I have a question - about milk
A&A'smommy wrote: Okay I was told to start milk at 12 months I'm STILL weaning Alyssa from a bottle (which is hard since she is sick) we are now on 4.5 ounces of formula and its only at night . But I was wondering how much and what time of day would be best to start milk (whole milk, right?) anyway I'm really nervous because I want her to like it and she is SOO picky! Oh and one more thing when would it be okay to give her like scrambled eggs?
5littleladies replied: If you are worried about her liking it you could start by mixing it with formula and gradually decrease the amlount of formula until it is straight milk. My kids never had a problem with swiching to milk but then again at that age they would eat practically anything. As for the eggs, I always started giving my kids eggs at around a year. I think that is when it is officially safe for them to have the egg white. So I'd say go ahead. Good luck!
gr33n3y3z replied: when we started the kids on milk the Ped. told us to mix it 50/50 with formula, breast milk and over a weeks time they would be drinking all milk when to start them I did it in the am
DansMom replied: If you see any kind of negative reaction, like hives or bad skin or diarrhea/vomiting, then don't give any more milk (allergy). If she doesn't react negatively, I would gradually increase mixed with the formula.
As far as eggs go, same thing---it's fine to introduce, but watch for sensitivity like hives (or worse, vomiting/diarrhea). If she has a reaction, wait six months before you try again.
amynicole21 replied: Yep, what they said I mixed it 75/25, then 50/50, then 25/75 until it was all milk. She probably would have been fine had I just switched it out alltogether, but I didn't want to chance her either refusing it or having stomach issues.
kit_kats_mom replied: Gosh Jessie-Ann! You mean she's 12 mos and what, 3 or 4 days old, and you've not started giving her milk yet? OMG, the Horror.
LOL I'm totally being sarchastic hun Really, the ages are just guidelines. Just keep working on weaning her from the bottle and try introducing watered down milk first. 16 mos would be fine to introduce milk or some people, like us, never do. I tried and K won't do more than take 1-2 sips.
Don't stress yourself out.
A&A'smommy replied: thanks everyone you guys have been TOTALLY helpful LOL Cary thanks I will try now to! I had to quite TRYING so hard to get her to eat food the poor kid will not eat unless its that nasty baby food (well actually some of it is pretty good) its step 3 but she wont eat that if it has chunks in it
Kaitlin'smom replied: everyone has given good advice, its really a guide line on when to start, just try it when your ready and dont fret if she does not like it right away, kaitlin did not like it at fisrt after she went to complete milk but after a few times she was okay with it. and as far as the eggs, if you dont have any family history with allergies its fine to try, but dont worry if she wont eat them, kaitlin will only eat her uncles eggs
3xsthefun replied: I started mixing formula with milk for Maegan last month. She was drinking whole milk by it self by the end of the month. She really did not have any problems with it. I'm now finishing off her last can of forumla. She gets 1 or 2 bottles of forumla now. One in the morning and night before bed. Sometimes she just gets 1 before bed.
I'm also trying wean Maegan off the bottle. She does "ok" with sippy cups but not real good. LOL she likes her bottle better.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Maddie LOVES her milk! She never had a problem switching over. I mixed the first bottle with formula (50/50) and after that just gave her whole milk. Good Luck!
mummy2girls replied: With jenna i gradually added the milk. 1 ounce of whole milk to rest formula and then 3 days later upped it to 2 ounces milk to formula. The reason why i gradually did it this way is because jenna constipated herself pretty badly so i had to do it slowly. Now she loves her milk. she drinks a 4L jug of milk in 3 days...LOL. she dfoesnt like jiuce. just milk and water..LOL.
You can try eggs. But just a little and see what her reaction is.
Josie83 replied: Sorry I only just saw this post Jessica, it sounds like you've had some pretty good advice. I'd say go ahead with both and good luck! xx
A&A'smommy replied: ya'll are so great! I tried ya'lls advice yesterday told dh what I was doing and he still gave her a huge cup of straight milk He can be SUCH an idiot sometimes!!! Anyway she liked it and she didn't have any kinds of reactions so I guess we are drinking milk now
mummy2girls replied: just keep an eye out for her not to constipate. some kids are sensitive..jenna was. But some kids take to it just fine...
Alice replied: Anytime you're trying something new, I would try for the morning. That way, worst case scenario: if they do have a reaction, at least you're both awake to see it and deal with it.
I'm glad the milk went OK. It's really one of the very few healthy things my 4 year old will take: Chocolate milk is our lifesaver!!
I think that, in general, any time after 12 months is safe for most foods (aside from those with choking hazards of course) But that doesn't mean that any child has to be comfortable with them all as of then; it just means you have more freedom to start experimenting. If something doesn't work, relax and wait2 weeks before you try it again.
Good luck!
