High School Sophomore Student Booted From School - for wearing a John Edwards T-shirt.

redchief wrote: Foxnews story

A high school sophomore in Texas was expelled from school for wearing a John Edwards for President T-shirt. The school has a policy that disallows political slogans on clothing. Now, any of you who know me would immediately know that I'm no John Edwards fan and would disagree with the student's politics in general. My concern is that the school has such a policy in the first place. How will our kids learn what free speech is, and how to use that right responsibly, if they aren't able to express themselves in American politics?

So, having an opinion on who one would like to be president, and expressing that opinion, disrupts the safe and orderly environment in the school. Am I the only one who thinks something smells bad there?

Jamison'smama replied: What do they mean by "booted" does that really mean expelled or sent home to change. Either way, it is absurd.

Anthony275 replied: how stupid. at least tell him to remove it or turn it inside out. rolleyes.gif

redchief replied:
I was not sure about what exactly "booted" means. Apparently he was suspended, not expelled. I thought expelled, but I could have read more into it. I was just flabbergasted that the school felt this shirt caused instability in the school. So, if a child decorates a book-bag or binder with a political slogan, will he/she also be undermining the peace at school?

coasterqueen replied: My first initial thought is that it's obsurd. It's not sexually explicit or anything. I think they should be allowed to wear it (even if it's a John Edwards shirt tongue.gif ). I think it's great high school kids would even think about politics and it's importance.

jcc64 replied: That's absolutely ridiculous. Then again, nothing surprises me anymore. We've lost a great deal of our own rights- kids have even less.
Fwiw, I think it's great that this kid was even engaged in the political process, regardless of whom he supports. How many high school kids even care about current events? Leave it to brain dead bureaucrats responsible for school policy to disenfranchise students before they even get out of the gate.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: How ridiculous!! dry.gif

Calimama replied: I don't know. My school had a strict dress code and whether it was a John Edwards shirt or a Nike shirt, if it had writing you couldn't wear it. I wonder if it was a shirt that wasn't in dress code but also wasn't political if they would have made him change.

redchief replied:
I know this is going to cause palpitations for many of you, because on this political and social point, Jeanne and I totally agree! thumb.gif thumb.gif thumb.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
exactly

Anthony275 replied: wanted to add: my school is strict on dress code, but sometimes they pay attention for the wrong things and ignore the bad things. a girl in my school got ISS for wearing a vintage band shirt, yet my brother went to school today wearing a singlet and didnt get a word spoken to him.

jcc64 replied:

We agree on alot more than either one of us would care to admit, I think! rolling_smile.gif

grapfruit replied:
What's a singlet? blink.gif

I also agree that schools sometimes look at the wrong thing. My freshman year of HS I got in trouble for wearing a shirt that was too long (I had short and a tank on and the shorts were long enough but the tank was a spagetti strap so I wore a flannel over it, the flannel was too long rolleyes.gif ) All I had to do was change my shirt to my t-shirt I had for gym.

The school had a STRICT policy of shorts had to be fingertip length (this has since been changed to thumb length b/c it's next to impossible to find them fingertip length). One of the guidence councilor's daughters (head cheerleader who fit the sterotype) would ALWAYS get away w/wearing teeny tiny shorts. mad.gif Totally P'd me off! tongue.gif

*sigh* the things we remember from HS...that was like 10 years ago! ohmy.gif (just realized that)

OH and to the original topic. That's crap IMO. I'm HAPPY he's paying attention to politics. How the heck do you expect to change the country to the better if you smother out any interest in workings of our country? Oh if I was the parent...

My2Beauties replied: Unless the school has uniforms (which 90% of schools in Louisville do) then that student should have been able to wear that shirt. That is absolutely ridiculous. God some of the kids in my high school wore 10x worse than that before schools had uniforms in this area. They started doing that the year after I graduated!I think this world is getting absurd! rolleyes.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
I completely and utterly AGREE!!!

This really makes me mad, no one can do or say anything anymore without getting in trouble with someone!!

Anthony275 replied:
singlet = wrestling uniform

the girls t-shirt is an old shirt... it says "clapton '74 tour" with a drawing of his face... offensive?? how is it offensive?? he played guitar for the love of god! rolleyes.gif

yeah, i know what you're talking about with the shorts...tons of people like that in my school..and think they look sexy with them on puke.gif

luvbug00 replied: That's so stuiped rolleyes.gif i never followed dress codes and I never follow them when picking out mya's wordrobe. Freedom of speech!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I had a school uniform.

We'd adhere to the dress code in that we wore the correct clothes... but we wore our ties as loose as we could get away with, and we hiked our skirts up as far as they would go. wink.gif
