I am so so scared for my baby that - I can't even look @ him w/o crying...

Boys r us wrote: He had a fever yesterday that was pretty high, so I took him into the doctor. The doctor diagnosed him as having ANOTHER ear infection. Well, he then noticed that SOMEHOW we missed B's 2 yr check up. So they scheduled one for this morning @ 9. No big deal. We went in and they had Braedon pee in a cup..which he loved by the way..Then it was off to the lab to drop off his urine sample and get his finger poked. He was such a big boy, he didn't even make a noise, much less cry when he got stuck. Then she printed off the results fro the blood and the urine, we took the back to the dr's office and she looked at them and got a really concerned look on her face. I was just like SPEAK ALREADY WOMAN! So, then she said she was quite concerned with his lab results, as he showed a high level of protein in his urine. She went on to tell me that if his kidney's were functioning properly, that there should not have been any in his urine. Okay, so I start freaking out..and then she sort of did the whole step backwards and tried to reassure me that it may be nothing, but we had to test him further. So she gave me a specimen cup to bring home with me and collect a early morning specimen and drop it off at the lab.

Okay, so that shook me up a little bit and then when I looked online at the causes behind protein in the urine, I totally and completely lost it.

Normally, there should be no protein detected in the urine. The presence of protein may indicate:

kidney disease

kidney injury

macroglobulinemia. This is a serious disease of the plasma causing bleeding tendencies, weight loss, blurred vision, and disease of the lymph nodes.

multiple myeloma, or a tumor in the bone marrow

preeclampsia of pregnancy

congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart does not pump enough blood to the body tissues

severe muscle exertion

renal vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot in the vein carrying blood away from the kidney

bladder tumor, including bladder cancer

inflammation of the urethra or prostate gland

amyloidosis, a disease in which starch-like substances deposit in the tissues and organs of the body

I don't even know what to think...except I can't imagine anything being wrong with my little boy! I'm so upset, I haven't been able to do anything today except cry and worry!

texasp3 replied: Oh gosh, Nichole, that IS upsetting! Oh I hope it was just a wonky lab result and that better follow-up testing shows less to be concerned about.

By the way, my kidneys took a severe beating when I was little - I had an exotic tropical disease - and I'm just fine today with two healthy kids of my own.

I won't even bother to tell you to try not to worry before they know more... if I were in your shoes, I know I'd be a complete and total basket case. So just some big hugs and plenty of P&PTs from me! grouphug.gif

mckayleesmom replied: I know its hard not to worry,,,but try not to until you know anything for sure. You don't want to scare your babies and get yourself into a panic. I can't imagine what you are going through...pm me if you need to talk...Im annebri99@yahoo

~Roo'sMama~ replied: (((Hugs))) I hope it's nothing serious! How long will you have to wait to know if anything's wrong? You and Braedon are in my prayers! grouphug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: OH Nichole I can't amagin how scare you must be right now (((((BIG HUGS))))) I wish I could say more! Let us know what they say as soon as you can!!!

momof2girls replied: I would be scared too but try not to freak out until there is reason too, I know that is not easy.
can't this happen with a bladder infection? I thought it could.... ask your Dr and that is cured with antibiotics of course...

let us know what happens

alice&arik replied: Oh wow!! I am sure everything will be fine. I can't imagine how scared you must be.

Do they always do urine tests at the 2 year checkup? Arik never had his 2 year checkup and now I am nervous too. unsure.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: I know that fear all too well. I will be sending my thoughts your way and hopefully the lab results were wrong (like K's were) or it is something minor.

ETA: BTW, I think that protein spilling into the urine can also be a signal of the kidneys not working properly. If that's the case, I hope it's just a kidney infection.

paradisemommy replied: keeping brae and you in my prayers but try not to worry too much..i have a *minor* problem with my pregnancy and so i went online to look up stuff and reading it all was making me go beserk cause it was ALL bad..big hugs..and keep us posted!! grouphug.gif grouphug.gif

ediep replied: ((((((HUGS))))))) Nichole!!!! keeping you and Brae in my thoughts and prayers!! Good luck with the tests!

Kirstenmumof3 replied: grouphug.gif Try not to worry until the next results come back! I'm sure everything will be fine. When I was pregnant with Claudia I had protein in my urine and they said that I just had a bladder infection. I was put on a course of antibiotics and was fine. grouphug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: grouphug.gif Nichole I will be keeping you and Brae in my prayers. That is terribly scary. I remember when Cary went thru this with K. sad.gif Hang in there sweetie and please let us know as soon as you hear something. I have a feeling I won't sleep tonight. sad.gif I just feel so sick.

I was wondering where you were today. grouphug.gif I wish I was there to give you a hug IRL.

iluvmysweetiepies replied: grouphug.gif You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!! Let us know when you hear anything sad.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: (((BIG HUGS)))

Try not to worry Vig (loveydad) posted soemthing for you. I bet its nothing. Oh and stop looking on the internet until you know it can drive you batty

gr33n3y3z replied: Aww Nichole I'm so sorry to hear that about Braedon maybe its not as bad as everyone thinks and it is just an infection.
Keeping Braedon in my prayers and Big hugs to you.

mom21kid2dogs replied: Oh, how frightening! Here's hoping it's just a fluke or infection!!

Boys r us replied: Thank you ALL for being so supportive! I realize I probably sounded silly getting so upset over this, it's just that I've watched 2 very close family members go through hell and live right on the edge of death due to kidney failure..so this just has hit way too close to home! For right now, I'm just going to program in my head that this was caused by fever(thanx Vig) and wait until I hear the results from the 24 hour thing!

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Silly????? I hardly think so!!! When it comes to our children and their health there are no dumb questions and nonsense worrying. grouphug.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Nicole, I just wanted to elaborate a bit on my prior post now that Lauren is asleep and I have two hands to type with. wink.gif

K was small for her age at 1 yr and so the ped started doing all sorts of tests to try to make sure that it was not a health issue. One of her blood results came back with elevated cholestoral. (sp?) In a baby, that can be a sign of all sorts of problems. Of course I looked it up online and was sure that my baby was dying. The redrew blood for testing and I spent a week losing my mind and receiving tons of support from the ladies on this board. We went to a specialist every day during that week and it was so stressful. Turns out it was either a lab error or a wild fluke because she's never had any other problems.

Anyway, I know your fear all too well and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Hugs.

coasterqueen replied: Nichole,

((HUGS)) I hope everything is ok with Brae and I will be keeping you all in my thoughts. It's normal for us to worry and think the worst, we are moms wink.gif.

I remember when Kylie was just like 3 months old and had a really really high fever and was VERY lathargic and the doc told us to take her to the emergency room. THey did all sorts of tests on her that were absolutely horrible and painful for her. They told us she had some kind of kidney failure at first. MANY hours later after many other tests they told us it was just a urinary tract infection but they were very concerned because of her age. Well then we went to the doctor's office the next day and had us do some more tests and they came back fine. They had us worried for nothing. I was a nervous wreck and that was just for two days.

Kaitlin'smom replied: no your not being silly, it your kid and until you know what the problem is, like fulty lab results you will worry, its NORMAL. Sending you lots of PP&T and great big hugs

jcc64 replied: Nichole- I'm sorry you and your ds are going through this. As many others have said, drs have a tendency to send us into a tailspin with their testing and speculating, and then we have to tear the wound open a little more by "disease shopping" on the internet. I've had my kids and myself with all kinds of cancers and diseases until the dust settled and we realized it was something minor and treatable. I think my mom spills protein( and blood) in her urine from time to time, and after much anxiety and testing, it turned out to be something harmless and peculiar to her physiology. I think it is significant that he is fighting an infection elsewhere in his body. As difficult as it is, try to stay calm and remember he is a healthy, happy little boy who prior to this showed no signs of an underlying serious illness.
We'll be thinking of you.

My2Beauties replied: Nichole I just saw this and I'm sorry I couldn't be there at that moment to post but I hope that your little Brae is doing ok, I read Vig's post first and I agree with him, I've heard of this happening! Please keep us updated and don't feel silly for being scared, it's completely understandable and we do not think you are silly at all! P&PT's coming your way hon!!!

DansMom replied: Oh, that would freak me out too. I've done my share of disease shopping on the internet lately, and it can really be scary with a lot of worst-case scenarios. I hope it turns out to be something easy to deal with. Post as soon as you can, and we'll all be hoping for good news. grouphug.gif

elvisfan replied: I am sure I would freak out too! I know when my ds2 had a high fever they did some blood work and his sugar was sky high! I freaked but the tested him later and he was fine. I hope everything goes well!

MommyToAshley replied: Nicole, so sorry I missed this post yesterday. How are you doing today? I can only imagine how scared you must be. grouphug.gif I know that waiting for the test results, and imagining all the things it could be, is sooo hard. But, you have to remember that Brae has been completely healthy up until this point, so I am betting that it has to do with his fever or fighting an infection.

Please keep us posted on how you and Brae are doing, and let us know when you get the test results. I will be thinking of you, and keeping Brae in my prayers. grouphug.gif

kimberley replied: omg that is scary. but like the others said, *try* not to get too far ahead of yourself and diagnose something that is probably worse than what it is (like i should talk rolleyes.gif ). i am sure Vig is onto something with the fever making the protein present. p&pt your way. keep us updated.

loveydad replied: No problem!

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I'm so sorry that I missed this post. I hope that everything is okay. I know that when I had my kidney infection while pg with Jade they found protein in my urine. Not anything as bad as kidney disease and all it took was some antibiotics to clear it up. The internet is so bad about pulling up all sorts of bad things. I have been known to do this as well. Here are some P&PTs for you.

Josie83 replied: Nic I'm sorry this is so late, but I really hope that everyhting is okay with Braedon - I'm sure that ti is, but of course you're going to worry. Don't you dare apologise for being worrie,d its covmpletely understandable! Thinking of you xx
