How do you tip?? - Spin of of BellsMommy10
grapfruit wrote: This is a spin off of Denice's post regarding service. How do you tip waitresses/waiters?
Calimama replied: I tip no matter what, it's higher if it's good service.
A&A'smommy replied: I usually tip no matter what but I don't normally tip with the 10-15% average I just tip based upon the service. If it sucks they get a crappy tip 1 dollar maybe more, if its average then an average tip (10%) and if its great then they get higher than 10%
luvmykids replied: I tip no matter what, and if it's great service, it's a great tip. I've never had, nor could I imagine, service so bad I wouldn't tip at all. I may complain, but I'll still tip.
MoonMama replied: Same here.
Nina J replied: Tipping isn't customary in Australia, so I never tip. No one does, really.
jcc64 replied: Here in NY, 20% is pretty standard for good service, and that's what I usually pay. If it's been a less than satisfying experience, I will drop it down to 15%. I, like Monica, have never received service bad enough to justify not tipping at all. I think the wait person would have to curse me out or deliberately dump a scalding pot of coffee on my head for that to happen.
mammag replied: I tip 20% if it is good service. I only not tip if it is really poor service. Then I give a quarter. I remember reading somewhere that if you leave a quarter they know it was because of poor service where if you leave nothing they assume you're just cheap so that is what I do.
I leave the tip even if the food is bad as long as the service is good. If the food is bad/wrong I just let them know so I can get it fixed. And then base their tip on how they handle the situation.
My3LilMonkeys replied: 20% is average here too. I tip based on the service - excellent service, really high tip; average service, 20%, poor service, 10% or so. Even when it's terrible I leave a little bit of a tip so they know it was the service and I didn't just forget.
gr33n3y3z replied: the normal is 20% here for good service but we have given more at times bc the service was great
gr33n3y3z replied: I think this is a blow to the face this option bc they only get paid $2.45 an hour for what they do and the crap they put up with geeze
No tipping, they get paid for their work
hoosier momma replied: I totally agree with Monica. If you have ever been a waitress, bartender or any other kind of job that works for tips, you know how much people count on tips to make ends meet. Most servers only make about 2.50 per hour or less.
mammag replied: I see your point here but at the same time, you shouldn't take the job if you can't provide the service. If you require the money to make ends meet than you better be ready to provide good, friendly service. Maybe if less people tipped regardless of the quality of service, we would start to see an improvement in customer service. This is why I base my tip solely on their performance and not on the food. Also, I can handle them making mistakes and that doesn't affect my tip. I base it on attitude and effort more than anything. If you greet me with a smile and pleasant attitude and handle any problems with a good attitude, you are pretty much going to get a good tip.
msoulz replied: ITA exactly!
stella6979 replied: My Mom has been a waitress her entire life so I completely understand how important tips are. I always tip very well unless the service is absolutely horrible. I agree that everyone has bad days, so I try to take that into consideration, but I also believe you should leave your problems at home. I guess it just all depends on the severity of the rudeness.
luvmykids replied: Sometimes bad service isn't the servers fault...if someone didn't show up and they're covering more tables, if the kitchen is running slow, etc. I agree you have to leave your problems at home but I also try to keep in mind that there may be things that are out of their control. I figure I'm not going to dock their pay for something that isn't their fault.
stella6979 replied: True, but I also think that you should at least try and keep it together for the sake of the customers. My Mom has run into many problems at her work, but she never takes it out on the people who pay for her to put food on the table. Like I said though, it just depends on the severity of it. For the most part, I'm an excellent tipper, cause I know that's what waitresses/waiters live off of.
luvmykids replied: I agree, I just meant that bad service isn't always in the form of a bad server
stella6979 replied: Oh, I absolutely agree with ya there. I've seen some customers as well who've been rude as hell for no reason at all and the servers have kept it together. It's definitely not a job I'd want but I do appreciate the people who can do it.
TheOaf66 replied: I have a reference card that tells me how much to tip...I start at 20% then I go on a deduction system. FOr every time the server drops the ball (taking things into consideration like how busy it is etc) I take away tip money. If they are rude, slow (beyond normal) or just plain screw everything up. There has been two incidences where I have given the ultimate insult which would be the $.01 tip.
grapfruit replied: Oh I didn't pick that myself, I was just throwing that option out there in case that was somebody's feeling.
I complete tip based on service (not food quality). However if food is bad, and they just shrug their shoulders like too bad, sorry about your luck. I don't like that.
I guess what I don't like is when I go to a restaurant that is slow (like one of the only people there b/c it's an off time) and I can SEE you're not busy (b/c you're flirting w/the Host or busboy). Then THAT ticks me off. Especially when you haven't been by in 15 min to get me a refill and I'm sitting there w/my used dishes stacked around me. I don't think that wait person is getting a great tip.
My mom is a waitress too (and a darn good one at that) so I understand the value of a tip.
I guess my take on it is, from being in the "customer service industry" (which they are) their job is to be friendly, polite and helpful. I have had a bad day, not felt well, been mad, whatever, but I DON'T take that out on my customers. And yeah, sometimes THEY take it out on you. But you deal w/the public, you have to know you're going to run into some jerks, don't take it out on the next person.
stella6979 replied: I'm actually surprised that someone chose that option.
Sam & Abby's Mom replied: I always tip a minimum of 20% - more it the service is exceptional.
hoosier momma replied: I'm not saying that you don't have to earn the tip. I guess I'm just saying that I have worked my butt off to give good service to people who deem it acceptable to leave a $2 tip for a $50.00 bill. Some people have no clue how to tip or what tips really means to servers.
cameragirl21 replied: hmmm, at the end of June, we went to the Marlins game and got the skybox, inviting clients, friends etc. The food came to somewhere around 1k, I didn't eat most of it because it was mostly hot dogs, wings, fried chicken and similar things that I don't eat. I sure filled up on cookies and brownies though and I brought a lot of the meat home (that was left over) for my cat and my parents' cat and the stray that lives with my parents' cat that they promised to pick up along with their cat when they're done travelling. So it's not to say I didn't make use of the meat even if I didn't physically eat it. When it came to tipping, we left about $200, because the lady did a great job. I asked her how many skyboxes she has per night and she said 3 others besides us...so...she makes about $800 dollars a night...pretty good if you ask me. Assuming everyone leaves a good tip and all but I guess I figure when you get the skybox, you are prepared to pay. She told me some of the customers are cheap but most take care of her (these were her exact words). Other than that, I usually tip anywhere from 15-20%. I pretty much always get good service, I really don't recall the last time I didn't.
holley79 replied: If service is mediocre (sp?) or bad then I only tip 10% if they are kick butt then they get a kick butt tip. There are times when the waitstaff is just having a bad day so i try to take that into consideration.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Same here. Always 20% if good service, lunch, breakfast or dinner, less if it's bad. But I didn't know about the quarter thing. I have left nothing before, but only once. It's a hard thing to do, but this server was truly awful.
holley79 replied: I have heard the quarter thing also. It's so they know you didn't forget their tip that service was shoddy.
luvbug00 replied: I have had amazing service and tiped well and i have had horrid ( made my oma wait an hour) service and they got a sad face.
C&K*s Mommie replied: We tip high/low based on service. We usually over tip when they are fair to great, but I always feel bad when we undertip or stiff (which is very seldom to stiff or leave a penny).
my2monkeyboys replied: I didn't vote bc my answer wasn't up there. If they do really well I tip 20%, 10-15% if they're only so-so, and I've not had a server bad enough that I didn't leave at least a buck or 2. If I go out anywhere and someone has to serve me in some way, then I tip regardless of what time of day it is.
