Health insurance for new baby?
PrairieMom wrote: I am trying to get private family health insurance through Bc/Bs of SD so our new baby can be covered. The represenitive that called me yesterday said that i can't get coverage for an unborn child, I just have to let them know about the birth with in 30 days. My concern is what if this child comes early and needs to be inthe ICN or comes home on an apnea monitor, or is born with some kind of a condition? Will any of that be considered "pre-existing" so they will deny us coverage? the lady I spoke to had no idea, and suggested I call customer service monday. Has anyone had experieance with this?
amymom replied: My insurance knowledge is a few years old.... but, it used to be that no matter when the baby is born, as long as you are covered, the baby will be covered AS LONG AS you notify them of name and birthdate within 30 days.
Good luck with it. Why couldn't you call customer service tomorrow? why wait until Monday?
kayla's mama replied: I have to agree. My ins knowledge is kinda dated too but, as long you are covered then baby is covered. You just have to make sure that you notify the ins co within the 30 days after birth.
PrairieMom replied: My application was still in review, and the lady said that it would be a few days until it even got into the system.
I am not the one covered it is my DH, so would that make any difference?
My3LilMonkeys replied: I agree with the others - baby should be covered.
When you say DH is the one covered - do you mean the insurance for your family is through his job or do you mean you, personally, don't have any insurance coverage? If you mean the family's insurance is through DH's job, that is how ours works and it didn't make a difference.
PrairieMom replied: He doesn't have group insurance. Its private. thats the problem. Group insurance has to cover you. Private insurance can be a little pickier. I have my own insurance through my job, but it is to expensive to get family that way, so we are getting private family insurance under DH, since they won't insure me because I have asthma. That's why I am so concerned. I am worried they will attach a rider to the baby (if there is a problem) posible leaving the baby with out insurance. can they do that?
My3LilMonkeys replied: Oooh I get it now. Sorry I can't help more but I know nothing about private insurance.
3_call_me_mama replied: My understanding is that they are covered form teh moment of birth AS LONG AS you enroll them within 30 days. SO if she had to be in NICU or something, it will be paid ofr as long as you enroll her before she is 30 dyas old. I do not think newborns bount in that preexisting condition thing cause you really couldn't enroll until they are born cause you need SS# (our ins does) and also DOB and name.
MamaJAM replied: We've had several different insurances when our kids have been born. With all the policies - our newborns were covered by whatever plan _I_ was on for the first 30 days....we just had to make sure to add them to our policy in that time.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Logan was born with a heart condition. My insurance company had to cover him. As long as he is added within 30 days, they can't call it a pre-exising condition.
PrairieMom replied: Oh, I hope you guys are right. i hate hate hate insurance. esp. Private insurance. what a racket! Im just trying to be prepared and have all my ducks in a row ahead of time. I am deffinately calling them monday. I hope they tell me the same things y-all all are saying.
holley79 replied: Well Annika was just born in Dec and this is all that we had to do.
coasterqueen replied: i agree the baby should be covered no matter what as long as you enroll w/in 30 days after birth. I know with our insurance my husband had to call when they realized I was in labor. He told them I was delivering 4 weeks early and wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else we needed to do because there was a NICU team in the room when we delivered. They were fine with it.
