lovemy2 wrote: Switched their baby to whole milk before 1 year? What do you think? Dylan is really not interested in his formula much anymore - he maybe gets 15 ozs a day - which I know is not nothing but - part of it is he is just too on the move - but he is eating tons of table food and still alot of baby food - he is hardly starving - he is 19 lbs at 9 1/2 months old -

I am contemplating starting to put milk in his bottle with the formula - partly too we are going to Disney at the end of October and I would so like to not take formula with us - but I don't want to do anything that would skimp on nutrients for him - what do you all think???

luvmykids replied: I'd run it by your ped....we did start eggs and dairy around 9 mos against popular opinion but I would double check on the switch to milk. If he's eating a lot of table foods though I'd think he's getting the bulk of the nutrients from that, could you try water or watered down juice in his bottle and see how that affects him?

Bamamom replied: I would definitly run it by your ped. The current thought is that the earlier you intro milk the more likely your child will develop an allergy to it. Or at least that my understanding. I think 9 months is a little young - but then my degree is in sociology, not medicine! rolling_smile.gif

As for Disney - I would think taking formula would be easier if you get the powdered kind - it won't spoil like milk will. Just a thought.

CantWait replied: Robbie was started on Whole milk at 10 months. It was a money issue for us at the time, and the doctor was on board with it.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I personally would wait. He sounds like such a healthy kid, so I wouldn't worry that he isn't taking much formula at this point. If he is eating table foods just fine, he is getting all the essential nutrients/vitamins he needs. They really don't need as much as we think. I know my ped said you can add a dab of strawberry Quick to the formula if that will help him take it...She suggested this to me because Wesley isn't taking much whole milk. I haven't tried it because it seems a bit too artificial for my taste, but if you are concerned that his fluid intake is low, then I would give it a shot. Formula actually seems easier to take to Disney IMO. Powder doesn't have to be refrigerated. Neither does plain water.

lovemy2 replied: Thanks guys - I guess I didn't really think about the milk in the heat thing at Disney - DUH...

I guess I will wait - he does drink juice and stuff too - so I am not really worried about his fluid intake more that he doesn't seem interested in the formula anyway so maybe try to switch - I never did it with Olivia till a year old and she had a hard time making the switch from soy to milk (Dylan is on soy too - but neither were on it for allergy to milk reasons - more for their fussiness as newborns)

This place is great - great place to bounce things around smile.gif

coasterqueen replied: IMO, whether a baby is on breastmilk or formula they should be on that for at least the 1st year of life. They will not get the nutrients, etc they need from milk and it's very important for growth and development that they get the nutrients they would get from bm or formula. So I'd wait. It's not that long of a wait. I'd talk to your ped, too.

moped replied: Personally I would wait til 1 year, just my opinion. But whos, your doc might say go ahead!

lovemy2 replied:
I don't think he will say yes (Ped) - I would ask him before I did it - but at his 9 month checkup - he said formula until 1 year old - so I will wait - not that big of a deal....Olivia loved her formula - Dylan - he loves his bottles not sure he cares about what is in it though.....he will suck down one bottle a day - the rest he can take em or leave em....but either way - we will stick to the formula until 1 year:)

Boo&BugsMom replied:
We did with Tanner. I think at 10-10 1/2 months when he was eating all table food. By that time he was getting enough nutrition from other things that he didn't need the formula anymore. He also didn't last long on whole milk because it made him extremely constipated, so he went to 2% at about 18 months. I never consulted his ped either, I was his mother and just used my common sense and personal judgement. Actually, when it comes to eating...with both the boys, I never consult him, even though I love their doc. I know my kids, have common sense, and I studied child nutrition in college so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. Every kid is different.

HuskerMom replied: We've been giving Keith 2% for a couple weeks. He drinks it real well, and will turn 1 in a week so it wasn't too early I don't think. 9 months does seem a little early to me but I agree with everyone else about asking the dr.

My3LilMonkeys replied: We switched Madison at around 10 months. She was hardly taking bottles at that point - she ate "real" food almost exclusively. We did consult her ped and she agreed with the decision.
