I am breastfeeding and i am going to my sister baby shower tomorrow. My boyfriends cousin gave us her breast pump. Its a Medela and cost her over $300. We got all new parts for it and I just wonder if theres anything i need to know about using a pump. Im afraid that if i do it wrong i will end up sore, or cracked or something. I have the nipple cream that i use after every feeding, should i still do that after pumping? I just dont wanna mess anything up!!! Thanks!
amymom replied: I am not an expert by any means, and it has been a long time, but I am not sure how many responses you will get tonight.
Just give it a try tonight, right before feeding, for a short practice. That way you won't feel so uncomfortable tomorrow. I think you should use the cream just like you would with normal feedings. It is a bit tricky to get used to, but you will.
Good Luck to you.

boyohboyohboy replied: I just wanted to add, the using a used breast pump is not a good idea, even though you got all new parts, unless you have a hosp grade pump those are the only pumps that do not get milk or milk products into the pump itself, you are risking infection and spreading germs to the new baby by using a used pump.
Can the baby go to the shower with you so you can breast feed? I am sure being so young yet he will sleep most of the time for you.
kimberley replied: congratulations on Caden!!
sorry i don't have advice... i used a manual pump so i could control the pressure. hope it goes well.
skinkybaby replied: Actually, as long as its a closed system breast pump it's okay to borrow one from a friend as long as you're using new tubing, shields, etc. A lot of pump manufacturers offer these now in an effort to be "greener".
boyohboyohboy replied: actually that is not true, the only closed safe system are the hospital grade pumps...

from the FDA web site
Should I Buy a Used Breast Pump or Share a Breast Pump?
You should never buy a used breast pump or share a breast pump.
Only FDA cleared, hospital-grade pumps should be used by more than one person. With the exception of hospital-grade pumps, the FDA considers breast pumps single-use devices. That means that a breast pump should only be used by one woman because there is no way to guarantee the pump can be cleaned and disinfected between uses by different women.
The money you may save by buying a used pump is not worth the health risks to you or your baby. Breast pumps that are reused by different mothers can carry infectious diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis.
Buying a used breast pump or sharing a breast pump may be a violation of the manufacturer’s warranty and you may not be able to get help from the manufacturer if you have a problem with the pump.
