Genius or memorized? - My 5 year old

msoulz wrote: This morning Erin and I were talking about the number of days in a week, weeks in the year, etc. She asked "what is a month" and I told her about 30 days. She then said there are 60 days in 2 months! So I asked how many were in 3 months and she said she didn't know. So I am left wondering, did she add 30 + 30 or was it already somewhere in her brain? She can add simple numbers ( the under 5 numbers ) but I was a bit surprised.

I found it amusing, not really genius-like (not that I would know what that is!! tongue.gif) but thought it might make for interesting conversation.

What brilliant things have your young ones done that surprised you?

MommyToAshley replied: My vote is genius!! Whether memorized or if she added it, I think it's great that a five year old knew that.

I think kids know and understand a lot more than we ever give them credit for.... they will continue to amaze us in so many ways.

mckayleesmom replied: I think she is right where she should be math wise.

boyohboyohboy replied: I think she is one smart cookie!

mom21kid2dogs replied: I say genius all the way!! thumb.gif

cameragirl21 replied: I'm gonna say a combo but mostly genius because I see it like this--if she can add numbers under 5, then it makes sense that she may have figured out that 30 plus 30 equals 60, just as 3 plus 3 equals 6, but could not figure out 3 plus 3 plus 3, because that is too far above 5.
So genius enough to figure out that a. 3 and 3 correlate to 30 and 30 and b. that 30 is just 3 followed by a 0.

msoulz replied: LOL, thanks all. I do not believe the genius thing, but it is really nice to see whatever is going on, be it memorization or like Jennifer said, just figuring it out from something she already knows, I am just glad she is progressing and learning and putting things together. That makes me happy, and occasionally amazes me and makes me put up silly polls on PC!!! rolling_smile.gif

my2monkeyboys replied: Isn't it great to witness your child just bust out knowledge?? LOL
That's one reason why I love homeschooling - I get to witness those moments quite frequently. smile.gif
And I voted 'genius'... how could it not be?!? wink.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: Their little brains are such sponges, it continually amazes me. Just tonight Thomas (5 also, almost 6) asked me how many days January has, then how many February has. After I told him the answers I asked him, "how many more days are there in January than February" just trying to see if he could subtract odd numbers (I expect him to be able to know that 10-5=5) and he said, 3! I was pretty impressed. They know more than we think they do!

msoulz replied:
So true!!! thumb.gif

coasterqueen replied: I say genius! thumb.gif happy.gif

PrairieMom replied: I voted for " why are you wasting my time" just because it was a funny answer. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Kelly replied: That is very cute. I think he is very smart. Kids surprise you all the time. Kayla can count to I think10 but not sure.
