I HATE gnats. - how to get rid of them?

DillsMommy wrote: Has anyone had a problem with gnats or fruit flys? Just over the last day or two, we've had them in the kitchen. I've tried everything, scrubbing the whole kitchen, cleaned out my fridge, I even poured draino down the drain (i read somewhere that they breed in drains) puke.gifI'm so grossed out and I dont know how to get rid of them. My house isn't dirty, I swear, I don't know where they are coming from and they are so annoying! Anyone had this problem before? how did you get rid of them?

J-rod replied: we had them and stephy used aple cider vinager or something like that and dish soap.

2:1 ratio with the vinager to soap.

worked amazing.

my mom used to use beer to get them....it works too...i just dont like committing alcohol abuse. rolling_smile.gif

pur bleech down the drain...works better than draino.... older houses get them worse. our house is older and thats how we got them....a couple days later all gone.

DillsMommy replied: Thanks, I'll have to try that. I actually just poured bleech down the drain so I hope it works.

J-rod replied: use that vinager/soap mix...

it works great!! i was totally surprised.

PrairieMom replied: Every october they invade us. dry.gif I set traps for them. I put some yeast, (like for baking bread) in a cereal bowl, Like 2 or 3 Tbs. Then I add about 1/4 C apple cider vinegar. I cover it very tightly with saran wrap (tape it on the bottom to keep it secure) and poke a few small holes in it with a fork.

They are attracted to the smell and will climb in there and can't get out again. They have really short life spans, but it still takes us about a week before they are all gone.

PrairieMom replied:
that never works for us. I use boiling water and bleach both. dry.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Yeah they also breed in your plants. If you have some around your plants, don't water them for a while... it will kill the eggs and larvae. I think it takes 10 days, so don't water them for about 2 weeks

Boo&BugsMom replied: I never knew they come up from the drains. We have always had an issue with them since we bought the house. I've noticed lately they haven't been so bad with the cold weather though. I'll have to pour some bleach down the drain to see if that takes care of them. I do spray my plants with bug spray, but I notice they like to hang around them. I have 4 real plants.

gr33n3y3z replied: Get a cheap bottle of sweet wine dump or drink a glass of it LOL

They will enter the bottle and not come out bc they get drunk and fall in there wink.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
rolling_smile.gif Gnats getting drunk? I have a crazy picture in my head of the gnats having a party in there. laugh.gif Never thought to try that!

gr33n3y3z replied:
Oh it works great just put the bottle on the counter top near the sink
yeah they party to lol

J-rod replied:
my mom did that with bear....made my brother mad when he came home for a weekend cause she used his beer. rolling_smile.gif
