I need help
Jackie012007 wrote: I am at my wits end with Carly. I know she is cutting her bottom teeth and I've tried everything to help ease the pain - but now she will not eat. ANYTHING. It started with me trying to give her dinner last night - she would just turn her head and scream if I persisted. She will drink but only a little at a time. I even tried giving her a frozen bagel thinking it would help and it would be nourishment but she wouldn't touch it. It's almost 4pm here and she has not eaten ANYTHING yet - I've tried all day. I've offered her everything I have that she likes. She just turned her head and screamed. I'm scared she is going to starve - should I take her to the ER? I feel like the worst mother in the whole world
Jamison'smama replied: Poor baby. First, she won't starve, especially in one day. You are doing all the right stuff. Have you tried the Hylands Teething Tablets? That seemed to work best with my kids. Frozen washclothes, frozen bananas, lots of liquid. Just keep asking, she will eat or drink enough. Have you called her doctor for advice?
Mommy2Isabella replied: Get some pediasure< great for kiddies that wont eat
Jackie012007 replied: Her ped is closed on friday (of course) . I have tried evrything - we were giving her infant motrin but she still just cries and cries. We did the washcloth and she liked it - never tried a banana! It's weird because it wasn't nearly this bad when she cut her first teeth, and she cut 4 at the same time. These are her bottom teeth, the ones on either side of the 2 front. Are these worse than others or something?
Calimama replied: I think she's old enough that if she was really really hungry, she'd take the food. I'd keep offering it though. Maybe try some popsicle's or something frozen? Not at all nutritious but maybe the cold would numb the pain so she can eat. Poor thing, teething is the worst. I hope she's feeling better soon.
3xsthefun replied: Poor girl! I agree with what the other ladies have said.
boyohboyohboy replied: jackie they make these mesh feeding bags that come on like a spoon handle, you can get them at toys r us or at rite aide or even target... you can put frozen fruit in them and ice cubes and she can suck on them and it will help numb her gums. they worked with jake we used the hyland teething tabs and got no results, but i know some do. also you can piggy back the tylenol and the motrin, and you must have a dr on call at your ped office, if it helps you to feel better just call them anyway! how old is carly now? pediasure cant be given to a child under one. poor girl!
moped replied: I promise she won't starve. All you can do is keeping offering and she will eventually.....what about popcicles
mckayleesmom replied: Mckaylee would be like that for about 2 weeks off and on.....I just made sure she drank plenty of liquids and milk.....That was about all I could do.
Teesa®© replied: What about soup? Liquid food, can't go wrong... unless she doesn't like soup, lol.
A&A'smommy replied: awww no she wont starve I promise!!! She will eat when she gets hungry just keep offering. As long as she is drinking she will be fine.. have you tried hyland teething tablets? those worked wonders for my little one.. doesn't mean she will eat though it probably hurts her mouth to eat.
Jackie012007 replied: thanks for all the suggestions! I just went out and bought one of those mesh tasting thingies and some frozen fruit - we'll try that tomorrow.
We used to use the Hylands tabs but they don't seem to work anymore!! Carl did get her to eat a frozen (precooked) chicken nugget though! Gross, but hey I'm just glad she ate something!!!
stella6979 replied: We used frozen peas when Avery was teething and she loved them. They're small enough to not choke on and they can push them back to their molars which I'm sure feels real good. Teething is definitely the pits!!
colinandtracy replied: Frozen peas really, I would have thought that they might joke, all of our friends have actually gotten by with popsicles (not real nutritious) but once they numb the gums then you can usually get them to eat something a little better for them. Our friends ped said to them "remember they drank milk for how long and that filled them up" so basically he said keep giving them fluids and keep them hydrated. Nothing worse than not being able to ease someone's pain, keep a stiff upper lip, hubby had a terrible time when she had her 1st cold, he felt so bad that she was so young and we couldnt do anything for her except to let the cold take it's course. But it's an awful feeling when you are helpless. Things will get better....
boyohboyohboy replied: jackie, how did u make out with the mess bags? we used water melon in them with jake, messy but he loved it.
colinandtracy replied: Sorry all, i meant to say CHOKE not JOKE....I didnt have my coffee and i was feeding her as well..... Sorry
Jackie012007 replied: they are FANTASTIC!! I filled one with frozen raspberries and she LOVES IT!!! She has been hanging out with it sticking out of her mouth all morning! She was funny at first, like "what the heck is this, and you want me to put it in MY MOUTH?!" but once she figured out that it felt AND tasted good, she was hooked! Thank you so much for the suggestion!
As for me, I will have a relaxing night and a long sleep-in tomorrow because Carly is going to grandma's house tonight!! Woohoo!! I get to regain my sanity!
stella6979 replied: Nah, they're about the same size as cherrios and as soon as they enter the mouth, they soften right up. Glad to hear you got some rest Jackie!
austins mom replied: A lady at work was telling me to use liquid benadryl on a qtip. it doesnt numb the gums but helps with the pain.
Jackie012007 replied: you know, my friend Erika just told me that too! Rubbing kids Benadryl on the gums make them feel better... maybe I will try it.
