Hailey's Weight

The doctor not too long ago said my daughter was a bit underweight, which I believe myself after comparing her to my friends kids. I was advised to put her on Pediasure which I did, but it seem like she is seriously picky with her food, she don't wanna sit still in her booster seat and she is always throwing food around other than in her mouth. I read that I should feed her six times a day being that she is already one, but do anyone else have any ideas on what I can do to help her pick up some weight?
C&K*s Mommie replied: Just how much does she weigh?? Our youngest has always been underwieght and under the average height for her age group. She can outeat her older sister, on any day! Our oldest has always been the oppisite, always above the average. Anyhow, with both of them because the height and weight cancelled each other out, the docs were never concerned.
For you, I would not be either. She will grow into a healthy child, as long as she is eating something each day, and not junkfood. She will be alright. Was she a preemie baby?? Anyhow, I would not be terribly concerned over her weight right now, as long as she is consuming healthy things, her body will probably even itself out. If you are still concerned ask for a second opinion, those can usually put your mind at ease.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: If she likes yogurt and fruit, try making smoothies and add something like Carnation Instant Breakfast. A healthy treat that has a lot of calories.
Kaitlin'smom replied: I was going to ask her age and weight. Was she premie? what were her birth stats. Is she meeting milestones okay? lost of qestions I know but soemtimes weight is just emphisaze to much and we all worry about it.
bigheadcutie replied: Thanks for the suggestions, she's not a premie or anything when I took her to the doctor when she was about 10-11 months she was like 17 pounds. I just thought it was because at one time looooooong ago I was smaller and her father isn't far from a toothpick. But Imma try to up her calories a bit and make sure everything is healthy.. Thanks guys
bigheadcutie replied: Shes one now, she goes to the doctor next month for a weigh in but previously I think she was like 10 or 11 months and she was about 16-17 pounds which concerned me. At birth she was 7 lbs 8 oz. She has been walking for a while now, all her milestones for a 1 year old have been reached.
C&K*s Mommie replied: That is almost identical to Kellie, she was 16 point something pounds at 10mos or so. Now at 21mos, she does not weigh much more than that, I am sure. She was 7.4 lbs at birth, she was born on her final due date. But my mother always says that I was a petite baby, and to look at me now~~ I would think that she was fibbing!
She will be fine, no worries. Don't let the doc get you too worked up over her~~ she is barely a toddler! Like I said, get a second opinion, if it would put you at ease. Other than that, I would not worry beyond it.
BTW... she is a cutie!!
luvmykids replied: Does she snack between meals? Maybe that may be why she doesn't want to sit in her chair and eat? I have a niece who is incredibly picky so when they find something she does like they give it to her all the time or she just won't eat. Sorry I can't be of more help, but ITA ... if she's developmentally on track the weight is less of a concern. Hang in there!
fashionmumofboys replied: I would say give her cheese sticks, yogurt, high calorie snacks in between her meals to bump up her calories.
Good luck with her weight check on her next appt.
bigheadcutie replied: I took her off the gerber graduates unless its like the lil finger food pasta things because all the other she wont touch, she's on table food now. I just got her to eat some chicken and string beans now b/c she woke up from her nap.
MomTo4 replied: All of my children are quite slender and were also only 16-17 pounds at the age of 10 or 11 months, probably because of the fact that DH and I are thin. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, and ITA with everyone else...you should feed her healthy, high-calorie snacks throughout the day.
CantWait replied: From your pictures, she looks extremely healthy to me, therefore I wouldn't worry about it to much. What I would worry about is if she is reaching all her milestones....can she crawl, is she sitting up on her own, can she grasp things and put it to her mouth, is she starting to say words, does she walk (if she does walk, she's well ahead). Is her length increasing by a lot also. If she's growing at an inch - two inches each visit, this might be the reason why she isn't gaining weight. Between her length and weight, it might just be evening out.
Both my boys have always been under in the weight charts, but they are completely healthy. Most doctors put way to much emphasis on how much child weighs. My 10 year old is very tall, and very skinny ( I say that he's going to excel in basketball and track), my 2 year and a half year old has yet to reach 30 lbs). Both are very healthy and physically, mentally, and intellectually are growing at enourmous proportions.
