Help! I'm half-blind! - contact wearers

my2monkeyboys wrote: I just got my first pair of contacts ever today. I have astigmatism in both eyes, so I have toric (sp?) contacts. Well, every time I blink they get all blurry for a second, and by the time they clear up I have to blink again. What is going on!?!?
Thanks for any help!!!

Jackie012007 replied: I'm a toric lense wearer myself - those are hard to get used to for an everyday contact lense wearer! Sounds like they might be inside out - but also I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but many pregnant women find it a lot harder to wear contacts during pregnancy - the hormone fluctuations mess with your sight and also dry out your eyes. I couldn't wear mine for my whole pregnancy!

cameragirl21 replied: i've never had that problem, although i don't wear torics but i don't know how they'd be any different.
maybe take them out and clean them with solution and then put them back in...you may be producing tears as your eye protests this new foreign body and that may be fogging them up, i can tell you that if i cry at the movies in my contacts they do fog up.
if that persists for sure call your doc, i can also ask my friend Pam, who is an optometrist, she has astigmatism too. i'm sure she'll know.
i know i'll speak to her this weekend so if you like i'll ask her for you, she'll know for sure.

gr33n3y3z replied: Jennifer had a good idea
bc I never had a problem with mine

Jackie012007 replied:
toric lenses are different, they are thicker and weighted at opposite poles of the contact so that they stay in place and conform to your misshapen eye (due to the astigmatism) - they don't float or change position like regular contacts, so they aren't as comfortable until you get used to them

my2monkeyboys replied: I'll try cleaning them, then. The lady at the drs. gave them me to put in, so they should be in right. It's mainly the right one that's doing it. I'll let you know if cleaning them helps. Wish me luck that I don't lose/tear one! biggrin.gif

PrairieMom replied: sometimes my toric lens spins. Its usually when my eyes are a little dry. When it spins I have to blink hard to get it in the right place again. Maybe thats the problem? I think one time I had problems with it it was because the lens was the wrong strength, or size or something. My dr. replaced it.

my2monkeyboys replied: I've used the drops about 4 times today, and it does seem fine for a while after that. Then it starts acting up again. Now that I just rinsed them well it feels ok again.
I have the Acuvue hydra...something kind. They're supposed to allow more oxygen and hold moisture better, but I don't know, be they seem to be drying out quite often.

my2monkeyboys replied: Well, the right one is at it again. It's actually rather uncomfortable, too, physically. I've got a small headache for some reason. Not sure if it's the contacts or just me being irritated with them, though. I'm glad I have back-up glasses coming, though it'll be tomorrow before I can get them.

Cece00 replied: Sometimes it just takes a little while to get used to contacts. I have astigmatism and I wear normal lenses, so you might switch to regular ones if you find you cant get used to torics.

TANNER'S MOM replied: Make sure you don't have a tear on one of the lenses. Mine do that if I have a tear.. and it can be small look around the edges and make sure you don't because it will hurt your eyes. And also make sure you didn't mix up the eyes. Do to the weights if you have put your lenses in the wrong eye the axis maybe different. It is blurry too.

my2monkeyboys replied: I wonder if I'd have to get a different prescription for regular ones (if I wanted to try them in the end.)
Also, how long does it take for your vision to be better with contacts? I'm just asking bc if I take them out, I can still see better than when they are in, clarity-wise.

PrairieMom replied:
I have used a Toric lense for years. Like 13 years or so. ONG I am so old. ohmy.gif Anyway, the last time I got new contacts my Dr. wanted me to try regular ones to see if my vision had improved from wearing the toric lense all that time, but it haddn't.

my2monkeyboys replied: I've read that certain types of contacts can actually improve your vision over time, but I don't think the normal soft lenses do that.
When I wear my glasses I can tell a difference in my vision between having them on and not having them on almost immediately. But with the contacts, I actually see better when I take them out. Does it just take longer for your eyes to adjust to using the contacts before you see better with them on?
Thanks!

PrairieMom replied:
I don't remember having that experience. They always worked well for me right from the start, except for the time when i had the wrong strength.

C&K*s Mommie replied: first time wearing contacts takes time to adjust to. I have a a very slight astigmatism (just this side of it) so I have not worn torics before, but I would imagine that it will take a day or two of wearing them to get used to it.

I used the Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear too, and I could tell a difference with the clarity of my vision from other contacts before. But again I did not have to wear torics at the time.

Your prescription should stay the same no matter which brand of contact you wear.
Hope your sight gets better from the cloudiness.

A&A'smommy replied: They could either be inside out, your eyes haven't gotten use to them, or they are right for your eyes.. like the right "size" or something! I hope they get better for you!! hug.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: I know the left one is sightly not right, bc they didn't have the exact right one in, so they gave me the next one until the correct trial pair comes in. But I'm not sure why the right one is blurry... maybe I'll wear them again today and see if it's any better. Maybe it could be from all the irritation of yesterday. I hope so... I don't want to have to go back and forth trying to get the right ones, ya know?
Thanks for the help!!!

gr33n3y3z replied: diffrent brands let you see diffrent ways
I'm not a big fan of J&J brands I always found they pick at my eyes and dry out faster then the other brands I tried.

My eye Dr. told me to try these new ones he had gotten in and they are called Proclear by coopervision I like those the best smile.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: I may try them, then. I think the lens do seem to dry out a lot, and I tend to have dry eyes in the spring/fall, too, so that doesn't help.

gr33n3y3z replied: I think you may like these

Maddie&EthansMom replied: The last time I had this problem, I was allergic to my solution that I was using. It took 2 optometrists before I finally got someone who knew what was going on. rolleyes.gif It was also the brand of the contacts I was wearing, as Lisa already suggested.

I hope it gets better. hug.gif I know how awful it is to have that blurriness and the headaches....ugh. wacko.gif It will drive you out of your mind.

my2monkeyboys replied: Maybe the solution is irritating my eyes, on top of the lenses not being right. Physically I've gotten used to them as far as they don't irritate my eyes (I still can't see very well, though, but that's from the prescriptions I am sure). But my eyes get this red, puffy look to them, almost like I've been crying even a while after I take them out. I may pick up a bottle of that multi-purpose stuff that's a different brand. I think ReNu is what they gave me.
