How would you like to strap your kids - with this mess?
redchief wrote: There's a small town in southwestern NJ, Gloucester County where a company by the name of Shieldalloy has been making alloy metals for almost 20 years. A bi-product of their smelting process yields low-level radioactive material. They've been storing the radioactive waste on site and now have a 50,000 ton pile of the stuff. Now they want to close the plant and leave the waste, burying it there instead of moving it to a toxic waste facility to be properly disposed of. If the government says, "No," it's likely the company will simply declare bankruptcy and strap the taxpayers with it anyway.
Here's the editorial from the local newspaper.
CantWait replied: You can imagine what I'm thinking right now.
mom2my2cuties replied: You would think there would be a way to force the company to remove the pile. ...
jcc64 replied: Kind of sounds like General Electric and the Hudson River. They basically destroyed an entire eco-system for generations by dumping PCBs into the river, were mandated by the gov't to dredge the river YEARS ago to remove them, and have stalled and dragged their feet ever since, claiming it's too much of a hardship for them. Makes me want to puke.
TheOaf66 replied: figures, seems to be the cheap and easy way out of it
gr33n3y3z replied: it happends all over the place and thats the sad part
kimberley replied: that is infuriating!
Crystalina replied: My sis' FIL works for them and we have one right down the road. Hmm, I wonder where it all came from. Is it from all their other plants or just that one inparticular? The plant we have here is pretty big but there are no piles of anything in our area.
Either way, It's a not right.
holley79 replied: I would be majorily
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG that's terrible! The company should be held responsible for cleaning it up!
MoonMama replied: That is horrible! I hate how all these companies seem to have such easy outs!

That's b/c the gov't creates an environment where that is a possibility. When environmental safeguards put in place by previous administrations are perpetually eroded or chipped away at by pro-business politicians, this is what happens. Sorry to say we all have a hand in this kind of thing by electing people who have no regard for our planet or our children.
My2Beauties replied: That p's me off. Companies have no regard for the environment whatsoever and our current presidents policies towards the environment suck as it is, so sadly it is so that these companies get away with damaging our earth and polluting our airways! OK don't get me started!
redchief replied: This is Shieldalloy's website. Apparently they've owned the property for more than 40 years, and are responsible for the alluded to Superfund materials that were on site before. This company is HUGE (not quite as big as General Electric, but big nonetheless). They have posted their "decommissioning project" for their Newfiled operations as if they're being upright and generous.
Jeanne, for this rare occasion, I agree with you on a political position. But then I've never claimed to be a great Republican, have I? On the environment, I'm fairly solidly with the Dems. We just gotta stop trashin' the planet. Government is to blame for allowing these companies to commit environmental crimes against humanity all in the name of the bottom line. It has to stop.
luvmykids replied: Sickening.

Crystalina replied: Everyone gets upset over this kind of stuff (me included) but then how many people who complain about this type of thing get into their SUVs and drive from place to place (me not included). This is really no differant except this is one company blatently being rude to our enviroment. They are an easy target because it is something tangible that we can see and it's there now. People who drive those darn SUVs are doing the same thing, they are just doing it slower and quieter.
jcc64 replied: It makes my day when Ed agrees with me!
