I made a stupid purchase
coasterqueen wrote: I made a really stupid purchase I get my eyebrows waxed every 2 weeks and it's really cheap at $10 every 2 weeks. I use my "lunch money" to get them done, lol. The esthetician and I have gotten pretty close, we talk about all kinds of personal things, since we've seen each other every 2 weeks for about a year now. Well, today I was telling her how I was dreading turning 30 this year, that my face is really aging, and that I have the worst dry skin on my face. The dry skin is so bad if I tough my face it flakes all over the place and after my make-up is on it looks even worse. Soo....she mentioned a cream and cleanser I should try that would really help. She never recommends anything and so I don't think she was pushing anything on me. Well, stupid me said "ok, I'll buy them" WITHOUT looking at the price tag! I go to pay and with my wax the bill was $104 I just signed the receipt and left
DH met me for lunch and asked me what I had in the little red bag I was carrying and I was about in tears. He made me feel like a huge donkey butt about it too!
I really feel awful because we can't afford this. Dh's comment was "well, I guess you can tell Kylie when we get home that she's not getting a swing set this year" Which is making me feel even more awful because we have been trying to save for a swing set for her and a purchase like this is just REALLY STUPID OF ME!
How do I go back in there and say "uh, I can't afford this, I need to return it" ???????? This salon is one of the "BEST" in our town and very pricey/very UPSCALE. The only reason I go there is because their wax is fairly cheap and the only place downtown by my work so I can get them done at lunch.
What would you do if you already made such a stupid mistake as I have???? It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't ever gonna see this woman again, but I will be. I am sooo embarrassed and feel like such a donkey butt that I just want to go eat the whole jar of peanut m&m's sitting in our office
jen replied: OMG we are soooooooooo much a like in this way!!! i would dread going back and returning it. (((HUGS))) but you will feel much better if you do , really!! This is my suggestion and HONESTLY what I would do..........I would just go in there and say I really need to return this, I found something else I want to try first that my dermatologist prescribed that doesn't cost so much. Trust me if you think about this way, those people still probably make 30k to possibly 45k a year and they are not most likely in the budget of buying $90+ face cream, KWIM?? And you are kind of MAKING IT not an insult to their marketed product but DOCTORS ORDERS! LOL They will understand. May the Beauty Salon Force be with you!!!!
Kaitlin'smom replied: oh hon I am so sorry, but I would take it back. that is way to pricy for me also. I have the dry skin issues and am finally getting a hold on it, and my remity is soooo much cheeper! If they ask why your returning it just tell them either you changed your mind or you simply cant afford it right now. I did something similar a few years ago not that pricy but expensive enough and it did not even work for me.
I hate byers remores guess that why i dont really buy much self much.
Jamison'smama replied: Okay, will you have to take it back to the actual esthetician or is there a separate place where you make purchases and check out?
If you don't have to take it directly to her then you can make up just about anything. If it is directly to her you can just be honest and say--I know you never make suggestions to me so I wanted to get the item when you did suggest it but I did not look at the price--
I tell my OVER PRICED fancy-pants-salon hair stylist that I can't really get my hair colored there as often because it is too expensive--she knows I started coloring at home--she has 2 kids--she gets it and I imagine if you told your esthetician she would too. My stylist knows that I spent a lot more on myself before Jamison---now, I have to make sacrifices. Just remind her that you were thinking with your "before Kylie" brain.
I also HATE returning things ---if it were me, I would probably make my DH do it
jen replied: OH YES! Have DH return it!!! That is a great idea!!!!!! Just have him stroll in there and say I need to return this, it isn't working for me! HaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Just leave it at that!! It isn't working for him, he said so himself in not so many words! Trust me My DH wouldn't be too thrilled about going in a Salon to do ANYTHING but return something that costs that much money!!!
***Oh and since you just had them waxed, they will have almost 2 more weeks to totally forget about it anyway!
coasterqueen replied: LOL. I tried BEGGING Dh to take it back. I even said I would ahem be nice to him when I get home if he would do it. That didn't work!
I would have to return it to a cashier, but I'm not for sure if they would have to tell her I'm returning it because of commission sales? Not sure if she even gets that, not sure how it works. I thought about returning it to the other salon that is part of this company, but is clear cross town , not sure if I could do that or not.
I think the problem would be when I go see her in 2 weeks and my dry skin is still dry, or even if it's not and she asks me how the product is, then I will either have to tell her the truth then or lie So I think I'm just going to suck in my pride and return it tomorrow. DH did say I could make some excuse like he got mad and said it was too expensive Not sure what I'll say. She's a pretty STRONG single woman, who believes in taking care of herself, etc, etc and she doesn't have kids. We try not to talk about kids becuz she doesn't tend to understand IYKWIM? LOL. She's very nice though.
Oh well, I'll let you know how it goes
coasterqueen replied: LOL I did try to get him to return it, didn't work.
I don't think Paula would forget this in 2 weeks I'll just have to be honest with her
kimberley replied: i have been there done that! lol i have finally learned to ask the price beforehand now but it took a lot of $100 stupid purchases to get it through my thick skull. i own a belt that cost $130 and it broke in a month and they wouldn't take it back i say bring it back and just be honest and tell her it's too pricy for you or anybody for that matter!!
jen replied: I guess honesty is the BEST policy! I just always think of every other way first! he he he! that is a lot of money! Tell them you are just going to save up and get a whole new face that it won't be that much more!!!!!!!! just kidding!!! I would just say you would rather see your dermatologist first before making an investment of a facial regimen!! HOW IS THAT!!?:?!!
coasterqueen replied: LOL! Believe me I have been thinking of every possible line since I bought it at noon! I don't know why I get myself in these messes. I should have just said no! When they teach kids to say no to drugs and alcohol and sex in schools, there should also be a class for "saying no to buying expensive things".
jen replied: I totally agree about the HOW TO SAY NO TO SPLURGING PROGRAM!!! lol DH would definitely have me signed up!!!
jem0622 replied: Sweetie...I think we've all done it. And trust me I know about budget. Way too much. When we buckle down for this nasty storm of ours I am going to have to be so so strict and penny pinching. And I need to come up with a plan soon for all of this. Oy.
Take it back. Don't worry about someone judging you over that. Just say that you had an allergic reaction to it or that you checked with your Dr. and he advised you not to use it.
The things we do for beauty!

aspenblue1 replied: I have done that before. ITA with taking it back.
amynicole21 replied: Honestly, I'm sure they won't even think twice about you returning it. I often sit and think up elaborate excuses for things that are wasted on people that don't even care!!! Just walk up to the counter and say "I'd like to return this please." If your friend is there, tell her you had second thoughts after buying it because of the price - end of story. Don't try to explain too much or you'll end up looking like a doof
My friend fell in love with a set of sheets at a fancy department store... they were so soft and nice. He took them up to the counter and they were $400!!! He was too embarassed at that point to say no, so he bought them. Luckily, he is single and has money to spend, but that is still crazy
A&A'smommy replied: ugh you poor thing i would be upset too!!!!! ((((HUGS)))) and i agree with amynicole!!!! Try not to be so hard on yourself!!!! And i dont think its anyone elses business why your return it!!!
Beccas_mom replied: I have so been there only with me it is general a little more stupid! totally understand! Good Luck Returning it. Honestly I would tell the truth. Let us know how it goes
jcc64 replied: ITA with Amy. I realize you see this person on a regular basis, but she obviously didn't have a problem putting you in an awkward position by pushing VERY overpriced skin care products on you. It's not important or her business why you're returning it, it's your perogative as a customer. I will undoubtedly get in trouble with someone for saying this, but here I go anyway. Upscale beauty products targeted at women are a HUGE scam. It is no coincidence that they occupy the space closest to the door of most dept stores. It's because the profit margin is insane. Take away the fancy packaging and the hype, and you could get the exact same thing in a supermarket or a drugstore for under $15.
Kaitlin'smom replied: the funny thing is I sooo agree and most of the time the so called cheep stuff works better! My sister works in a salon (not an upscale one) but the prices are horribe $18 for a small thing of shampoo , and the same for the conditner glad she was getting a huge discount, however I used them and they were terrible my heair was so dry (it was a mostrizing product) that I stopped using them went out and spent $2 on both shampoo and conditner and my hair feels great!
coasterqueen replied: I agree too. It's funny becuz a co-worker of mine and I were talking about my purchase this morning, lol, and we started talking about Biolage shampoo. We both love that stuff, but it is expensive, and I can't afford it most times. So I have been buying Suave's version of Biolage and it works just as well And MUCH MUCH cheaper.
I would normally never buy things like that on my own, I just seemed to get roped in sometimes
MommyToAshley replied:
I LOVE Biolage too! We can get it in the grocery store here and it is a lot cheaper than buying it in the salon.
I read your update first before this post, glad you feel better and took everything back. What a relief. And, you shouldn't feel bad about returning it, I am sure it happens all the time.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I'm in the *business* of selling upscale high-priced cosmetics and such...and I agree with you. That's why with Mary Kay Cosmetics, it's all about helping the owman, bnot about the money...which is why EVERYTHING is totally GUARANTEED and RETURNABLE AT ANY TIME...which is the one thing that I always make sure all my customers konw...
Of course there are selling tactics to every saleperson's products, but I would NEVER pressure someone to buy Mary Kay from me...AND there is a plna that I do - not sure if all other consultants do this too -0 but if yo uhost a Mary Kay party, you get a percentage of sales FREE. AND a hostess gift...and I like to be generousm, so any purchase over 25$, you get 5$ of stuff free..no strings... but that's my practice. Those cosmetics work for me, they don't work for everyone, and I can respect that - and I agree that the profit margin ISD insane - I get 50% profit!!!!!!!
But..ot every product is for everyone...and while I do use some MK stuff (basically the cleaser, moisturizer and foundation), most of my makeup is from the dollar store. Shhhhh!!!
