Ham, bacon, porkchops

Now I'm not trying to make fun of anyone...this is not my intention at all, but something has happened to DH and I twice now that just boggles my mind!! Both of us do not eat PORK. DH for religious reasons. I don't eat it because I can't make it for DH. Anyhow, we went to dinner at a coworkers house a couple months back and they had asked DH what he doesn't eat. Well he said pork of course. When we got there, they said they made chicken stuffed with ham and the husband said "you don't eat pork, but you eat ham right?" huh.gif

And then yesterday, I went to a brunch buffet for a friend's baby shower. I'm chatting with one of the women in the group (that I do not know) and I mention that I wish the buffet had more meat items to choose from, because I do not eat pork and everything was either sausage, bacon or pork loin. Well she goes on to say "well why don't you have an omelet with ham in it??"

I'm just stumped! I come home and tell DH the story and he says to Wil "So if a pig says oink oink, what sound does a HAM make??" bigthink.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Well, pork and ham aren't quite the same thing (different parts of the animal) but they are all pig which is of course the important part.

Honestly, if you said to me that you didn't eat pork without specifying why I wouldn't think twice about making ham - maybe you just don't like pork or are allergic to it. But if you said it was for religious reasons I would know not to.

MyLuvBugs replied: I'm with you Rae. Pork and Ham all come from the same animal (PIG!), so if you say you don't eat PORK then all pig and pig bi-products are out of the question to me. Kinda seems like a no brainer, but that's just me. rolleyes.gif

LOL. Maybe from now on you and your DH should say "We don't eat pigs." lol rolling_smile.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: well yes they all come from the same animal, but I see the problem. If you say pork it might not occurr to most no ham or bacon. I would change that to we dont eat pig, then there should be no qustion.

MyLuvBugs replied: Ok. It was bugging me so much, I had to go and look it up on Wikipedia. These are the definitions that they had for Pork and Ham. smile.gif

Pork = "Pork is the meat taken from pigs. "

Ham = "Technically, ham is the thigh and buttock of any animal that is slaughtered for meat, but the term is usually restricted to a cut of pork, the haunch of a pig or boar."

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
You're so cute Erika! I know that they come from different parts of the animal and that ham is a bunch of parts of the pig pressed together, but technically it's the same animal. Like if I said I didn't eat beef, I would hope most people knew that meant I won't eat prime rib.

Bacon can be made from turkey of course, which we eat often, same with sausage, but when you're out somewhere, you will usually find the pork kind.

mckayleesmom replied: I always thought it all came from a pig and pig to me ='s pork.

ediep replied: If you told me that you don't eat pork, I would assume that you don't eat any part of a PIG!! I don't eat any red meat, so I say that I don't eat MAMMALS to avoid any confusion

MyLuvBugs replied:
Oh I totally agree with you. And just like Brianne said in her post Pork to me ='s ANYTHING coming from a piggie. smile.gif It was just bugging me. lol laugh.gif

luvbug00 replied: ITA pork or ham = PIG!!

holley79 replied: I know that we have "ham" steaks that are deer and cow. If you told me you didn't eat pork I would not make pig but I would still make ham. It just wouldn't be pig ham. KWIM? I don't think I made sense. LOL

Cece00 replied: I guess that some ppl just dont think about ham being from a pig??? Dunno.

I'd start saying I was allergic to pork products, ppl might be more careful.
