My darling little girl,

One year ago today, I received the best gift in the world. After 12 hours of labor, you were given to your daddy and I at 4:27pm on a hot, humid Labor Day Monday. Watching you grow and develop during this previous year has truly been miraculous. The impact that you have had on my life is immeasurable and profound. The word “love” seems too small and powerless to encompass all that I feel for you.

This birthday is bittersweet for me. The last year has passed so quickly accompanied by the flurry of your development and my adjustments to motherhood. We have both done a bang up job as far as I am concerned. Rocking and nursing you the first week that you were with us, I remember crying because I never wanted you to grow up. You were so tiny, gentle and magical to me. Then the anticipation for a first smile, first hugs, and first step all came to me. I was able to enjoy all of the little moments and focus on you, and what you were doing at those times though and I’m so happy that I did.

I would never give up the closeness that nursing has, and still does, bring to us. I love your warm little body crunched up tightly against mine when you sleep with us and waking up to your sweet little face each morning has made me a very happy mommy indeed. I even, secretly, love the sleepless nights we spent together, rocking and nursing all by ourselves while the world slept all around us. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Your personality has begun to bloom as well and I get to unveil a new aspect of it everyday. The serious little girl who is examining carpet fuzz with a furrowed brow can change instantly into a broad grinned imp when she eats said fuzz. You are very focused and curious and you simply must examine everything that resides in your world. I have spent many days watching you and marveling in your discoveries with you. The sounds of different leaves crunching under your tiny feet, feeling the big Florida raindrops on your head and seeing a bird are all some of the things you discovered this year that I had the opportunity to see for the first time too.

The previous year was so full of firsts. Your first smile lit up my heart and your first steps were big and bold. Those feet are going to take you to see such extraordinary things. The first time you walked to me for a hug made me feel so special and I realized then, what unconditional love really is. Your first words, teeth, shoes…the list goes on and on.

I am so proud of everything that you have accomplished thus far, anxious for the upcoming changes and a little bit sad that this part of you life has seemed to pass so quickly. You will be learning and exploring so many new things this coming year. Talking, running and hopefully eating a little bit better are high up on your to-do list. So here I bid adieu, with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye, to your infancy. I do have so many wonderful memories.

That is so sweet. I have been so emotional these past few days, weeks knowing that my little one will be 1 here in a few days and I cry every day we get closer.
