all our damp weather it's expected to be a problem this year. One case is nothing to freak out about though, right?
Boo&BugsMom replied: Ok, don't mean to sound dumb, but what do they mean by the plague? Rabbies?
luvmykids replied: Bubonic plague.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh duh . Yikes. That is kind of scary. You don't really hear too much about that these days. Hopefully you'll have nothing to worry about.
PrairieMom replied: I wouldn't be freaking out to much, I guess I really don't know much bout it, but we have antibiotics now, they didn't durring the dark ages. We also know what causes it, so we can try to prevent it, which is something they didn't know either.
PrairieMom replied: thankyou wikipedia...
here is the site I found about it,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubonic_plague
its treated with antibiotics.
lovemy2 replied: Bubonic plague - I had no idea that was even real I would be a little freaked to be honest.....
I live near (within a 10 mile range) of a nuclear power plant - everyone within this 10 mile radius is advised to have some kind of drug (can't remember the name right now - sorry) anyway we have it in the house in case of a nuclear accident - and for Olivia's daycare and kindergarten we have to sign a consent for them to be given it in the event it happens when they are there - it is really kind of scary............the drug protects the thyroid...
MommyToAshley replied: I would be a little freaked out, I think that is only natural. It is scary when these things happen close to you. But, there is some comfort in knowing it is treatable and the doctors in the area know to keep an eye out for the symptoms. It wouldn't hurt to be familiar with the symptoms so you could seek medical attention immediately if needed.
With all that being said, try to relax as it is only one case.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Silver silver silver.....
why do you think the rich people, who were called "blue bloods" during the times of the plague, never got the plague?
Because they ate with silver utensils, and their skin got a sliver sheen to it... they looked like they had "blue blood"...they also never got the plague...
Colloidal silver. I can't help but say it again. Colloidal Silver.
3_call_me_mama replied: My thoughts exactly! it is really amazing!
luvmykids replied: Thanks guys We spent some time outside today cleaning up woodpiles and putting flea powder around some areas close to the house that I know mice like...and got some heavy duty treatments for the dogs. I feel better just knowing we've sort of protected ourselves in that way.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Monica, do you know anything more about the boy that died? Perhaps they didn't treat the symptoms or they refused medical treatment until too late? I'd be curious to know.
luvbug00 replied: BLACK DEATH? ohhh I'm morbidly facinated...hope you and the kids stay safe
luvmykids replied: They didn't treat it in time, he was feverish and a little lethargic but his parents thought it was just the flu. By the time they took him in it was too late. I'm confused on some things they've said on the news, that symptoms don't show up for three to ten days but it can be fatal within 24 hours?
I guess the biggest reason I'm concerned is of course the fleas, our two dogs roam pretty freely and I know we have tons of mice (not in the house but in our feed shed) and rabbits. We've never had any trouble with the dogs having fleas and are using extra flea stuff on them so I'm sure we're ok, I guess just the age and proximity of that little boy is a little unnerving
