Had Logan evaluated

MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: We do these questionnaires every few months from the county that help show any areas where your child might have a delay or problem. So Logan's 16 month form showed that he might possibly have a speech delay. They hold these clinics every few weeks where you can get your child evaluated for fine and gross motor skills, emotional development, dental, vision hearing screens, speech and general health. Logan and I went to one today. They said that his fine and gross motor skills are slightly above average for his age and his speech is right on target, but his hearing test was another story. They could NOT get a reading. Now I know Logan hears things. So they had a nurse look in his ears and sure enough, LOTS of fluid behind both eardrums. And the right one looks red. GRRRR!! We went through at least 7 ear infections in Logan's first year and he's had 2 more since turning 1. Can't this kiddo catch a break.
So long story short, we have to go see his pediatrician tomorrow morning if I can get him in. My poor little monkey. He has been rubbing his ears, but hasn't been acting like they hurt him. No fever, but he usually doesn't have one when he gets an ear infection. I feel like a "Bat Ma" for not noticing this sooner. bawling.gif

CAMSMOM1 replied: I feel your pain. Cameron has had so many ear infections, I have lost count. sad.gif Sometimes I wonder too, if he has one and I don't know. (not running a fever.) But lately he's been really irritable and grumpy. And he has been running a low grade temp, so I'm not sure. dunno.gif Sorry to talk about me, it's just so hard having to deal with these nasty ear infections. Don't feel like a bad Mommy, you didn't know, no symptoms. But it's good they caught this early on.

My sister's youngest had the same test done. And they found the same thing, lots of fluid behind his ears and had a ear infection for weeks they suspected. (she didn't know, I guess they get used to feeling like that.) They put tubes in his ears, and his speech just started to burst from the seams after that. Huge leaps & bounds. They said he could only hear 40 % in one ear, and 25% in the other. So the tubes were a huge blessing.

They said they won't do those tests on Cam until his 2 year check-up, which is next month.

I hope they can get these ear infections under control. Did you read that post on here about ear infection immunizations? I thought that was interesting.

I hope Logan feels better soon, and they can find a solution to this problem. But it's good to hear that he is doing well in the other areas, like gross motor skills. thumb.gif

Keep us posted! grouphug.gif

NEWMOM05 replied: Don't blame yourself. Sometimes these things sneak up on us. I sure hope Logan feels better.

C&K*s Mommie replied: I hope they can get Logan taken care of this time, not to say that a poor job was done before, though. I just hope this is the final time. hug.gif

You are a great mother-- don't be so hard on yourself. hug.gif hug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Kelly it's okay hug.gif You're not a bad mom. wink.gif Sometimes they don't run fever with ear infections. Maddie didn't always and it was hard to tell when she had one b/c she didn't always act sick, either. My brothers were the same way..my mother never knew one of them had infections until he was evaluated (like Logan) and they discovered he couldn't hear.

I hope Logan feels better soon and gets rid of those ear infections. hug.gif Have you considered tubes?

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Kelly~ WONDERFUL news about his skills! smile.gif Sorry about the ear infections! I hope they clear up quickly and he does not have to go through anymore! hug.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: I hope his ear infections clear up quickly. hug.gif If not, just wanted to mention that his tonsils might be the underlying problem. I had chronic ear infections for years until my tonsils were taken out and not a one after that.

Congrats on his skills - I wish our county did something like that!

~Roo'sMama~ replied: hug.gif Sorry about the ear infection. Poor kiddo. sad.gif hug.gif I'm glad the rest of the evaluation went so well though! thumb.gif smile.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: Poor baby. sad.gif I was worried you were going to say he was deaf or something awful. I'm actually glad that it is only an ear infect and not something really horrible. I hope he feels better soon. hug.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Thanks everyone. I took him into the ped this morning, he said that Logan's ears do have some fluid, but are not infected. So we need to bring him in agan in a month to have them looked at. If fluid is still present, then we may evaluate for tubes. The month thing is only if he doesn't develop an infection before then which is possible with his cold and the fluid already there. Here's hoping it clears up.

MamaJAM replied: Great news that everything with the tests went well. thumb.gif

Poor kiddo about the EI - hope it clears up soon and they can stay away for a while. hug.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: Poor Logan. sad.gif He cannot get a break. hug.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I'm sorry you're going through this Kelly, but he will be okay. I'm hoping they don't have to put tubes in. I'll be thinking about you both! Wil hasn't had an EF yet, knock on wood, but he just had his 18 mon well-child checkup yesterday and my ped wants us to bring him back if he's not saying more words by 21 months. His ears were clear, but she expects more words within the next few months, or she recommends he goes to a speech therapist. sad.gif So although I understand it's not fun to hear your kiddo may have a delay, just know speech delays can happen regardless of infection or not. You're not a bad mom at all! hug.gif

jacobsmama replied: hug.gif I hate ear infections or sore ears. hug.gif
