Horrible day yesterday

PascosGirl wrote: My 5 yo decided that he really liked his vitamin gummies so he ate the whole bottle. I was in the baby's room putting him down, patting him on the back trying to get him to sleep and his big brother climbed up on our counter and got the child proof bottle from the third shelf in the kitchen. He ate all of them. I came out of the bedroom and around the corner to see him putting the last one in his mouth. I called poison control and they said to take the bottle and him to the ER stat. So I did, they ran bloodwork on him and luckily, he was fine.

The worst part was the nurse came in and asked me why he was alone for so long. I said, excuse me. He was alone for about 15 minutes at the most and the medicines are put in the cabinet, above his reach and have child proof locks on the cabinet (which he is no dummy and figured it out a long time ago). She said that I should keep a better eye on him. I wanted to deck her. I asked her if she had children and surprise, surprise, she doesn't. I told her that she needed to keep quiet when she has no idea and to just wait until she has her own. She will soon realize it is impossible to watch your child all the time when you have more than one.

I took every precaution to put meds up out of his reach, or so I thought. I have bought a lock and put the meds in the food closet on the top shelf and the doorknob now requires a key to get in. He doesn't know where the key is. So, for all of you other parents (and I know you are out there) that don't lock your meds up with a key, you might want to start.

mammag replied: That is so rude!! I'm glad you said something to her.

Don't feel too bad about it. These things do happen and we can't watch over them 24/7, like you said. When you have more than one kid you have to split the time with them.

I'm sorry you had a rough day though. grouphug.gif grouphug.gif

Jamison'smama replied: Yikes, thanks for the warning. I don't lock up the medications--at this point Jamison screams bloody murder when she has to take meds but there may come a time... I know I need to be more careful. You're right--we can't watch them ALL the time. Sorry that happened to you and glad he is okay!

JAYMESMOM replied: I am glad you said something to the nurse. Sometimes they think that parents really want to hear everything they say. Thanks for the advice about a lock for medicines since my 14 month old likes medicine.

PascosGirl replied: You are welcome. I can't believe she said that. I swear, if my child was not sitting right there, I would have really giving her my 2 cents. lol

I am a nurse and I have never talked to someone like that. I did have a talk with a mother that brought in her sick baby. The baby was sick and we couldn't figure out why. The mom left to go and smoke so I sat in the room with her baby. The baby started getting fussy, so I looked in his diaper bag for some toys. I found his bottles in there and the nipples were moldy. This is in the ER now, so she had just arrived, not enough time to mold in there. She had been feeding that child out of a moldy bottle. I had to talk to her about it. She said she couldn't get the mold out when she washed it and thought it was ok to use it again. Some people...sheesh.

amymom replied: OMG moldy bottles. The poor kid. We should need licences to have kids.

Thanks for the info about locks on medicine. I am glad your kid is fine. Shame on the nurse.

My2Beauties replied: Moldy nipples on a baby's bottle mad.gif that makes me so mad! Gosh some people just don't need to have kids mad.gif Anyways back to your story - I am so sorry that she was rude to you - what a witch! I'm glad you stood up to her, people with no children sometimes kill me how they think they know how to raise kids! dry.gif

A&A'smommy replied: UGH I can't stand stupid people don't ever TRY to give advice unless you have your own children dry.gif And OMG about the lady with the moldy nipples you can buy NEW ones lady dry.gif ANyway sorry you had a bad day and thanks for the advice I probably need to do that too!!

ediep replied: oh man! So sorry you had such a rough day! Thanks for the advice on the medicine....I am definately going to follow it!!
I am so glad your son is ok, what a scare!

MOLDY BOTTLES!!! HOW DISGUSTING!!

kit_kats_mom replied: ew! Moldy bottles. Poor kid.

Stupid nurse lady! Don't say a thing unless you've walked these shoes chicky. I'd have been boiling mad too. mad.gif

K loves taking medicine and we have it all up high and locked up. I may put the especially dangerous stuff in a locked cabinet though. That's scary.

DansMom replied: You must have been totally freaked---but you did all the right things when you reacted. Yes, it also amazes me to hear the ludicrous parenting advice that comes from people who've never parented. Like I mentioned in another post, it took 5 seconds for Daniel to get out of the house while I was making dinner two days ago. Definitely a wake-up call for us about locking our doors from the inside this summer!, but I would definitely resent someone questioning my commitment and concern for Daniel's safety based on this incident. Some people don't get the reality of maintaining a home, the many distractions and responsibilities in getting dinner on the table and laundry done, etc., and having more than one child just adds to the chaos! I'm glad you stood up to her.

jcc64 replied: When my oldest was about 3, he climbed on a chair to get to the medicine cabinet, and proceeded to drink about 3/4 of bottle of Children's liquid Advil (despite the childproof top). I totally freaked out, called my brother (who is a dr), he did the math and concluded he would be able to digest it without incident, didn't believe him- called Poison Control who told me the same thing.
Very very scary parenting moment.

iluvmysweetiepies replied: Oh how scary!!! I'm glad he's okay. Things can happen really quickly, but what can you do. My in law was quickly putting down her baby girl last summer while her 3 year old was eating some spaghetti o's and he thought they weren't warm enough so he grabbed a chair, pulled it up to the microwave, and somehow magaged to put his bowl in (with the metal fork!!) and turn it on. blink.gif She said he came running up the stair saying their were "sparkles in the microwave"!!! He could have started a fire wacko.gif LOL who know a 3 year old was capable doing all that? Things just happen. rolleyes.gif

That nurse was rude, obviously doesn't know what she's talking about. You try keeping an eye on more than one child 24/7! Eww and the moldy bottles!! dry.gif
