How fast do you hang up?
C&K*s Mommie wrote: This may sound insensitive, but how much time do you give after saying "hello?" to hang up? In case there is a pause on the other end. This question was prompted by a call from Holley today, I had background noise (kids and the dryer) when I picked up the line. We often get calls from people saying "hello?" one or two times, after I do. That is rather annoying to say the least, and I almost immediately hang up. So when she asked "Nicole?" I barely caught it, and stayed on the line for a second longer to see what else would be said. I am glad I did though.
Also, a spinoff from Monica's post about the wrong call. If you get a wrong number call, after they ask for (first name) (last name), do you allow them to continue on talking in case they are trying to solicit something, or do you end any conversation once you realize they are trying to sell you something?
ashtonsmama replied: I usually just say (more to solicitors) "will you please excuse me"? And then hang up, after I know for sure that it's not a real person I need to talk to. And I have the same thing happen all the time, mostly at night...
luvbug00 replied: If i answer the phone and somone said "hey Tim" or "Hey Ricarda" I'm like "click" because NONE of my parents friends speak like that.
If they say is mr. or mrs. __ home?? i say "click"
If they are not understandable mostly it's "click" unless it's the domestic engenier ..( cleaning lady)
Other then that i'll wait for a responce and ask politely who it is..
mckayleesmom replied: I have caller ID....if it is unknown or a number I don't recognize, I just don't answer.....And if they don't speak to the machine....their loss.
DVFlyer replied: Ditto
Bee_Kay replied: Same here.
luvmykids replied: Me too.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Most people that I want to talk to, have both the house phone # and my cell #. Plus I am getting better at answering the phone, now. So if they cannot reach me on the house phone they can call the cell.
Otherwise, since we do not have caller-id on the house line, I cannot screen calls. And the answering machine is no longer hooked up (I unhooked the phone jacks lines, and have not rehooked them), so I cannot screen calls that way anymore.
People with a hint of an foreign accents too, are flags to me that it is someone that I possibly do not know, and thus I probably do not want to speak with either. Be it, solicitors, or people wanting payment for something. Either way I do not want to speak with them.
BAC'sMom replied: Me too.
mom21kid2dogs replied: Since my daughter was about 2.5 she's been the primary phone answerer in our house. She memorizes voices uopn one hearing (this has freaked out many a friend & aquaintance) so she generally knows who is on the other line. The few telmarketers that do stay on the line get her standard message "My mom and dad don't talk to you. Please send your information. Goodbye." It's great!!
Before O, I would hang up immediately if there was a pause. It was generally a telemarketer but occasionally I'd hang up on someone I wanted to talk to. Oops!!
3xsthefun replied: We have a caller ID, so if it is a number I do not know, or "says" unknown number I usually do not answer.
Sometimes, I do answer though when it is a local call just incase it is for DH. If they ask for someone else, I just tell them they have the wrong number.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I always say hello at least twice if not more if there is a pause. I can usually tell if it's a soliciter by the way they misprounounce my last name, so I usually give them about 5 seconds and then I say I'm not interested, take me off your list. As far as wrong numbers, I will never give them my full name, but I'm usually pretty nice because I make wrong calls sometimes too.

kimberley replied: i say hello twice then pause about 3 secs then hang up. i prolly wouldn't even do that much if my dad wasn't deaf as can be and calls unknown or private caller lol.
for solicitation calls, i immediately say i am not interested. if they ramble on, i repeat myself firmly.. they get the hint.
i can't stand automated dialers for telemarketers or bill collectors grrrrrrrr. you want to talk to me but expect me to sit on hold for an hour listening to that crap.. i don't think so! lol
Mom2BNTN replied: However, before I had the caller ID and if someone called and asked to speak to Mrs. Kristi ____________ I would just politely say "May I take a message for her" and they would usually hang up right away.
My2Beauties replied: I can vouch for her, I called the other day and she didn't pick up until I was leaving a message
I screen our calls too. If it's an unknown number or a number we don't know, we pick it up and hang up on them I know that is so mean

ilovemybaby replied: I usually say Hello a few times and then hang up. One time I got a call where no one answered and I said Hello a couple/few times and then I said something like "a-hole!" and went to hang up and a guy suddently started to talk. He said sorry I think I dialed the wrong number. OOPS! LOL I apologized but I still thought well, if he had the wrong number why didn't he just say so in the first place instead of being quiet for like five or ten seconds? KWIM?
ilovemybaby replied: We also have Caller ID. One time someone phoned and hung up so I looked at the caller ID unit and I dialed the number and politely said "someone from there just phoned me and hung up" "do you have any little kids or anything?" and the lady yelled at me over the phone that no she doesn't have any kids and no one phoned from there. Well lady, if no one phoned howcome your number is on my caller ID?! She was so rude. I had to bite my tongue.
ilovemybaby replied: I usually find out what they want and then say I'm sorry but I'm not interested.
I should try some of the other options though... like for example saying "can you hang on a minute?" and then hang up Why is it that Telemarketers always phone at night when you are eating dinner or cooking dinner? I am home all day but they always phone at night between 5 and 7pm.
Crystalina replied: If it's silence I hang up. If it's a recorder telling me to hang on when they are the ones who called I also hang up.
If it's a real telemarker (a person) I have a little fun with them (when I'm bored). One day I was making bread and I got a call, I was in the mood to mess with them so I answered and he started his big speech and I interupted him and said, "Can you tell me...what's the differance between self- rising flour and regular? And what's the differance if you add shortening, lard or butter? Then I would tell him to hold on because I had to talk to the kids for a quick second. Then I came back on and said did you figure anything out yet? I have to get this bread made by tonight. He was a stuttering fool and he said, I think I've caught you at a bad time ma'am.
ilovemybaby replied: One time I did get a recorded message that was from our phone company... just as well I didn't hang up on them because they were telling me that we hadn't paid our phone bill If I had hung up we may have ended up with a disconnected phone line. I had to phone them and find out why it hadn't gone through (the payment).
aspenblue1 replied: I do the same thing it drives Jason crazy. My caller id talks and tells me who is calling if I dont recognize it I don't even get up and try to find the phone.
MamaJAM replied: I hate being on the phone...so the shortest amount of time I can be on there is the way I go. I'll say Hello twice - about 4 seconds apart - if no one replies back - I hang up. If they really want me - they can try back. As far as wrong numbers - I cut them off as soon as I know they are calling here by accident. I don't care if they are trying to sell something - I tell them they have the wrong number and immediately hang up. I never buy anything over the phone (at least never when someone calls me) -- so it doesn't matter who they are trying to reach - if they are trying to sell something - I cut them off mid-sentence and hang up.
