How often do you change diapers?

RayaJoysmommy wrote: I am going crazy I think. Raya has a diaper rash I can't get rid of. I don't even know for sure what started it. I change her about every 3 hours sometimes 4 hours. (she is 5mo almost) At first I thought maybe the new diapers but we got rid of them 3 days ago. Then I thought a size too small but we fixed that 3 days ago. I have used Vaseline, Bourdeaux Butt Paste, Johnson&Johnsons 3in1. My MIL bought Johnson&Johnsons cornstartch but it has fragrance in it so I'm afraid to use it.

She had Thrush, I took her to the doctor and he gave me Nyastatin (sp) but the diaper rash came before the meds. I didn't have thrush and was told that eating yogurt might help keep me from getting it. I started eating yogurt the same day the rash showed up. (Raya is almost entirely bf) I had not eaten yogurt while I was pg or while I have been bfing. So I stopped eating yogurt yesterday I haven't had any for 2 days and still the rash. The thrush in her mouth is gone. I gave her a bath and that just seemed to make her unhappy and she acts like the rash itches. Could this be the thrush too?

I don't know what to do anymore it just seems to spread and get worse everyday. Am I not changing her often enough?

MomToMany replied: I change my girls every hour to hour & a half, or whenever they pee or poop. Can't stand going longer than that!

JAYMESMOM replied: When Jayme was younger I changed her every 2-3 hours. Now that she is older it is a little more spread out.

She has had reactions to different diapers and it takes almost a week or two to clear up completely. It always gets worse before it gets better.

I would suggest Balmex and/or antibiotic cream.

I am not sure if thrush can spread to her bottom but I would call the doctor and double check.

stanleygirl replied: I would call the Dr, just to be on the safe side, but that does seem a little long to go between changings. I personally change DS about every 3 hours.
And using too many diff types of product may not be best either bc it would be hard to tell what is helping, or possibly making it even worse kwim?

ediep replied: well we are working on potty training since Jason is 2 1/2, but when it comes to diaper rash....Triple paste or regular desitin are my favorites. They seem to clear up diaper rash overnight.

amynicole21 replied: I would call the doc because he may be able to give you more info on the thrush. I'm wondering if it could be a yeast infection - or is that another word for thrush?? I've never dealt with either (knock wood!) Also, you might want to let her go diaperless for several hours each day... sitting on a lap pad or cloth diaper for easy clean-up. Fresh air is a great diaper rash cure! Good luck.

kit_kats_mom replied: could be a yeast diaper rash. If it is a regular diaper rash I love Dr smiths ointment. they usually have it behind the counter at the pharmacy but it's not a perscription. I've seen it clear up redness by the next diaper change

here are some links to diaper rash pics & tips on treating & avoiding it
beware-some of these are medical sites & can be pretty graphic,

coasterqueen replied: Try clomitrozole (or is it clotrimizole?) OTC for it and see if it goes away after a day or two. If it does, it was a yeast (thrush) diaper rash.

Megan gets acidic diaper rashes from her reflux and Balmex is the only cream that has worked. I've tried many many different types and it was the only one that worked. It was recommended to me on a breastfeeding board.

HTH! BTW, using nystatin (which has sugar components in it) only feeds the yeast, doesn't really get rid of it. Doctors just don't seem to understand the concept of thrush/yeast rashes. rolleyes.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: If its not gone yet - and this might sound really funny.... but try some Mary Kay Emollient Cream. The pink beeswax stuff..... it`s really great to clear up baby`s butt when really nothing else works - and it`s a bit expensive, but less expensive than some medicated butt creams for babies.

And, you can use it on yourself to smooth your hands, elbows, knees, feet.... and it also works as a bubble bath.

When I`m really stuck on a particular rash and it just won`t go away..... that stuff clears it right upĀ. No joke. blush.gif

Jamison'smama replied:
That's exactly what we use--Dr. recommends is for yeast (thrush) and it certainly spreads to the diaper area. Jamison was queen of the yeast---never figured out why but a couple of treaments and it was gone. I also used it on myself and in her mouth so it is an all in one and I ALWAYS keep in on hand. Jack has even used it once.

Jack is 5 months and I change him about every 3 hours or whenever he feels squishy or when we are about to go somewhere or whenever he gets his bath...see, it really varies. I try to coat his tush every night before bed with any of the million zinc oxcide products I have Balmex, Butt paste, A&D etc. and if he looks a little red, I coat him during the day as well.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I think Desitin works best. I applied every diaper change even if the tush wasn't red. My ped also reccomended Lotrimin anti-fungus cream. Same stuff you would use on athletes feet. He said to mix it with the Desitin and apply to the tush. Wil and I never had thrush, so not sure what to tell ya. I know taking acidophillus (which is in yogurt) helps yeast infections.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
I have that suff and LOVE it espically on my elbos and when I had really dry patches on my face

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
works really great, eh?

I find it helps. smile.gif

Maddy'sMom replied: Well, Madison is now 10 months old, and has not had a single diaper rash....luck, or what!?? Anyways, we change her pretty often..hehe...I guess it's the first time parent thing! I don't know, we just wouldn't want to sit in it, so why should she?

We just change her when we can tell she is wet, or every couple hours....we also never leave her in a dipaer if she has poop, we change it...if we are out, when we stop, we change it in the car...etc...only time she stays in a diaper is overnight, and it's never given her a rash. We use Johnsons Pure Cornstarch powder at night to keep her skin comfy- it is the talc in powders that bother babies skin- our pedi recommended the Johnsons pure cornstarch, it has no talc, and we have used it ever since she was born.

For diaper rash, the BEST BEST thing you can EVER use is called Pink Pinxav (pronounced Pink Salve) !!!!! It is AMAZING stuff! The hospital nurse recommended it to us in the nursery. Although she has never had a rash, at the first sign of any redness or bumps, we put that on, and within hours it's gone. biggrin.gif

It contains a mix of ingredients that work together: zinc oxide, aloe, vitamin E, petroleum, and lanolin. It's like the best of all rash creams rolled into one!

Give it a try!

I am not positive where they sell it, because we got it as a baby shower gift, but I am sure they sell it at many stores and pharmacies. Babies R Us for sure.

Good Luck!

scout replied: My ds had bad diaper rash too...not even the antiobiotic creme cleared it up. We switched to alcohol-free, unscented wipes and that cleared it right up!
