Got WIC yesterday... - One lady made me mad!

So far, it seemed all the ladies there were really nice and supportive of BFing. But yesterday when I was there, I told them I was expecting again. Well, one lady there said IHAD to wean Hannah right away !! She said to plan a weekend trip to a friend's house, and let DH handle her for the weekend !! Have you ever heard anything SO stupid?!? She said I was at risk for being malnourished! I don't think I have that problem! I'm NOT going to do THAT! It's more than nourishment to Hannah; it's comfort, love, etc.
Then she kinda hinted that I'm on the fat side, as well. She said I should give skim milk a try; it has fewer calories and fat. UGH! Some people!!
amynicole21 replied: Ew!! What is wrong with her?? People are so misinformed about bfeeding. It really is a shame. Had you had less knowledge about the subject, she might have convinced you to switch Hannah to formula, which I am sure happens to lots of Moms on the program. Sad...
supermom replied: They are a federally funded agency - I think I would be making a report to someone about that women's behavior, for sure.........That is totally and completely ridiculous, and totally uncalled for!!
You want me to call them for ya???? I'd print those articles and bring them with you next time, at a minimum. Maybe you can educate some obviously un-educated health "officials"
ediep replied: Very Rude!!!
Kaitlin'smom replied: how rude! BF has come a long way. My mom had to stop when she was PG with me (thats what the docs told her back then), so my sister did not get to as long! Good thing she did not get PG again I would never take a bottle!
so no you dont have to stop as supermom has proven! you juts need to keep your nutrients up for all of you.
and hinting you are over weight is sooo rude I had a Medical student once tell me that, gee like I did not know at the time I needed to drop a few pounds but dont tell me that when your twice my size! Boy I told her off! I would never tall anyone there were over weight, i would only be there to support them losing weight that they wanted to!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: How absolutely RUDE.
My DH's family (most of them) are formula pushers too. A few of them got together, and bought a case of 12 cans of formula as a baby gift, when I was 6 months pg. Can you believe?
I kept it though, instead of returning them, because my step-sister had a baby 2 1/2 months before me, and didn't breastfeed (she tried for about 3 days - didn't relaly give it a shot, AND she wanted to be able to drink again.......*sigh*) so I gave her half, and kept the other half for myslef *just in case*. I kept them until October, which was when I started supplementing Zach, and so they did go to use...
coasterqueen replied: OMG Molly!!!! I can't believe they said those things to you!!! How dare them!!! Breastmilk is great nutrition for your babies. The best, actually! And to tell you you are a little on the fat side! If there was an icon with 1 finger, I would put it out here for them
I thought WIC was VERY supportive of breastfeeding! I have even heard they will give pumps for mothers who bf and work. Hmmph, sounds like you got a WIC office w/at least 1 bad apple in it!
Well, I think you are great for what you are doing for your child! Giving your baby mommy's milk is precious!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: You'd think they WOULD be supportive of it.....it's FREE FOOD for your baby! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!
Kaitlin'smom replied:
sorry that cracked me up!!!
MommyToAshley replied: GRRR!
Glad you were well-informed and able to make the right decisions for YOUR family!
Mommieto2Girls replied: What's wrong with that women.
That's when you must close your ears and sing a happy tune.
MomToMany replied: When she suggested the weekend thing, I laughed at her! I didn't think she was actually SERIOUS about it ! And I don't think that would've been enough to get Hannah to quit anyway; as soon as I'd come home, she'd be patting our chair wanting to nurse. She's 15 months old, and I don't think she'd forget THAT easily!!
I'm SO glad I know what's right and what's wrong. I mean, if there WAS a problem with BFing while PG (which there isn't), my Dr. surely would've said something to me about it. My Dr. was actually HAPPY that I was still nursing Hannah; he said it lowers the risk of certain cancers.
Thank you for the support, ladies! You guys are awesome!
mckayleesmom replied: I would say, " oh I didn't know that I hired you as my doctor", Then I would tell her that maybe she should review the wic breastfeeding support policy and realize shes telling people things that you don't think wic would really approve of. Then I would ask her to please give me what I came for by doing her job and keeping her opinions to herself. Then on my way out I would tell her that I feel sorry for her kids cause any mom that weans her child is one thing, but doing it by just leaving for a week shouldn't have had kids in the first place. Who is this lady anyways,,,The evil Mary Poppins?
CantWait replied: HOW RUDE!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like they're really misinformed, very ignorant on the subject.....and to tell you to drop a few lbs.....doesn't get more ignorant then that.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG I woud have slapped her! I have heard of a lot of women that are still breastfeeding well into the third trimester! I wouldn't give up! It's good for her, you and the baby (just guessing but this way you don't have to wait for your milk too come in)!
supermom replied: Actually, supposedly, it changes back to colostrum somewhere in the third trimester, so you do get your milk "back in". This is one reason some kids give it up voluntarily when mommy gets PG. I just don't know how much I'll be engorged, but if you want, I'll let you know - LOL!!
catou_98 replied: GEEEZZ lady, back off! some people are just so darn rude! Good for you for stiking up to her and continue breastfeeding! she doesn't know what she's talking about obviously!
MomToJade&Jordan replied: That lady was very rude to you.
When I belonged to WIC here in Hawaii they were very informed about bfing and encouraged it. I can't believe that the woman could say stuff like that.
MamaMartie replied: [QUOTE] What in idiot. How could she say such terrible things to you? There is absolutely nothing wrong with BFing while pg. I have lots of friends who did it. In fact I have one friend who tandum fed her 2 year old, and her 1 year old while pg. She didn't have trouble with malnurishment, preterm labor, etc. In fact I think she delivered 10 days late. I cannot belive that people working in a gov't agency that specializes in the nutritional needs of pg women and children could be so ignorant.
I am sorry you had such a bad experience. Congratulations on your pregancy though. I am so happy for you!
MomToMany replied: Thank you, MamaMartie! I'm starting to get excited about it!
Thanks to the rest of you, too. I didn't think I'd get so many supportive responses! I'm not good with comebacks, but I'm sure I'll hear more when I go in in November to get the kids recertified! I'll be sure to let everyone know how THAT goes!
